My wife and I bought a house! Moving back to KC to be closer to family. I have mixed emotions about it, but know, at least for now, it's the right move.

I will definitely miss Brooklyn, our neighborhood, the park, and our friends – but all of our family is in Missouri.

When we first moved to Brooklyn, we were just a couple looking to see if we could make it in NYC - and I think we've been really successful at that test. Now that we have twin 3 year olds, we think the right move is to be closer to family so our kids can know them better. This move was especially underscored after some recent loss – we have no idea how much time we have with anyone, so we should take advantage while we can. New York isn't going anywhere.

Both my wife and I are keeping our NYC jobs and working remotely with regular monthly trips back, so it kind of feels like that's kind of a win-win; lower bills (reduced by over half), actually owning something instead of wasting it on rent, proximity to family (but far enough away that they can't "pop in"), plus the opportunity to stay connected to our close friends in NYC.

I think working full-time remote (at least for myself) will be unsustainable for the long term - I don't think I'll be happy and will feel more isolated, but for the short term it's really attractive. I will give it an honest try though.... But I also know I need to hedge my bets and start reaching out to local contacts/agencies. Anyone with their ear to the ground on Sr.AD and above positions (agency or in-house), hit me up!

....and KC folk - we should grab beers in Sept. My new house is 4 blocks from Bier Station.

Something must have been on my MacBook Pro near the trackpad when I closed it, and it's pushed into the screen and caused a 1.5mm hole in the screen. Not sure what, a piece of grit/salt/food? No idea, wasn't eating near it. I

It's to the right side, about 4cm from the edge, perhaps could live with it....

Any ideas on the repair costs?

It seems like the whole screen + top part of the laptop would need to be replace. Good one apple.

Dad's able to stand and walk a bit, so he should be home in a few days and need some physio. You know what he fell on? A gumball machine. Stumbled at the door to a pizza place, spun and fell backwards into a gumball machine. 12 fractures.

Working on this film with my director friend and were shooting on Hollywood Blvd, so we stage at this pub that he's cool with the guys there, but I am illegally parked right in front. Me and my camera assistant are chilling in front waiting, and I look and see this gorgeous young lady walking in our direction. We lock eyes for a bit and she smiles, and she walks into the pub. I see that she works there and is the front reception person.

Eventually she comes out and start talking to me, asking if I would like a drink, making small talk. When someone walks in she goes back and does her job, but comes right back out every time she has a spare moment, all smiles. This goes on for like a hour or so, and im starting to feel guilty. Im married and older, she was 23-25. But she's all smiles and has that look in her eyes, sharing shit with me, showing me her notebook where she's learning Italian, we watch movie trailer on her phone, etc.

I was a good boy. I didn't peruse it. Some years ago she would have been this weekend jump off. Ive had like 3 of these scenarios lately. Not sure how to approach shit like this anymore.

    Anyways...thats it.

I've been at my job for exactly 1.5 years, it's a well funded fintech startup, it's a good company except for my pay and now I've got another possible job offer with way better pay.

Do you typically tell your current employer you have another job offer? in hopes the give you raise or match the offer... I've never done this before, how would bring this up??

    • Yes, but expect them to NOT match. If they do, bonus. But be firm in knowing what your worth.DRIFTMONKEY

Does anyone remember what make / model of car from the 70's or early 80's had a kind of curved side from front to back, and had simulated wheels (might have even contained the spare) either on the side of the front or back, on both sides?

It was like a more modern, mass-market version of this. Real richy-rich style, grotesque in it's upper-crust Phillip Drummond-meets-Silver Spoons-meets Benson sensibilities and styling.

    • It might have been a Cadillac Seville, but it definitely had that curved fender style to it.mg33

I'm back from 5 weeks of commercial fishing in Alaska and back to work! (lol at "work" now, this isn't work, shiiieet!)

long story short (cause I need to work now) there were some 72 hour work days and I shot at a brown bear that was charging at me from only 4 meters away while alone working at 1:am, I'll elaborate later. FYI she's good (still alive) we seen her around the cabin with her cubs for the following few days till I flew out.

An app developer just swung by and the consensus from the developers was that our montserrat fonts (chosen long before I came on board) Regular and Semibold look too much alike.

    Subjective feedback, but ok.

I look into it and apparently soon after I received the font library from my boss, who's since left the company, Google updated the font, changing the weights and what not.

So now I've spent most of my day looking into it, having devs pointing fingers at me and the conclusion is to simply download the new font library, install it on whatever system the devs are using for the app, and uh, it will just change everything. I walk them through it with the caveat, "now, Google may have changed things such as character spacing, how long the characters are - their width - and text could render longer or shorter in our app. So now they're flustered as fuck, worried the new font will break shit.

If that's not bad enough, my boss is on my ass about the design system I've been tasked to put together in my spare time. Somehow, an update by Google to their font - that no one knew about - would have perpetuated automagically to our design system, and trickled down to the developers and updated the font in the app. My frustration has hit it's peak.

    • maybe updating your resume/portfolio will give you a boost of anti-frustration. Then you are ready to send it out when anything comes up that looks promising.capn_ron
