    brushed by a fern

started a chain reaction on the windowsill

a plant fell from the other end

    the structural integrity

    of this impromptu terrarium

    erected by girlfriend

    would not be in question

it is, as she often states

the window that gets the light

she has no weed, and i have no fight

so i swoop, and catch it mid-air

but then the pain, the instant regret

it was a cactus, a jaggy bollock

    hand full of spines

theres one right up under my fingernail

    Whoa!

Did you know that Frank Zappa has released 116 albums?!

    • Yes. There are so many entry points to Zappa. Mine was Freak Out! But once I dug deeper, I am all about the Apostrophe/ Overnight Sensation era.DRIFTMONKEY

feeling so beat down lately.. kitchen renovation is almost done, but its been almost 8 weeks of non-stop working .. everything hurts..
granted we are near the finish line, but still.

my current issue is where to put the lighting for the disco ball I installed in the kitchen..

I had thought just on top of the cabinets, but its fucking with the clean aesthetic of the cabinetry ..

and yes, I put a 20inch disco ball in out kitchen.. and Phillips hue strips above the benches.. so when I tell Siri its disco time, lights turn off, disco starts and the benches go red.

Are you friendly with your local pizza place or taco shop?

There's a burrito spot near me. I go every week or so. They know me, I always order the same thing.

But I never quite know what to talk to them about. I walk in, they say hello, I ask for "the usual" and leave.

I don't know their names or anything.

I go enough that it feels kinda awkward.

Do you chat more with your pizza guy?

    Let America Be America Again
    by Langston Hughes - 1902-1967

    Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
    Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home—
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."

    The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay—
Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
    The land that's mine—the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME—
    Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,
    America!

    O, yes,
    I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
    America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
    We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
    And make America again!

    • A poet like Langston Hughes
      and can't lose
      when I cruise
      out on the expressway.
      Leaving the bodega,
      I say SUAVE.

I know art is subjective and some processes can be interesting, but some artists' work is such bs.

It never ceases to amaze me how a gallery can post a pic of some ugly crayon drawing or "sculpture" made of trash and have people fawn over it.

I mean, look — I know LinkedIn is an absolute shit sandwich, but it really floors me, the number of posts in my feed of a political nature this year, since the start of Covid; whether it's about Covid itself, Trump/US elections, something else.

I was raised to never discuss three things in the workplace/polite company: sex, religion, and politics. Doing so only invites a world of shit.

    AAAUGH.

That was the most stressful 6 hours of work I've had in a LONG time.

Most of the stuff I do - if I fuck up, I can spend five minutes swearing at my incompetency, then stick some new material in and start again. I might lose some money and time, but whatever.

Jobs like the one I've just completed however, are the opposite - I have a set number of units - and, if I'm lucky, a spare or two - and I then have to get every one absolutely right.

Trick with this job was that there were some curveballs thrown in that I couldn't account for (someone else made the things I'm working on), and designs changed on the fly which in a way simplifed things, in a way made things more stressful.

The last two things that I did were particularly precarious, so I checked my assumptions, checked again, then went for it. Of course, the substance of the thing I was working on was different from the test medium. I'm guessing the guy who was in control of that bit got his message the wrong way around, so did the exact opposite of what I asked for in order 'to make it safe'. it did the opposite.

I was able to cludge a fix, but fucking hell.

Days like this make me think I'm not going to make it to 50.

About to pick up some freelance art director work from my old AD agency on top of my current UX/UI gig. I'm hoping working remote will allow me to juggle both without any scheduling conflicts.

The freelance gig is for a big auto brand that I loved doing back in the day but I'm a little nervous of double dipping. Product design moves at a glacial pace compared to retail advertising and I've been super bored lately working remote. I'm hoping this will rekindle the spark I've been yearning for as the pandemic drags on.
