Regarding grafician's post about late 80's Batman...

I was so stoked for this movie.

My mother took myself and a few friends to the opening night showing. I remember all the hoopla.

Also, my father was already supporting my graphic impulses. I taped and glued together a huge bat logo using cardboard, folded it in half for symmetry, then cut it with a utility knife.

He would take me around different places to let me paint the outline of the logo. Literally supporting and funding preteen vandalism by letting me do low level street art graffiti.

Still not the best Batman, though.

Regarding imbecile post... My father was the BIG supporter of my graphic career, hope it leads to something he can be proud of.

He's not a man in arts, but strong in work discipline and ethics.

For years, my dad argued furiously for me to follow in his footsteps and be a tradesman. He hated his job but believed the trades were a safe salary. I followed my heart. My dad was disappointed in me for well over a decade. I was barely scraping by. It was rough.

Now, I make more than any of the tradesmen, most of whom are terrified of losing their job forever. Friends who took those jobs who now won’t take overtime pay and work through the weekend because they’re trying to be the last to get laid off.

Meanwhile, I earn more than them to sit in a designer chair and choose colors and fonts and push pixels around a screen. I’m eternally grateful for this.

My dad’s not a bad guy at all, he was only trying to protect me from failure, in his way.

I think he’s still disappointed in me because he doesn’t understand what I do or why it has value to my employer. That’s ok.

    • Unlike mono’s story, I was never concerned with my fathers approval. Not then, not now.nb
    • More like you, it’s more that I’m aware of it all now than it being an actual concern. It’s nice to have the approval even now when it doesn’t mean much.monospaced
    • It’s not like I was striving for approval or anything. It’s nice to have though. I hope your dad can get over his disappointment and start to understand. Cheersmonospaced
    • Yeah that’s cool. I think my dad is happy that I don’t ask him for money, but he wishes I was rich.nb

My dad didn’t show much interest in my career but he knew I would be okay I guess. He covered college — and I’m eternally grateful — but help stopped there. He said you’re on your own to pursue education and a career in design. So I did.

I feel like only in the last few years does he finally see and respect my work. Now that I have a family and house I can tell he is actually proud. It’s just weird because now I’m 40 and his approval isn’t really as important to me as it would have been 20 years ago. Here’s to 20 more years where we can become closer. Cheers dad!

    • I also lost a relationship because I pursued design. She didn’t believe I would be successful enough. Now I am and I wish she could see me now.monospaced
    • My dad was the same, save for covering any of my education. They come around when it’s tangible for them, I really hope I’m not like him in that regard though.ben_

In all my years cooking I’ve never made garlic bread with cheese.

    Until tonight.

And I blew it. It tastes like shit. Not sure how I screwed it up exactly, but I’m afraid to google because I’m sure whatever mistake I made was so boneheaded that I’ll just want to punch myself in the face.

Another dull Nairn Blog post ahoy. Skip!:

    .

Just had a large, heavy and expensive order picked up to be delivered to client, 17 minutes after the 1100–1700 pickup period, so i've spent the whole day slightly antagonised (on my own in my studio in an otherwise big building, so have to respond to every knock on the main outside door, etc etc) waiting for it to be picked up.

Very well packaged. Or, so I thought. I'm now unsure how much padding I put at the top, assuming (stupidly) it would always be relayed upright. Especially given I'd put notices on all sides, and made the CoG low, and put in a foam buffer in the base, to encourage appropriate carriage.

First thing I see as the guy takes it out to the van is him hoist it onto his shoulder, topside at 90°. I raise my finger and quietly murmur "uhh...." before I realise my package's fate is now beyond my scope.

I hope I packed that thing well.

    • 'heavy' = 29kg.

Motherfucker just hoyed it up there and walked out.

I was so stressed when I lost my job earlier this year due to Covid, but with intense persistence I had two offers within six weeks.

Now, a few months later, I'm getting a few unsolicited direct messages coming in from hiring teams at other agencies.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Spend a few dedicated weeks on making your portfolio and your LinkedIn better than everyone else's you've seen and things come your way.

If you're struggling out there, I feel you. Keep looking. When you get discouraged, just keeping going. When you've absolutely had it and have to scream: shut your computer down, lock up your phone, take a walk, have a beer in the tub and go to bed. Get up tomorrow and start again, it's fine. You can do it.

To NB above – this is such good advice. I remember a similar situation i was in a while ago. I spent every hour hammering away at Squarespace making a new site, and meeting with people, taking calls and getting my contacts out there.

The main thing for me was that the amount of time and energy i spent on my keynote portfolio and site gave me some element of control, as I'd retrained myself to treat it like a regular project and devote the same amount of energy and urgency to it – and that staved off the anxiety.

Good luck to everyone out there.
