A very good friend of mine passed away on Thursday and was found at his home on Saturday of suicide. Another distant friend died a week ago from an overdose. I can't stress this enough, but please check on your friends that may be struggling with depression through all of this. I just spoke to my homie Chris before the lockdown and we were going to hang out. After the lockdown I never checked in but just assumed I'd see him on the other side. Work loss, money, and isolation was too much for him. I wish I could have called him when he crossed my mind. It may not have changed anything, but now I will never know. :'(

It's been a while since I've shared anything here. Lots has changed, my companion pup passed last December, that was a hard one. Quit my job, mostly because it was sucking the life out of me, so I jumped, still haven't landed lol. Have been living with a complex meniscus tear for 5 months. Finally had surgery this week. there's this guy with a cart he pushes around the neighborhood selling elote, a mexican street corn that's delicious. he honks a horn as he passes, like a lo-fi ice cream truck for fatties.

i've partaken a couple times, finding myself high and/or drunk often during quarantine. these things are the so-cal vegetarian equivalent of a doner kebab at 4am.

now the fucker is on to me and sits outside my house every day spamming that horn, knowing full well i'm an indulgent, generally inebriated fuck with a couple dollars in my sofa cushions, and the fact that he's right has made it really annoying. so now i'm in a standoff with the guy, him honking that horn of derision, and me holing up in my house pretending i'm not home.

i figure once he quits stopping here i'll start buying again

Yesterday: I'm in the park walking my dog Lemmy as usual, today was set to be a good day as I'd checked the tides and everything was perfectly timed for a walk through the park and back along the coast for a swim. I really did not expect the absolute nightmare that was about to unfold...

2pm i took this photo, failing to frame dog being a looper beside a couple of impressive fly agaric mushrooms:

About 5 minutes after this photo was taken the shit hit the fan. I don't often throw sticks having heard horror stories of dogs getting bits stuck in their stomachs, but I had forgot to bring tennis balls with me and when the dog picked up a big stick and dropped it right in my path, without even thinking I threw it for her... i was looking away when it happened but I think when it landed it must have stuck in the ground at an angle and she flew at the other end with her full weight... When I heard a yelp and saw the blood I knew it was bad.

She was bleeding from below her tongue, it looked really nasty and I knew I had to get her to the nearest vets, but we were deep in the park at the time and we had walked there from home so the quickest way (rather than walking to the main park entrance and relying on hailing a lift with a good samaritan) was a 20 minute walk by a back path. So, I phoned ahead to the the vet and they said they would clear a spot and bring her right in.

While on the phone to the vet I thought Lemmy could walk it, but she was losing so much blood by exerting herself it was horrifying (i think easily a pint at this point) I had to pick her up... terrifyingly she was colder and noticeably lighter than her normal 40 pounds.

So, I ran both of us covered in blood, cradling pup for about 10 minutes through the park. We passed about 6 people with varying levels of concern but they were mostly old folks or women with kids or walking multiple dogs so there was nothing they could do to help (my girlfriend can barely lift the dog for more than a few seconds)... From the park I crossed a railway bridge and up a hill towards the vet... I'm reasonably fit but was about to collapse from exhaustion, occasionally reassuring the dog and a couple of times out of desperation shouting for help at passing cars. A right fucking mess :-| Just as I was weighing up wether I could physically make it up the rest of the hill I was able to shout over to some workmen and one of them ran over and gave us a lift the final 500 meters to the vets in his van.

I only realised while passing a socially distanced queue outside the vets I had no mask with me but they were waiting and beckoned us in. A woman with her spaniel (who I'd probably bumped out of her appointment) opened the door and i ran straight in and plonked an incredibly frail doggo on the vets table. The vets just opened a couple months ago and bizarrely I'd only just registered the dog there last Tuesday to get her prescription for flea and worm meds... On inspection the wound had clotted over and stopped bleeding so the vet decided that given how weak she was to put her out the back room for an hour for observation as she may be in shock and wouldn't be safely check her cell counts or potentially give her a blood transfusion or IV. To my surprise they brought a chair and a mask so I could sit out there with the dog. I pretty much spend 24 hours a day with this pup so I didn't want to leave her there alone. I didn't even use the chair, just climbed in and sat on the floor of the cage with her...

I'd phoned my girlfriend 3 times and I'm glad she hadn't answered - because at the point she phoned back dog had just stood up and was wagging her tail at the sounds and smells of other dogs in the vets and I was feeling slightly more positive about the situation. By the time she arrived in a taxi 15 minutes later, we were back in the vets office where doggo had perked up so much the vet just gave us some painkillers, told us we should take her home and keep an eye on her and to get her some red meat to build up her iron. Remarkably with no treatment we did the 10 min walk home with bloody pup pulling on the lead scaring the school kids.

This was taken just before we went back in to the vets office around 3pm:

But the worst for us was yet to come... Several hours later with the vets now long closed we cant get the dog to eat or drink at all, her heart rate has raised to 160, she's struggling to breathe and we're considering bringing her to the notoriously shitty and expensive night vets to get her an IV. In a last ditch attempt at 3am I use the syringe that came with the painkillers to shoot some water in her mouth. I dunno how, but I hacked the dog! she opened her mouth for the first time in hours, swallowed and licked her nose then we were able to use a sports bottle to get her to drink some more... by 5am she's up and drinking from her bowl. My girlfriend stays on the sofa beside her but I decide to go upstairs to lie down... to my surprise the dog follows me up and jumps in the bed at my feet.

I'd set an alarm for 8:30, the vets open at 9 so this was going to be the last attempt at getting the dog to eat before bringing her back over to get an IV or transfusion. I put one of her wet pouches in her bowl and she wolfs it down and drinks about a pint of water, I cooked a steak rare and blended it with rice and gravy and she had that too... by 11 she was running around with a ball in her mouth... by 2pm as we were getting ready to bring her back to the vets for a checkup she was barking at the post man and running around the garden like a mad thing...

This photo from our garden at 2pm today (24 hours after the first one):

She's not out of the woods yet, she has a soft lump in her throat that could be internal bleeding, but could also be her saliva glands or a cyst caused by infection so keeping a close eye on her and could well be in for surgery tomorrow if it gets worse. But the immediate threat of death is gone, she's snoozing at my feet right now and I am totally emotionally and physically drained and need some fucking sleep.

[TLDR] never throw sticks for dogs.

So I'm back at work since Thursday. I decided to take a couple days off to really digest this new reality. Of course I have been talking with him all weekend. Saturday they spent the day in the city checking out museums, his favorite was the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Art. He mentioned that he had never seen a work of art in person. 30 years he has spent studying the masters and learning from books, but has never actually seen a piece of art up close like that. He was 32 years old when he was arrested. My sister told me that they had lunch in the city and they took him out for hot buffalo wings, something else he had never eaten and now loves. I keep asking my sister how she sees him and how she thinks he is doing. She tells me that he is often confused and tripped out on everyday mundane things. He was tripped out when they were in a parking lot and approached one of those parking ticket dispensers. Swiping a credit card and pushing a few buttons and having the ticket come out was something he had never seen and had never thought about, little things like that. She tells me he is totally spaced out sometimes like he has a thousand different feelings all at once and other times he is like a child discovering new things. Yesterday they drove to the Mexican state of Toluca which is near the capital, but at a higher elevation with snow capped mountains, he loved it. They were there to deliver a painting to a client.

If you were wondering he has made up his mind and is going with the new iPhone instead of Android. lol

As far as posting on here and wondering about his past and his crimes. None of that matters anymore it's all in the past and seriously nothing you guys write is going to offend me, like at all. There is no secrets and there is nothing that the news outlets in Mexico and the U.S. haven't already reported. Our family has gone through years and years of exposure to every type of criticism or praise that you can imagine. We are so happy, I am so happy I don't think anything could get me down anymore, like for the rest of my life!

He has not started painting of course he is setting up his studio right now. I am very interested to see what his new paintings will look like now that he is free. For years his paintings have had a dark side to them or a strong political angle to them. He said he couldn't help it, as much as he tried to make happier art it always turned dark. His painting were also dull at times like void of color. It was difficult for him to access a good amount of quality paints. I would place orders for him through Utrecht.com in NYC because that was the only place he liked to buy paints from if he was not mixing his own paints. But that got to be very expensive. I would often treat him with a tube of white oil paint made from Led or Zinc from the website and just one tube was an easy $150. So he had a limited source of supplies. He would make his own knives and spatulas too. Now he has access to the best tools possible. Maybe a dope set of brushes would be a great Christmas present for him but I also want to get him a MBP like a 15" one he has no idea what those things are capable of doing haha.

Here are a few pics from the weekend.

In the first one he is with his wife checking out some of the Architecture in Toluca.

This is him inside the Rufino Tamayo museum in Mexico City.

This last photo is so powerful and moving to me and my whole family. This is just about an hour after being released. My little sister is holding him. She is 20 and has never known him outside of Prison.

I don't know why people always complain over the lack of design content on QBN. It's a forum made up of designers. Sure, most of the time is used on deciding whether we should delete the NSFL scat facial porn thread, or discussing SimonFFM's latest work.

But if you want to discuss crushed blacks or the difference between Neutraface and Josefin Sans, you'll find plenty of people who will.

In conclusion, all designers, talking amostly bout other stuff. But ready to discuss design.

We just finalized a contract on a house in the 'burbs, with a closing date of May 15. Locked in a great rate on the mortgage yesterday evening and everything. Holy shit.

I'm SO glad I had my money in cash form — for the down payment and closing costs — and not in the markets before this all went down. Took the homie to one of his favorite canyon spots over the weekend because there was supposed to be a windstorm. He seems to enjoy them in the way most dogs stick their heads out of windows.

Well it ended up turning into an actual sandstorm with 50mph winds that broke the zippers on our tent.

It was so gnarly that I had to keep all of my actual camera gear locked up, woke up covered in sand. He and I had a great time, but the gf and her bulldog.. not so much.

I don't think you can embed video here, but three links. One of them is Leo barking at himself as his voice came back to him from the canyon walls.

The first week at my new job is done, and I have to say that I think I really lucked out.

So far, I haven't run into any massive egos, and everyone I've spoken to seems genuinely supportive and empathetic of others, including my boss, the managing director. And this is what everyone I've spoken to says of their colleagues, too.

Now, of course, it's been remote over Zoom so far, and I haven't met anyone in person yet, but still ... what a refreshing change it makes from other, toxic agencies I've had the misfortune of finding myself in over the years.

Went through old HDs today, because I was searching a specific set. I didn't find it, but I stumbled upon these old photographs. I took them on August 31st, 2001. I booked a flight in a helicopter to photograph the NYC skyline from above. It were the most expensive 8 minutes of my life and I remember thinking that even hookers offer their services at lower prices.

This was still on film and I only have these images in very small sizes. But what still gives me chills is what happened only 11 days after I took these images.
