Junior coder asking HR for a raise, the discussion quickly moves to some business details what he shouldn't know. Like what money others receive and that some have the option to get a percentage from the projects revenues. A PM told him that there was revenue sharing in the first 2 years, the people who moved with the company got a fat raise in exchange for a 3y contract. HR is trying to explain that it isn't wise to compare his money/performance and compensation options to the people who work here from the beginning or the ones currently in leading roles. A really disturbing detail comes up in the form of an hourly rate for a specific client where he is working on-site 16 hours every week on a software integration. HR makes clear that any further action regarding his compensation requires consulting management and that there will be a bonus in a few days. Both sides agree to return to the subject at the beginning of next year. The conversation ends with mutual agreement and HR writes a summary of the conversation.

On Sunday an email is sent into my mailbox at 4:23AM, gets opened hours later. I just read the name and the subject and without knowing who the person is, a quiet FUCK leaves my mouth :) A colleague of ours would like to break up our mutual agreement. While scrolling down in the email thinking that I'm not going to read this now my eye stops on a name. It's one of our clients contact name and he knows what money they pay and not just why but also how :))) He kindly offers that he could do the same he just wants the 75% of the money for the job and we CAN KEEP the client. At this part I had to open up a notepad and start writing a reply, asking how the 25% would finance the 90net pay, liability insurance, taxes and book keeping on the project while making profit. After about three paragraphs in complete red headed rage style producing nothing but an awful lot of unnecessary details and education it hits me:
Why the hell I care about this? This is exactly why there are people whose job is to make sure everybody is happy and gets what they want for the work they do.

I found the summary made by HR, added a note that both the coder and the PM should get a warning for approaching the client in this form and sharing inaccurate information.

Why does it worth stressing on the salaries of your colleagues, or on what percentage of the money you received of the money you actually made for the place that gives you work? If you don't know how, you can always ask how to do it better and make yourself worthy for that money, or go start a company, get the clients, make the resources work, and see how you can pay people.

    • Yeah, never stress out about how much or little your co-workers make in comparison to you. Better as you say, to focus on your own worth and value offered.shapesalad

    SO STOKED!!!!

Pantera are touring for the first time in 21 FUCKING YEARS!!!

They've been on top of my bucket list my whole life and they're playing in Lisbon next year.

About 20 times I've even googled "Pantera cover band" in desperation, knowing that I'd never get the chance to see them live so thought I'd take the next best thing.

When this song plays I might literally shit my pants. The riff at the end is the closest thing humans have come to the Brown Noise. Go to 3:55 if you don't know what I mean

I'm so sad to hear of Terry Hall passing earlier today, I saw The Specials on one of their first tours when they played my local pub (just a month after The Undertones and few weeks before The Cure!) There was hardly a packed audience which was great in one way as there was loads of space for dancing but I don't think the band were that impressed - the review in the following issue of local fanzine Suspect Device (pictured below) pointed this out, but boy they were incredible to see so close in such a tiny venue. I met jerry Dammers in the bar afterwards and bought a hand-stamped copy of their debut 7", it was either 50p or a quid I can't quite remember as I ripped the price sticker from the sleeve - which is now incredibly rare.

If you're 2,5 m away from your 55" TV, can you tell the difference between 1080p and 4k?

    I honestly can't.

    • Maaaybe if i watch a 4K demo reel. But even then 1080p looks 95% just as good from that distance.jagara

Do you expect raises every year if you have a full time job?

I've hit that point where I'm not sure what to do / what route to go.

For 20+ years I've been mainly freelance... lots of branding, graphic design, animation... built tons of websites etc etc. I've worked with and for a number of 'you' over the years (thanks!).

I had to move 3k KM that way (*points left) about a year ago. The move didn't hurt any connections / work but it has trapped me in the middle of Nowhere, New England w/no Agencies / Design houses in site without driving 2 hours down to Boston. All my client relationships remained intact when I moved however shit is changing / work has slowed down (waaaay down w/some of my clients).

I've spread myself around over time (many clients going at one time) but I won't lie... I'm a bit cooked. I need a break... I wouldn't mind working for ONE shop and just one shop. FUCK Mom & Pop businesses BTW - they're all consolidating their shit these days and all that time and effort put in w/ a good chunk of them has NOT paid off... I think I've made the decision that I will no longer take in those sort of projects regardless of what I do (they never end and pay about 1/3 of what they should).

I'm turning 48... I've almost always been in business for myself. I honestly don't know where I stand / what I'm qualified for in terms of in-house work. I've never referred to myself as anything but a Graphic Designer and then I proceed to share various pieces of work showcasing my various skillsets... I've never gone hungry / had any cashflow issues (that weren't of my own making / stupidity)... the work always seems to be there. It's just... I'm cooked. I don't want to keep at the pace I'm moving (I CAN'T keep at the pace I'm moving) ...I'm right at the edge of burning out... my health is effected (as is my marriage)... and I'm not really interested in having another fucking heart attack.

Anyone in this spot? Are there jobs out there for full time freelance folks w/no specific title who has played just about every role? Ideally I'd like to find that full-time / work-from-home gig working w/an actual team w/defined roles etc... I'm about to go into research mode / put together a folio... I'm a little scared though. I'm pushing 50 and have always worked 'for me'... anyone know anybody who made the shift from being their own boss most of their life to finding an agency-type gig? Did they fit right in? What positions where they qualified for?

On my walk to work I have to cross a rather busy intersection where trams, cars, bicycles and pedestrians have to get along on very little room.
Now and then I met a little boy on his way to kindergarten at the zebra crossing. We never talked or something but we both nodded to each other.
Today when I came to that intersection police was just closing off everything and there was a white tent at the zebra crossing.
I later read in the news that there was a boy killed by a car or tram, they don't even know yet.
    It's probably this boy.
He was just 5 years old, the same age as my son.
    This really cracks me up.

to further PonyBoys post from above, it's even more disheartening watching people/friends make a killing just signing paperwork. making tons off deals or commissions in real-estate, investments, finances and other bullshit for literally doing 1 hour of work per week.

I'm not going to pollute Stewart's Recent Work Post, suffice to say no one gives a shit about your input, sadsad.

We've all been there - stuck in a rut at some point in our lives, doing absolute shit with little of value that we can feel proud about, so we externalise our personal criticisms with pointless over analysis of other people's work we've not been immersed in and uselessly critique things we don't actually get.

No one cares. Design is not absolute. There are no Korrekt answers, and what works, Works.
