Last night was the final game of our indoor soccer season where I'm the coach. The kids are not particularly good, and they sign up so that they have something to do in the winter months to stay active. Our game was to be decided on penalties since it ended in a 3-3 tie.
There's one kid on the team who I'll call "D" who was a sweet kid, showed up to almost every game, but was a pretty uncoordinated little guy. I'd often see him dancing around in the corner while the game was going on and have to remind him to come back to earth. He hadn't scored a goal all season, although he got close a few times.
So I line up the boys for the kicks and "D" looks REALLY nervous. I mean shaking, quivering lip, feeling-the-pressure nervous. I lean over and tell him to do his best, kick it hard, and tell me that he can do this. He quietly says, "I can do this". I fist bump him and step away and watch D send the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net for our winning goal in the shootout. Our whole team screams his name - along with me. Hugs and high fives, and D starts crying a little and goes over to his Dad.

Man, it was a beautiful thing to watch.

    • And so the next Ronaldo was borngrafician
    • If I were D.. I'd have missed the goal. And that would be it. No cheers, just hatred.shapesalad

    Never told this history here...

When I was 15 or 16 years old, I participated in a comic contest, the maximum number of pages was 4, I took an opera of about 36 pages that I had just finished drawing.

Well, the thing is, I won. There were complaints from other participants, but the jury excused itself by saying that it was a work that far surpassed the rest in quality, and not just in quantity. Everyone shut up.

A year later, I submitted another comic, this time 4 pages, and I won again.

So for about 4 years, until I started an internship as an illustrator and graphic designer in a printing company and lost interest, and "I didn't have time for this kind of thing anymore".

Thus began my career in the world of communication, skipping the rules and with a monstrous ego.

But I still remember that with relative pride and a smile.

I was a shy Martian in a strange world, skinny and weak, always sick... and this award gave me reasons to believe in myself, I was finally good at something.

Without a doubt, it is one of the best things that has ever happened to me, and without a doubt, if it weren't for that, I wouldn't still be drawing and dreaming at almost fifty years of age.

    Thanks to a crazy jury.

ok. OBBTKNs post inspired me to share my story:

Back when I was also about 17 or 18 I also won a Comic/cartoon contest. It was a contest by a state bank so it was state wide and the price money was crazy high for a contest like this at that time. 10000, 5000 and 2500 German Marks for the first three prizes. It was huge and everyone who was into drawing, took part, even the big names. I was about to finish school and back then I wanted to become a graphic novelist / Comic book artist, so this was a great opportunity for me. I was so enthusiastic I made several comics. One of them I particularly liked, but my girlfriend at that time said, that the humor was too sarcastic. As I didn`t want to miss the chance, I submitted it nevertheless under the name of a friend (couldn’t take my girlfriends name – she also took part) and sent in another comic under my name, which I thought would please the jury more. I told the friend on a side note about my submission „ah by the way I submitted a comic in your name. If it wins you get a 10% share“ and he totally forgot about it.

After the final school exams were done, I went on Interrail the next month touring through France with some friends. When I called back home one day, my mom said I should immediately call back my friend, he has been desperately trying to reach me for the past days (this was the time before mobile phones). When I called him back, he was devastated: The bank had called him to tell him that he had won the first prize, they wanted to set a date for the award ceremony, the press had called to interview him on his ideas, his drawing techniques and where his humor came from, and a nation wide student magazine had even offered him to draw a monthly one pager! He was totally freaked out because he was an absolute non-creative saying he could not even hold a pencil straight and now he was the new cartoon shooting star.

He said no way he was going to the award ceremony so what we did was we told the that it was a collaborative work after all, and I helped him with the drawing. They bought it, so we could go to the ceremony and recieve the price money together. It was so hilarious being there with him. So many people constantly trying to talk to him he panickly trying to dodge the laserbeams, sending desperate looks to me hoping that I would jump in when they asked him questions about the coloring technique or his favorite inking tools and his artistic influences. The newspaper printed a feature story about him and his artistic path (which he hated).
The commission for the magazine didn’t work out obviously. He was quite upset with me and didn`t want anything to do with it any more, so there was no chance for me to persuade him to keep selling it as a collaborative work. After the money found its way on our accounts and he got his share of 10%, he cooled down. We are still good friends.

Wife left today. Seemed to have enjoyed her stay at my hotel, 2.5 years of marriage, all living costs paid for. Would have been fine with it had she not had these 'episodes' every few months and thrown all her inner turmoil into my face. Thankfully my mother witnessed one of these 'episodes', so I don't need to question my interpretation of events.

Now she's using my hotel as storage provider, left all her stuff boxed up. She didn't even clean the toilet last weekend... I'm left to clean the toilet. Make sure you don't marry someone with undiagnosed PTSD.

    @a_aachen:

Something similar happened in my life 25 years ago. A friend of mine came over to my apt every week to practice dj-ing because I had 2 turntables and he couldn't play the music loud where he lived.

He was quite a good dj (and later had several radio shows). There was a DJ contest by Red Bull and he produced a demo tape at my place. As I wasn't good enough, he produced a second tape and send it in under my name.

I won a place in the DJ workshop with Carl Cox, but I told my friend, no way that I am going since he mixed this tape that won. So, I called Red Bull and asked if he can come instead of me, but they refused.
