How are those with kids under 12 managing these days? Our 1-year-old hasn't been out with us grocery shopping, in stores, etc. b/c there's too much of a risk and b/c she's too young to mask. We spend all our free time outside where she'll play with others and be around others for short periods of time, but for the most part, she hasn't been out in public much at all. I'm not seeing other little ones out in public either.

It's sad how grown adults can't seem to understand how this is impacting the little ones.

    • Word. Adults acting as unbred kids, saaad!OBBTKN
    • is it your first?uan
    • I just took my 3 year old grocery shopping and to the wine store. He did great with the mask, because it's actually not a problem for kids.monospaced
    • But at age 1? No way. They can't wear a mask, they won't. Nobody expects them to either.monospaced

    • Hang in there — vaccine approval for 5-and-up is coming and hopefully after that the rest will follow.evilpeacock
    • Mine are 4 and 6 1/2. They're totally fine with masks and have been since August 2020. Did daycare / kindergarten this year, and my daughter (6 1/2) has beenmg33
    • in camp all summer. She starts 1st grade on Wednesday. All the other parents in the neighborhood have kept their kids safe, gotten tested when they've travelledmg33
    • I'm vaccinated but wear my mask in every situation that it makes sense to, as much to protect myself as to set a good example for my kids.mg33
    • Our first, my wife and I both have parents who were vaccine-hesitant, now we don't even believe them that they've received it, ones a nurse. WTFwhatthefunk
    • We have MAGA in our family who don't believe any of this and they've yet to hold our child let alone spend time. It's rough with a little one b/c we can't takewhatthefunk

    • At some point though, school and daycare is a necessary risk, no?nb

"My friend Rolf passed away from COVID-19 this week. He would come to every POW! WOW! festival and you could never miss him. He just towered over everyone and was always so full of life. It was all smiles with him and his wife Ashley. They were absolutely the most like-minded and passionate individuals that I know. They would just glow. Anyone that had the pleasure to know the both of them can attest to that. I will miss him so very much. I lost a brother and the world lost a legend."

  • bliznutty9

    The Rules:

    1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.

    2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.

    3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.

    4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.

    5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

    6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help.

    7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.

    8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.

    9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.

    10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there...

    11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms.

    12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it's better not to go out, well, but no...

    13. It's better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don't go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).

    14. You can't go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.

    15. If you are sick, you can't go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.

    16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn't wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?

    17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with " I don't want to trigger panic, but..."

    18. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

    19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don't live under the same roof.

    20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

    21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn't say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.

    22. The virus stays in the air - well no, or yes, maybe, especially in a closed room, in one hour a sick person can infect ten, so if it falls, all our children were already infected at school before it was closed. But remember, if you stay at the recommended social distance, however in certain circumstances you should maintain a greater distance, which, studies show, the virus can travel further, maybe.

    23. We count the number of deaths but we don't know how many people are infected as we have only tested so far those who were "almost dead" to find out if that's what they will die of...

    24. We have no treatment, except that there may be one that apparently is not dangerous unless you take too much (which is the case with all medications). Orange man bad.

    25. We should stay locked up until the virus disappears, but it will only disappear if we achieve collective immunity, so when it circulates... but we must no longer be locked up for that?

    Further to the above..

"WHO launches global megatrial of the four most promising coronavirus treatments"

    https://www.sciencemag.org/news/…

It sounds like there's so much data, research and treatment sharing going on behind the scene and so much accelaration, that there might be some cause for hope.

Humans are an odd lot - typically it's required wars and militarism to bring out our 'best' - turns out it's just threats generally. Ozymandias was right... .

Also, I will always +1 Logan's Run references.

    • I listened to a scientist saying the other day that the sharing on this is incredible. Something he also said was uncharacteristic in normal times.fadein11
    • obviously it's unprecedented times but he said the community has come together way better than expected on this.fadein11
    • On 60 Minutes last night, they interviewed scientists working on this. It was refreshing to hear them say "we're not in competition with each other...mg33
    • ...we're all in competition with this virus."mg33
    • I hope coming out of this this level of rapidly working together continues.mg33
    • yep mgfadein11

We didn't panic over the swine flu (H1N1) because it had an average incubation period of just two days and you'd be contagious for a little over a week after symptoms appeared.

COVID-19 has a much longer incubation period and you are infectious before symptoms show, which are mild.

Mortality rates are also orders of magnitude different: 0.02% for H1N1, up to 3.4% for COVID-19.

Most people recovered from H1N1 without complication, while 19% of COVID-19 patients need to be hospitalized.

That's why we didn't panic about the swine flu.

    • Ok fair enoughNBQ00
    • H1N1 killed 12,000+ in USA, the Red Dragon Death flu from the East, so far has killed 160.robotron3k
    • We don't have enough data to support those mortality figures. It's serious, but bc so many with no/mild symptoms aren't tested the MR% is grossly exaggeratedSteveJobs
    • And how many with no/mild symptoms of h1n1 (or any virus for that matter) do you think didn’t seek med help during that outbreak. Numbers are always skewedben_
    • But h1n1 wasn’t some perfect example of mass awareness and preparedness to measure against. And robo, you said it: “so far”.ben_
    • Look into exponential curves. I really hope you’re correct though.ben_
    • Let's revisit this one in a month shall we?zarkonite
    • I'm speaking only to the mortality figures for any who'd assess their chances of survival based on data they may not understand. Not trying to compare to H1N1SteveJobs
    • Robo, is that really your argument? Global deaths nearing 10,000 and we haven’t even got hit with it yet in America. Thank god no listens to you in an emergencynb
    • Even the most conservative mortality rate for this is an order of magnitude higher than H1N1.i_monk
    • Robo’s cool with it, he hasn’t been within 60’ of another human in years let alone 6’.ben_
