I really hate the job search grind...

  • colin_s0

for the past four years or so i've been living in a co-op artist/anarchist space that last week was tipped to the fire department (primary suspect is a real estate developer as it's in a great location in portland). they gave us 72 hours to get all evidence of people living there out, and then will follow up with a laundry list of renovations to accomplish. needless to say it's probably a few months until the space goes under.

so i'm turning 36 in a few days and have to fucking move all my shit up into my mom's garage. then i dunno. maybe head to NYC and try and get a real job again.

    shitshow holidays.

    • ("co-op" as in we all were in it together psychologically not ownership-wise)colin_s

Project cars anyone? I remember someone took someone else's Suzuki, a few others tend to older makes of some nicer cars I believe. Anyone take on a project car? Take it apart, repair it, reassemble it? Looking at taking one on for next year. Any words of experience to share?

    • I've done this a few times in the past with friends rebuilding old cars. If you don't have the pressure of a timeline, its a great time to bro out.DRIFTMONKEY
    • I have enough work to keep my Multipla running. But a friend of mine is restoring an Alfa SZ, such a beautyOBBTKN

    • ended up buying a 51 convertible chassis (stronger - has the x-member in it) and built up the whole car off that. Like I said - money pit. :PGM278

so recently my windows machine had a system update and i lost power during the update. Now my cpu boots with repairing HD and gets stuck at 3-9% for the past 4 days, did a few restarts and booted in safe mode etc. still no dice.

i guess the only option is a hd repair disk or a windows repair disk?

    • Ya that happened to me once.
End up reinstalling the OS and copy over whatever was on the Harddrive.

Interviewing at a place tomorrow, but other than the (award-winning) founder's bio there's almost nothing about the company online. It's been around a few years and he has a history of running places like it, but all the work is a few years old, there's no presence on social media, and I can't find a single other employee online.

How do I ask "wtf?" without sounding like a dick?

I was so stressed when my contract ended 11/11. I was like Fack, really? Right before the holidays? No way I'm going to get another gig before Christmas.

After a week and a half I got a contract that was also a $5 an hour raise that would carry me through the end of the year and even longer if I wanted. But, today I received a staff offer at another agency for an amount I was prepared to have to fight for. A slight cut from contract work -- but there is always time in between jobs so my rate over time not worked goes down anyway. But, the benefits! Health, dental, and vision benefits fully paid for by the company as well as life insurance. I haven't had health insurance in over a decade. 401k if I want to participate and profit share deal points that could really give me a nice bump. They want me to start January 4th! I'm so stoked.

I'm mostly looking forward to not having the stress of hunting down my checks which is why I decided, I'm going to hang up full time freelancing for a while and when I return I'll be less of a doer and more of a consultant with more executive cred and probably a hellava lot of certs under my belt.

Meanwhile, I got an email from VICE and they want to interview me. (◎⌑◎) When it rains, it pours. But, their Glassdoor reviews are scary. Anybody here work there before?

I bought it. It’s a pile of disassembled shit, but I bought it. 1974 American General FJ-8A light duty delivery vehicle.

People usually turn them into ice cream or food trucks. Sasha Baron Cohen drove one in Borat (his was an 80’s reissue).

No fresh pics yet as it’s still dark out and I didn’t get it home until it was dark last night.

It was a tweakers toy for a while I guess. A lot of self-created and unfinished problems they left for me to attend to... put the gas tank back in, look into the carb, a battery and a starter would be nice, rerun some lengths of several spliced wires. The back door is completely missing...

And get this, my insurance said “nope”. The right hand drive / delivery nature of the vehicle will require commercial insurance or a classic policy from a place such as Haggerty’s.

Already a few hurdles, but friends and surprisingly my father are stoked to work on it so all is good.

Vote on Holland Tunnel Decoration Placement

This week, a NJ man started a petition asking the Port Authority to fix the decorations on the Jersey-side of the Holland Tunnel tolls, because—as you can see above—it looks like a real funky monkey. The tree is over the letter N in the word "Holland" instead of the letter A, which seems like a more natural fit, and the wreath is over the letter U in "Tunnel," making it look like "TONNEL."
