There is a special needs employee at my local deli who handles seafood. His name is Buddy. He is an awesome person. Simply awesome. I call in orders all the time. I order salmon and always take his suggestion for the day regarding seasoning. He is always saying things like "this is heaven" "you'll absolutely love this" or when you're done ordering, the way he says "ah, that's gonna be sweet, anything else?" makes me think my boring repetitive order is actually pretty sweet and he would do anything else for me if I asked. He never recognizes me on the phone but he always recognizes me when I go to pick up my food. He's probably the best person I've met in the last 5 years. A tear comes to my eye just appreciating that guy.

    Quite an interesting day today.

I was in the backyard pulling weeds, collecting strewn about landscaping stones, and organizing an also strewn about selection of firewood into a proper pile when I unearthed a healthy network of poison ivy vines. I went next door to ask if they minded if I cleaned up their side as well to prevent them coming back to my side through the privacy fence.

    Holy vines, Batman!

Two hours and three 42 gallon contractor bags later, I had ripped up, clipped as many as I could, and raked up leaves that were covering more landscaping stones as well as more firewood. (I came to the conclusion that this was all a poorly executed idea to keep a digging dog confined to their yard by the previous owner.)

Here’s the interesting part, the woman I spoke with is from Nepal, her mother is visiting her from Nepal, and her daughter was born here. The daughter is non-verbal autistic who’s able to attend a nearby school, but suffers from seizures. She was enjoying the swing and trampoline as I worked and her mother and I struggled to communicate. Google translate worked for me to her, but the iPhone couldn’t decipher her accent with any reliability. We did have a few laughs though.

Here’s the best part. She offered me food. I would usually say no and stay to myself, but enjoying trying to communicate really made me appreciate the offer of food, a yummy language, as I was meeting my next door neighbor. As I was now cleaning a significant portion of their backyard, and had only drank a Red Bull earlier, the tea and bread offer was awesome. Since it’s hot out, I thought iced tea. Um, no. It was the richest most complex hot tea / coffee hybrid tasting thing I’ve ever tried, and I hate coffee. The bread was sweet and buttered, the two went together great.

A little later, I wanted more water and needed to get a new bag. I stayed inside for a while playing with my dog before going back out. She and her mother were out there with a bag and take like they were going to keep going. I laughed, showed them my bag and told them no. They laughed and left their rake out as they went back inside. I finished raking, pulling assorted weeds, and bagging whatever debris I could.

    Fucking awesome.

But we’re not done. Now that the detour on the other side of the fence is over, I go back to working on my own yard. An hour or so goes by and I hear them chatting in the back. It goes quiet and I keep working. A little later I hear a knocking that I think is them working again, then my dog starts barking a little bit. And look back and it’s her looking over the fence inviting me over.

I get over there and there is no one outside, but I see they have cut a lot of overgrowth off of their tree. I instinctively think I need to get another bag and help these two finish the job. As I go to walk back over, I hear “No no no!” and look up. Mom and grandma are walking out with plates.

    They made me more food!

They brought me out 10 delicious! chicken dumplings with a spicy sauce accompanied by a bean dish with a different spice with onions and peas in it. It was so good!

Pretty sure they tried telling me not to bag up the stuff they cut, but I did anyway, to much gratitude. My roll off will be here tomorrow and there will be plenty of space for their four bags.

    Great day. Great neighbors!

I think fans are the some of the lamest humans alive. Fans. What is a fan? Someone who has no skill themselves so must pretend they have something in their lives by being a fan of someone else more talented and interesting than them.

Football fans are obviously the worst example. People that get upset and angry that a bunch of men that they've never met, lose at a game that kids play in the school playground.

There's a guy in the office who is a die hard rock and roll fan. I'm all for enjoying music but this guy thinks he's an authority on music simply because he's listened to lots of it and knows all about the musicians, the years that songs came out etc. It's fucking hilarious, All of that is nothing. He can't play an instrument or sing a single note in tune, haha. He has nothing but convinces himself he is some kind of rock authority.

I have called my computer ‘my machine’ for years. Laptop, desktop, doesn’t matter. My machine.

    A. Where did I pick this up?
    2. Does anyone else do this?

we’ve been back in nz for a couple months now and settling in to the new house, kids in school, wife catching up with people after 15 years away. I really thought i’d miss the studio, etc. but finding that it was actually exhausting and am enjoying the freedom that comes with less. i’ve not gotten back into painting again either and think it might be a while yet. our local beach is a nude beach, so there are plenty of volunteers to model and i’ve taken a sketchbook a few times but mostly its nice to just take a beer and a book and chat with jess. overall, feeling more calm.

yesterday beach trip to Te Aira Point, rock jumping and the kids caught an octopus:

I went to the pretty big store and was buying groceries and some other stuff and I lost my phone somewhere in the store and I couldn't find it, so I politely asked some people passing by if they could dial my cell so I can hear it ringing. Not a single person would help. I am like wtf.

And I'm agitated for people being assholes and keep looking for my phone carrying all the shit I bought, pissed off, and suddenly this lady with heavy african accent with her husband and 2 kids approaches me and asks me "Is there something I can help you with?". Modest and nice couple, clearly religious as well.

And I tell her that I really appreciate it and that I can't find a phone and left it somewhere and I just need someone to dial it so I can find where it is. She says she saw how people reacted and can't understand why people wouldn't help and that it happened to her and kindly accepts and dials my number.

I find the phone and we chat for a minute, I tell her thanks for everything.

I went outside to my car, and since I was buying thanksgiving/holiday presents for some of my friends I couldn't help thinking how kind this lady was and saw me struggling and approached to help.

So I took the Ember smart warming mug I bought for someone and I thought she would like it I decided to give her a thanksgiving present as a thanks if they come out while I was still there.

As I was putting my stuff in the trunk, it turns out they were parked 2 cars away from me in the parking lot and were just coming out as well. So I took the nicely packaged ember mug and approached them and said thanks again and that I would love to give them a small token of thanks for helping me and gave her the present.

She was so surprised and her husband and kids were smiling and so happy and we chatted for a bit, I told them happy holidays and happy thanksgiving and we parted ways.

We all went home smiling, waving to each other and in the spirit of thanksgiving. :)

Okay, I rarely post anything personal on here anymore. Probably my own fault for being such a bell-end in the past. But hey ho, I'm not one to dwell on the past.

Anyway, I set myself a new challenge this year. Something I have had inside me since childhood / early teens.

I grew up loving film more than anything (even more than art which came close second). Film was massive in my house growing up. I watched 100’s of films. My dad sold furniture most of his life and did a deal on a sofa with the local video shop owner - unlimited rentals for us. I was like a sponge. There were little restrictions on what I could watch either. Roeg's Don't Look Now as a youngish child has stuck with me my entire life, what were my parents thinking ha? But I am grateful, it's a masterpiece as were a lot of the other films I watched growing up.

And a big chunk of my youth was spent making films on a camcorder. Editing them with the camera and one VHS player. They weren't very good but I loved it and had the bug.

I always hoped I would be either an artist or a filmmaker. The former seemed more achievable back then.

I went to art school, then studied fine art at university, loved it, but there was always that nagging filmmaker inside me so I ended up doing a lot of video work on my degree. Quite odd video installations. I also loved painting but always felt it was a little pointless as 'the means of production' were changing so fast (digital media was really taking off at this time) so I started using video as a 'painterly' medium. I created long videos of abstract morphing forms. Basically digital paintings that slowly changed over hours. Barely noticeable unless you sat there for a long time. I was happy with those.

I got my degree but then fell into graphic/web design because I had spent most of my Fine Art degree using the new digital tools available. I never felt comfortable as a designer, I still don't. I was never trained in graphic design. But it has been my main source of income for the last 20+ years. Career wise, I'm a jack of all trades, master of none if I am honest.

I have always carried on with my art on the side, some years more productive than others. I did a solo show many years back which went well. But I kind of chickened out of that dream as I always liked having money, never a lot but enough to get by. Chasing the art dream would have meant a lot of sacrifices, I think I still regret that decision now.

Anyway, the reason I am posting. I set myself a task this year - to finally complete a film script. I have tried many times and failed many times. None of my ideas really hooked me to the point where I could sit day after day and complete them. The last couple of years I had an idea that did stick. I spent at least a year building it inside my head. It grew and grew. Characters came to life. The plot became real. I thought to myself I need to do this now. I'm in my 40's, time isn't on my side. Especially to change direction with 2 children to support. But I thought I would give it a go and glad I did.

I'm happy to say I am 75% through the project. I am really pleased with it so far. It kind of spilled out of me. I'm sure working on these things becomes easier in your 40's. Way more life experience. Pretentiousness is low. Your inner voice is clearer. Screenwriting suits me as well, it's v.functional writing. It's about telling a story in a concise way.

So the point of this post? I just think your 40's are a great time to achieve lifelong goals if you can make the time (i.e. many late nights). A few years ago I decided to achieve some music goals also (something I have also done pretty much my whole life). That went well but I know deep down there are many others better who have probably devoted more of their lives to it and are more deserving.

I haven't completed the project yet but I know I will. And will anything come of it? I hope so, it's definitely a product of the times (in an unexpected way) but I will also be happy if it doesn't. Just doing/completing something I have always wanted to try will be enough.

It would take balls of steel to share it on here when complete, not sure I could but who knows.

Sorry for the length of this post but I thought I would share my thoughts as I would love to hear any other members' experiences of screenwriting if you have any? Or of achieving major goals in your 40's.

    Thanks.

p.s. What thread to put this in? midlife crisis or blog... either really but blog will do :)
