Continuing on maquito's post about Christmas:
    https://www.qbn.com/reply/399486…

I understand the history behind Christmas and it's relation to the solstice. But when did Christmas' current secular & globalist shape take place? Is it a direct American export with regional tweaks? A snapshot of the promised America at it's highest? Or is it more like evolutionary convergence?

    • Are talking about the celebratory trappings of Christmas, like the decorated tree, and all that? Cos that's a German export.Continuity
    • But I always saw Christmas as an American package. That's what I meant when I said I understood the history behind it.palimpsest
    • Was that a Christmas package pushed as a whole to the rest of the world or did we separately come to it (evolutionary convergence)?palimpsest
    • NYC after the turn of the century (1900s), the commercial christmas was born and grew. Soon after came the jingles and cartoons to lock it in.monospaced
    • It took all the parts it wanted from its European heritage, of course, and the two never fully separated since either. I find it evolving very fast now, too!monospaced
    • When I was a kid, people didn't put up trees the day after Thanksgiving. They waited a couple weeks. The consumerism is still the same, though.monospaced
    • When I was a kid, people would put up lights the last week of October in the DR. Commercial Halloween and Thanksgiving wasn't big back in the late 80sMaaku
    • Seems like it's a weird mix of a lot of different traditions. But the modern version of Santa Claus as a fat guy in a red suit was made up by an Americanyuekit
    • cartoonist. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer was invented as part of a department store marketing campaign. So yeah I think you could say it is an Americanyuekit
    • invention in terms of the imagery people associate with modern day Christmas, along with the commercialized aspect.yuekit
    • Didn’t coca-cola invent santa as we know him? Why romanticize any of those trappings. Celebrate the solstice and the seasons, not the products we associate w itscarabin

    • If you think about the whole thing, it's actually really fucking weird. It's like a holiday celebrating American capitalism bootstrapped on top of anyuekit
    • older religious holiday. Also possibly the first holiday the entire world celebrates? You could wrrite some interesting stuff about this from an anthropologicalyuekit
    • perspective for sureyuekit

Since the topic of age is a fairly active one let me add to it with more comments here.

(QBN has stood the test of time,,,,it is a small miracle....but long energetic threads are diminished by the design...)

I am 62 and I still push pixels, as they say. I do Motion Design for a Fortune 500 company and I still enjoy doing it. And I am valued for what I do, in fact I am a bottleneck because I am so busy. My work winds up being on social media and websites and other places.

What I hear in this discussion is this idea that somehow design is a young person's game. That is bullshit. Designers are not different than artists - you create things. If you are passionate about your work you don't stop when you are 35. And experience makes you better. Think about how many famous artists and illustrators and designers did their work until their dying breath. Matisse did a drawing a few hours before he died....Paul Rand worked until the end...and so on.

I have no plans on stopping. I have more work in me. And the work I see coming out is inspiring in that a lot of it sucks and some of it is amazing and new. It is a fascinating time to be a visual designer because everything is changing under our feet.

There is a sense in the work world that you have to move to management at a certain age. Why? What is wrong with honing your skills and continuing to provide value with the work of your two hands, instead of directing others?

At my work they can throw some bullshit copy at me and I can turn it into a competent piece of motion design in a day. This is what experience and skill can do. And despite the bullshit copy, I still enjoy putting it together.

And that, really is the key. Since we all mostly have to work, what kind of work gives you some satisfaction? I still love making key frames. I learned late in the game that I did not enjoy trying to tell some arrogant 20 something why their design idea was not working (you see why I should not be a manager).

Union tradesmen like electricians don't feel like failures if they do not move into management, Lawyers still work on individual cases as they get older. Look at Guiliani! (that's a joke son)

You do have to be a little bit brave though. Because our culture, and those arrogant 20 somethings, do not view an aging designer as someone to learn from, unlike a lawyer or electrician. Many think you should just move into management, old man. Fuck them I say.

    • Couldn't agree more. The thought of swapping creative for management is horrid. Yeh, fuck all those arrogant upstarts ;)Morning_star

    Great post dkoblesky.

Regarding age, where I see the problem is the job location and salary. At least in the UK.

Majority of creative jobs are in London.
Yet salaries are average £35k ~ £45k for mid to senior roles...

    • 10 years ago I saw some senior roles advertised at £50k, 10 years later, stilling seeing a few of the top senior roles at £50k.shapesalad
    • 10 years and no adjustment for inflation, cost of living. LDN average house price 2010 = £280k, 2020 = £480k. Senior Designer 2010 £50k, 2020 £50K...shapesalad
    • Try being 45+ in that economic climate.shapesalad
    • Especially when your partner earns near to 0, and you have no family wealth behind you. £50k in London gets you a nice flatshare lifestyle, not a family life.shapesalad
    • Prices in LDN have been shit forever, but your 2010 valuation is at least £100k under what it should be. Things are bad, but not THAT bad.Nairn
    • Well.. maybe it's more a micro economic problem then... as in my economic problem.shapesalad

    I bought a lottery ticket.

Now I remember why I don't buy lottery tickets - I've spent the last 20 minutes day-dreaming about all the Good Things I'd do with the money if I won it all, worthy fuck that I am.

Such a stupid waste of time.

I also think the prizes on these are beyond ridiculous - like, sure, life-changing, but for most people I believe - life destroying. Dumping £175m into most people's lives is simply going to fuck all their relationships up, even if they do try to sort out everyone in their social circles and community.

We decorated our tree this week with all the beautiful glass ornaments I’d bought for my husband over the past 15 years. Each commemorated some special moment from the year they were given. I spent ages sourcing each one so it would be special. The fucking tree fell down during the night. Almost every ornament smashed. We cleaned up the glass shards and pine needles, then dragged the tree and the base out to the balcony. We didn’t move the plastic sheet that the tree was sitting on until later in the day because we had to get the kid to school and us to work.

When we got home, we moved it and saw that the hardwood floor had buckled from all the water that had somehow seeped underneath the plastic.

That night we brought the tree back in to get it back in water. As we were setting it up my husband spun it around a little to get the best side facing out and a ton of fucking bird shit when flying all over the living room. It was splattered on the ceiling, on the walls...

We spent the rest of the night drinking and cleaning bird shit out of our living room.

    FUCK 2020.

Sorry to hear about the ornaments. Our toddler smashed a couple that had meaning this year.

    • It's small consolation, I'm sure, but this is one of my favourite QBN posts of 2020.Nairn

Do I ever fucking hate dating, now that I'm in my 40s. Fucking hell.

    • Have you considered going your own way lololnb

    • Remember how much better it were to date in your 20s? That’s the key, now you’re 40, date women in their 20’s.shapesalad

    • Those lovely late-twenties and thirties that you're meeting are relieved you're not in your 50s. You're a catchmisterhow
    • Ug. 45. Maybe I have to slug it out till I’m 60- then it’s all smooth sailing with the golden girls.BH26
    • I think its math, as people get older more will pair up. People in 20s are not as paired up in 40s.eryx
    • This causes more fucked up people to have partners leave in 30s before kids and crippling debt. Those that are still fucked and can stick it out...eryx
    • At this point only the really fucked up separate. So singles left are either out of a relationship because really fucked up or left someone really fucked up.eryx
    • The normal fucked up can stick it out till one dies. I think 70s or 80s. Sex is likely amazing. But yeah date chicks in your 20s if you can .eryx
    • Depends on many factors. Are you using Tinder? Well, good luck. You may have to lower your standards.NBQ00
    • And otherwise if you do meet nice women, they expect you to have your shit together in your 40’s. And have something to offer. Remember, women want babies.NBQ00
    • wait @NBQ why am i supposed to be the one with "offerings", aren't we equal now?renderedred
    • lol. And to quote the MGTOW gurus: "Chase excellence, not women"NBQ00
    • Become religious. Some religions have arranged marriages. Some even allow for multiple wives. Problem solved.shapesalad
    • The woman I had a date with last night was saying how it won't work because 'an exact copy' of her ex, and there were 'a lot of red flags', etc.Continuity
    • And that she'd apparently worked on herself a lot since that relationship. Thanks, that's a great and classy way of dealing with it. Pfft.Continuity
    • Simply saying it wouldn't work would suffice, thanks. I'm not the ex.

      I really hate life sometimes.

    • That’s just her using an excuse because she didn’t like you enough for whatever reason. How can you tell in one date already anyway.NBQ00

    • That situation is very unpleasant for everyone, best you can get out of it is a weird fucking :Dsted
    • Someone telling me that they've worked on themselves a lot on date is a red flag for me. I'm happy for you that you escaped that.palimpsest
    • Thanks fellas.
@palimp: I was also thinking I dodged a bullet after a bit. Apparently she's still sore from her relationship with her ex to drag that up.

What are downtown areas gonna be like in a year?

Is anyone ever going to an office in an office park again?

    • I rebuilt my life around my new home office. I don't see myself back at any kind of office anytime soon.utopian
    • You should visit Skid Row in Downtown LA area and see if you find a nice office there.NBQ00
    • I went to downtown in my city, some hobo asked me if I had drugs to sell...

There's this guy I've been working with for at least 15+ years (closing in on 20) that fairly creative / entrepreneurial when it comes to food and entertainment (he owns bars and restaurants around the US and also publishes online / printed mags etc... busy guy). The thing about him though is he has always just been very humble / kind... usually more interested in making sure I'm doing okay than he is in talking about his current projects etc (simply put: he's a really good guy... a good friend).

So I'm sitting here working over the weekend cranking out some HTML5 banners... I've got Food Network reruns playing in the background from the late 90's / early 2000's (just letting Hulu play). An episode of Iron Chef America comes on... first Judge they introduce is THIS GUY... the dude I've been working with for years (he didn't have hair back then either!!). Needless to say my loud 'WHAT THE FUCK?!" startled my wife and the pets...
