    Lets talk about context.
"30% of hospitalized covid patients will develop serious long-lasting complications."

    Sounds terrifying, does't it?
(BTW, it's true statement based on a recent study from UK)

But we subconsciously don't consider implications of one key words, "hospitalized." If we were to dig deeper, we would experience a profoundly different emotional response.

The study looks at 48,000 hospitalized cases out of 3,000,000 confirmed cases in UK, but some models project that as many as 13mil were infected there. The 48k out of 13 mil makes only .28%. Considering that 30% of that would develop serious consequences, that makes only 0.1 of all cases. (for generic comparison, flu kills that many people).
So yes, "30% of hospitalized covid patients will develop serious long-lasting complications" statement is true but so is "0.1% of covid cases will develop serious long-lasting complications."
Both statements producing a vastly different emotional reaction.

    Source: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/…

    • many people that said "it's not that serious" died alone on a hospital bed.

      never tempt faith.
      grafician
    • How did you manage to read "it's not serious" from what i posted?pr2
    • at this moment there are 37k hospitalized cases. That number is updated regularly. The total cumulative hospitalizations is MUCH higher.monospaced
    • The cumulative hospitalizations is 350,000. Of the projected 13M cases, the percentage hospitalized is now 2.7%. 1/3 of that is 1.2% with complications or deathmonospaced
    • Now, that is using your model with the extreme high of estimated infections. If you use the confirmed 4M, the numbers are way worse.monospaced
    • of 3,000,000 confirmed cases, 11.6% have been hospitalized. 3-4% serious complications. MORE than 1% full on dead. Your math is wrong bro.monospaced
    • I mean, your gross mishandling of the numbers has your calculations off by almost a full factor of 10.monospaced
    • mono, did u bother reading the paper??? It specifies the hospitalization (48k) it uses for purposes of its study.pr2
    • yes, and YOU are comparing it to numbers from a different study and a model that predicts a total of 13M infections!monospaced
    • mono, 1% of dead if of CONFIRMED cases. If u included TOTAL number f cases based on estimates, it drops to 0.3%.pr2
    • IF you're gonna do calculuations, use real numbers, not a subset of cases from a study in August.monospaced
    • dude, that paper JUST came out.pr2
    • In the UK there have been 90k covid deaths. That is 0.69% of 13M infections and 3% of 3M confirmed.monospaced
    • That VERSION was updated today. The study (1st paragraph) says its from August 31 to September 30. Derp.monospaced
    • I don't think you read it.monospaced
    • wait, what r u arguing? that it take some time to go over data so by definition you can't have a paper based on study that finished yesterday?pr2
    • I'm saying that your calculations aren't correct. You're not using the right inputs for your math. It's not complicated.monospaced
    • 90k of covid death because of covid or WITH covid, Cause there is a HUGE difference. That's why u might want to read what i posted on previous page.pr2
    • There are 90K confirmed covid deaths in the UK. 350K hospitalizations. There are 3.4M confirmed cases. Those are your numbers to do math with.monospaced
    • You are assuming the 90K isn't all covid deaths, as reported. Also, your math is wrong AF.monospaced
    • mono, if only the scientists listened to you then they wouldn't have to bother writing a 23 numbers-filled paper.pr2
    • 23 pagespr2
    • Why the FUCK are you using 48K patients to calculate total percentages? That's just the people they discharged that month. :/monospaced
    • yo, there are emails of all the people who wrote the paper on the very first page. why don't u email them and ask?pr2
    • They didn't do this stupid AF math, did they? They don't divide their cases by 13M, because that would be wrong. As I pointed out.monospaced
    • u r not even arguing MY main point. even if we go with YOUR math (350k out of 13 mil cases - 3.4 confirmed), then we are still only at 1% of the cases....pr2
    • ...VASTLY different psychological ramification than hearing 30%.pr2
    • 3% (not 1%) v 30%pr2
    • you guys stop it please! damn! The idea is that we shouldn't downplay this fucking pandemic, so chillgrafician
    • so there isn't a scenario were we say after all this "oh, the numbers are actually not that bad, it wasn't that bad" as 2 mil. people already died!grafician
    • also we're not done by a mile, as around 40% of ppl in any country don't want to get any vaccine!grafician
    • my point is, lets threat this shit seriously but also not overblown it into some indescribable monster.pr2
    • @pr2 at best, try to brush up your history and read about all the other pandemics https://www.history.…grafician
    • also the numbers speak for themselves and they keep fucking rising A LOT https://www.worldome…grafician
    • grafician, come on man, would u ever say say "read up the history of the only thing we talked about the past year" to anyone you had an ounce of respect?pr2
    • likewise, noone is denying that the numbers are raising, but what that means for the overall health of the society IS at the core of the debate.pr2
    • lol, go get a damn calculator, you're not even doing the math right with your bullshit numbersmonospaced
    • 350k of 13M isn't 1%. It's 2.7%. But nobody has confirmed more than 3.5M. You're assuming 13M. And you're just guessing not all 90K reported are truemonospaced
    • So it's a fact that 30% of hospitalizations have serious issues. 10% full on die. All you're saying is that if you fudge numbers, it "feels better."monospaced
    • If that isn't your emotional reaction, I don't know what is. :)monospaced
    • @pr2 exactly knowing how the other large pandemics played out is the best thing to learn from, and yes I respect your opinions 100%grafician
    • and yes the numbers can be used to tell a certain "story" but I guess the lessons to be learned are not here yetgrafician
    • one lesson I've learned for sure is that our modern societies depend in large part on the dumbest link in the chain and this pandemic is just the start...grafician
    • ...to a much large phenomenon: the extinction of the human race; if we barely get over a pandemic like this (this was not ebola!), don't even wanna think...grafician
    • ...about fighting in any meaningful way global warming (the great filter - for now)grafician
    • if half your population don't even believes in simple basic facts, it's all downhill from here, sorry boysgrafician
    • oh yes, the weakest link in the chain here being some village man in China eating pangolins or bats influencing the entire world in the processgrafician
    • mono, you are one dim fuck, here is where my 12.4m is coming from:
      https://www.edgeheal…
      pr2
    • which confirms numerous papers that reach similar estimates globally (3-6x of the official figures).pr2
    • I'm not dim. I'm not even questioning that estimate. I'm simply pointing out that your math is absolute shit, which leads to an absolute shit conclusion.monospaced
    • If you are hospitalized because of covid you already have shitty health, call it preconditiondrgs

Pfizer data reveals 98.4% efficacy if you do NOT vaccinate your children with their vaccine.

    https://www.pfizer.com/news/pres…

    • you know what, make a doc about it, that pushes the format of film.tank02
    • do you prefer the Pfizer's spin on the data?pr2
    • that isn’t actually one of the conclusions. you probably decided to do your shitbag math and divided the 18 cases by the placebo group number like a moronmonospaced
    • that isn’t what efficacy is and certainly isn’t how it works in coming to meaningful conclusions. Clown ass math again.monospaced
    • please share your conclusions so we can collectively laugh at your "wisdom."pr2
    • This is showing how effect the vaccine is, regardless of if you showed symptoms before or not.robotinc

    • Unless I am blind (which is possible, please point to where they mention that no vaccine is 98.4% as effective as doing nothing)robotinc
    • the point is that its Pfizer's PR stunt: take the vaccinate = your kid is 100% safe. Great! Lets use the exact same data and point to another equally...pr2
    • ...true statement: don't take the vaccine = your kid is 98.4% safe.pr2
    • and no, do not vaccinate your kids with this! this vaccine is not FDA approved and only got emergency approval which requires WAY less stringent tests.pr2
    • REGULAR vaccines are FDA approved. This one is not.pr2
    • Where did you get 98.4% safe without a vaccine? And what does safe mean anyway? THEY didn’t say that word. It’s not what this is about.monospaced
    • Thanks dr2GuyFawkes
    • Efficacy is about containing the virus and the spread. Children are definitely contracting and spreading it, but have ALWAYS generally been safe themselves.monospaced
    • Your logic is that they are already low risk so no need for vaccine?! That ignores their ability to be a transmission vector. Dude. Wake up.monospaced
    • come on man, our constant fights aside. do your own math. of course THEY don't say that not vaccinating is almost as safe as vaccinating. but are u surprised?pr2

    • pfizer is the FIRST EVER mRNA vaccine to be approved after how long in development? 3? 6 months?renderedred
    • and now mono is going to say: 20 years of research in monkeys and rats :)renderedred
    • You have no reason to believe there’s an issue with the vaccine. No other vaccine has long term health effects. Why would you think this one does?monospaced
    • And yes. There had been decades of research into mRNA functions, for vaccines and other treatments. To act like it’s only months old is stupid af.monospaced
    • Once again you clowns, enjoy being conspiratorial morons, and enjoy the well deserved ridicule from those of us who actually understand and care.monospaced
    • 20 years or research and only one vaccine developed using this technology? Those fat cats at Pfizer and Moderna really don't want to get rich.pr2
    • @mono every other vaccine with low probability of long term effects has been tested on humans for years. i repeat for years!renderedred
    • in a controlled environment and under no political/business pressure.renderedred
    • and now, suddenly it takes 6 months? so one of the two is wrong. testing it for 10 years clinically or straight into the population. which one?renderedred
    • *i guess with this new mRNA messenger technology, it's obsolete to test clinically. we have the population for that ;)renderedred

This argument will fly past the village idiots - we all know who they are - but it will be helpful for those who understands basic math.

Israel has 840k CONFIRMED covid cases and 6,300 deaths. That means that their covid death rates is 0.75%. Even if we assume that they indeed counted every case and every death (they didn't), their OFFICIAL death rare can be used to calculate how many ACTUAL cases there are withing everyone's particular community.
Yes, it IS a gross oversimplification but it gives at least a perspective on how bad each community has it (or had it).

All you have to do it multiply your covid deaths by 135 and it will give you a pretty decent estimate of how many covid cases there were in your community. This is a conservative estimate - meaning there probably were more.

    https://www.worldometers.info/co…

    • Numbers mean shit after 1 year of this. Russia "reported" 100k deaths while the actual number was well over 300k in 2020 alone...not to mention Chinagrafician
    • Brazil stopped reporting? latest were 3-4k deaths A DAY! Stop with these posts to downplay the seriousness of this epidemicgrafician
    • just get vaccinated and move the fuck on to other stuff, please, damn!grafician
    • grafi, lets hope the scientists designing he vaccines didn't have the same "numbers mean shit" mentality.pr2
    • btw, u got some way to cherry pick your data... using Russia and China.pr2
    • LOL so multiply case rate by a factor of over 100x to get real cases? No.monospaced
    • *case rate = death ratemonospaced
    • mono, i get it. my 5 year old has hard time multiplying numbers of more than 2 digits too.pr2
    • Or you know, just consider 10x number of cases for a real count number, based on historic data.
Also above I used the numbers from the website YOU linked!
      grafician
    • ALSO if you REALLY like numbers, you'll see how they differ wildly based on country population, continent, culture, etc.
Israel, Sweden, NZ, are edge cases
      grafician
    • ALSO "scientists designing he vaccines" thought nothing of numbers, 10 or 10M makes no difference if you're contracted to make a vaccine!grafician
    • ALSO there are no "village idiots" - some of us here know a bit more or a bit less about various topics, so make your argument or don't, doesn't matter anywaygrafician
    • I read a lot and posted almost daily in this thread, check it! But that doesn't make me a fucking scientist, so just present new info and leave it at that? tnxgrafician
    • "historic data" - what world do you live in? what historic data? every half-decent country has decent enough reporting system that reflects reality.pr2
    • No. Most if not all countries report # of cases based on tests, not on real spread, which is like I said at least 10x, this was speculated by various sourcesgrafician
    • We will never know real number of infections - ever - as this contagion can also have no symptoms in many, agreed?grafician
    • So why would you go and try to make wild assumptions based on inconclusive numbers?! Stop wasting your time, do something useful.grafician
    • which numbers are inconclusive? is 0.75% from Israel "inconclusive"? and if it's so low there, why is California at 1.6%?pr2
    • is California's healthcare somehow that much less efficient OR because Israel is better at testing thus closer to real numbers?pr2
    • If you can’t figure out why California and Israel are different then you are truly lost. Omfg you have the most narrow view imaginable, and it’s wrong.monospaced
    • bro, by now, according to the fear-mongers, whole world should have it and 40 million should be dead.pr2
    • why aren't you questioning their awful data, and in the process also questing you original assumptions about the virus?pr2
    • what awful data?monospaced
    • the reason we don't have 40 million dead is because enough people are clueless, moronic science denying fucktards like you, who refuse to do the right thing.monospaced
    • If the whole world was like you, then we would be in a much worse place. I wholeheartedly hope you eat your words in the worst possible scenario imaginable.monospaced

When all schools in NYC shut down going remote at begging of the pandemic, my wife found a local religious school that stayed open so the kid at least went to school full time (sadly, in mask with plastic dividers between students and no real between-students play).

Today I ran into my 6yo's pre-k teacher. Sadly, they are forced to go with the same set-up this year. I gotta say, my heart sank.

Of 20mil under 18yo infected, there were 330 deaths. The mortality in this age group is so low, this means that your child is 2x as likely being stuck by lightning than dying from covid.

    When will this madness end?

One of my "friends" bought into the whole masks, quarantine, never contact anyone in person etc ideology. She came down with some symptoms and got tested positive then couldn't sleep out of fear (she's 40 yo, healthy and statistically speaking has nothing to worry about). She can't believe that someone who was so stringent with the preventive measures could get it and yet instead of seeing the horse shitness behind this strict self-imposed lock down that ultimately didn't prevent her from getting sick, she continues to speaks up how we have to continue going down the blind alley.

For me it shows the power of ideology - the moment you buy into one version of reality, there is no hope of saving you from yourself. Lots of people in this thread post personal anecdotes without any understanding that anecdotes, no matter how tragic, have nothing to do with factual reality.

    • fun anecdote. tell her to wear the mask over mouth and nose, they don't work if you use them to blind yourself.uan

  • pr2-24

Based on the hard data from Moderna, Pfizer and Sputnik vaccine phase III trails, if we don't do anything, 3.8% or 4.7% or 5.8% in placebo group will get covid in 180 days (flu is at 4.5% based on CDC estimates).

    • So, we should do something. Fuck off.monospaced
    • Just as we do every year shitting our pants about flu season, dummy.pr2
    • You do realize that the flu was almost eradicated this year because of preventive measures, right?monospaced
    • Holly crap Mono, everything you say is a major slap on the head. Like you never read before opening your mouth? Swing by CDC website and start feeling stupid.pr2
    • CDC yearly estimates of flu vary from 9mil to 43mil, the one from the graph is an average of the past 10 years.pr2
    • lol, "holly" crap? CDC guidelines say to wear a mask, keep a safe distance, and avoid crowds. Because they're not anti-mask highschool educated artists.monospaced
    • Isn't placebo faster to make?
Why don't they just give everybody placebo?
      Problem solved.

    • The people that buy into the Covid madness feel like they're being taken care of. Those that are anti vaccine and see the truth know it's a placebo.palimpsest
    • okay, so while you rack up downvotes from those people, we'll consider that you ignore CDC mask guidelines but find deep meaning and truth in this chart, lolmonospaced
    • Governments look good. And pharmaceutical companies get paid.
      Everybody wins!

    • This graph is saying that people with placebo will get coronavirus, and so will people who get the flu. It's not any groundbreaking finding, derp.monospaced
    • sure mono, sure my boy.pr2
    • You're the one gleaning meaning from this to fit your shit emotion-based anti-mask ideology, while ignoring the primary CDC guidelines. Not me.monospaced
    • But please, let's hear your highschool education level assessment of what this chart means, because we all need a good laugh. Go.monospaced

    • the same scientists that are saying to wear a mask, keep a safe distance, and that all precautionary measures are necessarymonospaced
    • mone, since you are an autistic 7 year old boy, i have no other way to explain to you other than to repeat, the graph is NOT about masks.pr2
    • again, mono, the graphs is NOT about masks.pr2
    • please, tell us what this hard data is showing that contradicts the CDC guidelines on how to react to the deadly virus and prevent its spreadmonospaced
    • once more, since you are slow, the graph is NOT about masks.pr2
    • Oh, I know it's not about masks. But you are an anti-masker, and your posts are all about bolstering your "ideology" that this is all bullshit.monospaced
    • So, please tell us what this means to YOU.monospaced
    • If you're going to act like this is "hard data" that is important, then explain.monospaced
    • There's no denying the moon is made of cheese: there's hard data the moon is real, after all.i_monk
