Continuing with the climatic contrast a bit, I am always struck by the way in which the inhabitants of the northern hemisphere are surprised by the strange cultural heritage of Santa Claus, Christmas trees, sleighs and all that shit, when they visit Uruguay.

Although the temperature by the end of December is around 86 degrees, the "white Christmas" has always been incorporated, inherited. Enough is to say that in some shopping malls, there is even artificial snow falling from the sky over the huge pine tree.

Even culinary customs are bizarre. With 86 degrees, we usually eat nougat, nuts, drink sparkling wine and egg-nog. I think that I will never understand how there can be such a literal interpretation of a tradition which’s roots are in an absolutely contrary climate environment.

    • I wonder if this happens anywhere else.maquito

    LinkedIn's so desperate...

My profile, such as it is, is pretty much empty from what I can remember - I've only got a sodding LinkedIn acount to stop Indians claiming to be a director in my business (as happened when I closed my LI account a year or two back. I'd not be entirely shocked to learn that they purposefully made it look like someone was claiming my business, just to get me back again).

Just had a noxious exchange with some poor customer service rep at a domain company I've used for over 20 years but am about to no more. I registered my first domains with easily.co.uk in the late 90s and always used to recommend them, but something bad happened a few years back and their service and web interface became TERRIBLE.

I stuck with them for a few domains, simply because I'm lazy and couldn't be bothered to upgrade my main web hosting with another company to accomodate the domains.

Anyway, my main work domain expired 5 days ago, but I was only informed after the event. I've just tried to login to sort it, but can't through the terrible interface for.. well, reasons I can't begin to fathom. I even have a valid payment method on there, so why it didn't just auto-update, I can't tell. Checking again the email they sent, I need to phone them. Why, i don't know.

15 minutes on hold, and then a horrid conversation with someone who clearly won't recognise how terrible their service and interface is and - this is the really bad part, imo - she asks me to confirm the first 4 letters of my password! I'm like - you can see my password? She clearly doesn't see a problem with this "we do this all the time", and then it goes downhill from there. I apologise to her and suggest she try and find work with a better company, which was a bit shit of me, but whilst I could tell she might be a nice person underneath (sounded Canadian), she's clearly oblivious to how bad her company is and was being combative rather than apologetic.

Anyway, turns out my phoning her was a complete waste of time - apparenty I had to email some other department. Thanks. Why didn't you just say that in the email, rather than "you need to phone us"?

    Total clusterfuck.

OMG... was talking to my mom today and she was asking about Christmas suggestions (we STILL do this...) and she said "I saw this really neat shirt with a cool pattern on it that looks like something you would wear." My immediate instinct was to remind her that I asked her a decade ago to stop buying me clothes for Christmas.

She couldn't quite describe it and said she'd send a link...

It was THIS f'ing nonsense that I keep seeing advertised on Twitter:

I was hilariously mortified that she'd even think I would be remotely interested in wearing something like that. I think my only reaction was to say "Do you even know me? Have you even noticed how I dress for the past 20 years?"

My dog is an aggressive cuddler in bed. Every day I wake up squeezed in the snaked amount of real estate. She takes up an entire human sized space on the right side of the bed, head on the pillow even, and wants to spoon. My bf tangles his legs up with mine on the other side.
