My 16 year old nephew is really into making video games. He's taking high school computer science and they have been building games in a variety of apps. He's built "games" using Dreamweaver, Processing JS, and a few other platform I don't know what he was talking about. He said he's making something in Blender to import into another platform.
For Christmas, should I get him:
a) a book about building games
b) access to an online course about game design
c) cash towards the "gaming PC" he wants to buildIf a) or b), which title(s) would you suggest?
- imho, ask him what he uses, and if he's vague, suggest Godot and invest in learning it. It does 2d/3d, is open source and well-respected.Nairn
- I'd say c, but this might be interesting
https://www.mastercl…spl33nidoru - They did some godot, yeah!nb
- I'd say C too, in that case - learning materials can best be had ad hoc as needed from internet/discord channels, etc.Nairn
- i'm sure a tome on general game theory or advice would also be good - but do 16 year olds read things on paper any more?Nairn
- Yea they do. He loves novels.nb
- What's your budget?monNom
- I think a decent pc or gfx card at the least is the most critical. Learning can come from YouTube, forums, the library (free Linda.com courses there I think)monNom
- $40 to $150nb
- this course is great https://www.udemy.co…robotinc
- https://store.unity.… mb other platform was unityuan
- Perhaps get him a Good Keyboard?Nairn
- Give it to him as “seed money” you can be his first investor.ben_
- I think as a beginner its better to get instant results from your work so I would start with Unity Game Engine. https://www.reddit.c…dorf
- Resources online are good enough for a beginner to get started. As he progresses he can look into Algorithms & Data Structuresdorf

Working on the shortest, darkest day of the year should be illegal.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you believe or don't, I hope you have a peaceful and fulfilling Christmas break. Good will and happiness to all of you.
-------------------------
I've never read the lyrics to Greg Lake's 'I believe in Father Christmas'. It's my favourite Christmas songs. I kinda wish i hadn't. Jeez, what a fucking downer...the last two lines.
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter's light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in father Christmas
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise
I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish, pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
Hallelujah, Noel be it heaven or hell
The Christmas we get we deserveFuck you 2020.

Payroll company sent me a letter saying there was a breach in 2019 and they just finished an investigation and DOB and SS were stolen.
They offer identity monitoring service and say I can freeze my credit too.
Should I worry? Should I freeze my credit?
I already keep an eye on my credit and it's been a year since the breach supposedly.
- It’s a sleeping tigerGnash
- post more porn!utopian
- Is there any reason not to freeze your credit? You can always unfreeze with a little legwork if required. Should be the default IMO.monNom
- Thank them for telling you a year later.futurefood

- This is why Ikea(-like) is so cheap. Room and Board might cost a lot more, but it shows up assembled and they put it together for you, take the trash out, etc.formed
- A buddies song about IKEA: https://www.youtube.….ideaist
- I have assembled a big IKEA wardrobe last year, took me half a day, i felt pain in my legs, back and arms for 3-4 daysBennn
- working on the floor kills me. Also manual screwdrivers. I bought an electric drill for the future.Bennn
- I feel your pain. I did the same last year. I ended up paying someone to help me.Chimp
- Should've posted to the "signs you're getting old" thread!nocomply
- But in all seriousness, I had to assemble an IKEA dresser set a few years ago, and I bought out the kneepads and power drill before even opening the box.nocomply
- My right hand, wrist, fingers, hurt. A LOT. I’m paying for someone to assemble any future of these mofos.maquito
- Oh! Almost forgot: I had to remove and screw back all the slides because I put them backwards. 24 in total.maquito
- lol Classic! There's always something backward, always :DBennn

Passed my dmv road test this morning!
I got a drivers license when I was 15 and drove for well over a decade until my car was stolen in San Francisco. Then I moved to NYC where my license eventually expired and I didn’t need to drive for over a decade. But now I’ve moved to the burbs and need to drive, so this is a long time coming. :)
- Congratulations!PhanLo
- congratsfadein11
- YEAH BOIII!!!ideaist
- How does driving feel? Was sketchy as fuck for me after my 15 year NYC stint.duckseason
- wow I totally would have assumed you would have gotten a lisence right when you moved. how did you survive this long without a car?shellie
- After an hour behind the wheel it’s like I was a regular driver again. I’ve been driving here with a learner permit for 6 solid months.monospaced
- Congratulations. Stay safe!palimpsest
- shellie, when I moved it was peak covid. DMV was closed. No road tests either. Getting the permit was delayed. Then waited months for a road test.monospaced
- I planned to have this done before I moved and bought the house. But lockdown started a week after the offer was accepted on the house.monospaced
- We had a car. I just wasn’t driving it legally. Haha.monospaced

Watching the Predator movies this year for the Holidays instead of the usual Die Hard series, as this year was both alien and brutal
- I've only seen the OG Predator. Are the sequels worth revisiting for a casual fan? I've seen the OG 20 times or so.DRIFTMONKEY

I haven't done jack shit in terms to improve myself to any degree whatsoever this year. I drink more, I eat more and I generally do less to contribute positively to my environment.
Today I reached out to one of the local soup kitchens here in Las Vegas. This town will get hit really hard come the new year, lot's of new homeless families to be expected... It's a sad thing - the least I can do is offer my skills in a kitchen. I hope they write back.
- Don't be so hard on yourself either. This year took a lot out of us. Everyone. Making it to the end is a big positive, and we made it. That can be enough.DRIFTMONKEY

Yesterday, I watched »Great Expectations« on TV. It was the first time I watched a movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow which is a bit odd as she is not a newbie.
I was in the right mood for such kind of movie and enjoyed the weight of the words and the turgidity. You could definitely tell, it was based on a Charles Dickens novel from 1800 something.
This quote would work well as an artist statement:
“Sometimes the water is yellow, sometimes it's red.
But what color it may be in memory depends on the day.
I’m not going to tell you the story the way it happened.
I’m going to tell you the way I remember it.”

I think I was abducted by aliens earlier when I took a nap. There’s no other way to explain how those 30 minutes went by like 2 minutes. I literally put my head down into the pillow and a few moments later what felt like only 5 minutes later at most the alarm clock rang. And I didn’t even fall asleep. 30 minutes went by like a few minutes and I couldn’t believe it. Never experienced time going by so quick ever.
- Ok muldernb
- lol @ “literally”monospaced
- Have you never been put under for surgery or anything medical? It’s the same experience. You definitely slept, but it was very deep. Your brain shut off.monospaced

is there a saas product or open source that facilitates the bulletin board style of qbn? idk, something I can install on a webserver. I need something for teams. ..hmm. idk is there a qbn as a service /floss software out there?
