OMG... long story short... my stepdad fell for a financial scam in the past couple weeks that resulted in him missing a multitude of red flags:

    - someone calling from Apple about a problem with his phone
    - Being asked to install remote viewer software on his phone and my moms
    - Being asked to download cash transfer apps
    - Staying on the phone with this guy who was trying to "fix" a problem on his phone for close to six hours yesterday. WTF...

Discovered yesterday that they guy transferred / stole all the money in their checking account at the time - about $7,500. My stepdad has enough stress these days with some headache issues, a busy job, etc. and he feels like an idiot. I feel awful for them.

It goes to show how vulnerable older people are to scams like this. Me - I'm 42 and well aware of all these scams and exploits and such, I was just cringing the entire time my mom was describing it to me. Kind of a a "how can you be this dumb / but people fall for this every single day" thing.

They guy transferred money mostly in $500 increments, but there was a single transfer of $2,300 and some in between. This was all yesterday.

They went to the bank to talk to someone there, at least they're with a big bank that can help them. I went through some fraud issues over the summer with someone filing unemployment in my name, and attempting to take out a small business loan in my name - both of which were caught by the states where it was attempted, and luckily my company provides identity theft protection, so I had someone that could walk me through all the steps, police reports, etc.

But older people, man, they're just aimless out there as to how to deal with these things.

The red flags though... my stepdad is a smart guy and I cannot believe he took the bait, and so many times.

Is it okay to love the work of an artist who’s a complete piece of shit? Do you have a line and where do you draw it?

I’ve been enjoying charlie chaplin’s work lately, completely oblivious to the reality that he was a pedophile. https://www.vice.com/en/article/…

I also found out one of my favorite authors, hakim bey, was into little boys.

And then of course there’s an endless list of musicians that were pieces of shit but produced great work...

I am a bit frustrated, because after presenting 4 aesthetic directiona for a brand book (brand whose client sent an approved logo and contracted us to design it’s brand book), our marketing director decided that we were not prepared to design options for the brand book’s design but that we should propose overall messaging and different brand voice tones.

I am not frustrated by the request to work on that nature of aspects of the brand, in fact I think it’s the way to go, but the client sent a logo, without more, and asked for a damn brand book. They didn't ask for a brand story. They are definitely not paying for us to create it. I wasted about 20hs designing something useless, and now I must start all over again, yeeeei!

Just had the "So... er.. how do you identify?" conversation with someone who works here. They're outwardly female and really nice, but they've always been a bit 'troubled' (given the conversations I've overheard over the last year or so).

I only asked them because they corrected someone when they were referred to as 'She' last night.

Sad thing is, they admitted to having been abused and coupling that with their baggy-clothed but fundamentally feminine appearance, I couldn't help but mentally go all Psyche 101 and draw my own conclusions as to why they're on the path they're on.

Second person this year I've found out has been abused, the other being a very good friend. I actually cried a bit (in anger) when my friend told me, and I felt myself welling up a bit here.

God forbid I ever come across a sexual abuser. I'm not sure how I'd react. Not well, I suspect.
