I had a chat with a woman whose kid goes to the same nursery, She's a designer, sometimes web front-end sorta person. She's in a rut and left her job, and is keen to spark up interest and learn new things.
Now, the tricky thing for me in such discussions is that I am clearly not a full-time designer or webnik any more. She only knows - sorta - what I do these days, which is neither of these things. That said, I probably read more on tech development than most people, even many of The Involved, so I have very Strong Opinions on certain matters.
She mentioned that she wished she was better at programming so that she could get involved more in Web3. My heart sank. I asked her what she meant by that and she gave me the usual vague hand-wavy nothingness, regurgitating relevant keywords.
As much as I tried to discourage her pessimism about not being involved, I could tell she didn't credit - at all - what I was trying to tell her.
How could I - who has not made gajillions from Crypto, indeed can't, and most certainly would not - know what the fuck I'm talking about when the greater media sphere is knicker-twist dampened by all the cash sloshing around?
And this is how hype is able to run amok, irrespective of underpinnings, relevant or otherwise.

I am putting together a major Mardi Gras parade in Sacramento, and we're trying to get LeVar Burton, Megan Rapinoe, and/or Greta Gerwig as our celebrity King/Queen. They're all native Sacramentans. We're using the parade as a way to lift up Sacramento art, music, and culture. Not trying to re-create New Orleans Mardi Gras.

My 18 year old son is going through some serious mental health challenges right now. He's such a great kid...but has quite severe OCD. Manifests itself with having to do certain routines...which if he doesn't do, or they're interrrupted, cause him extreme anxiety. He's kind of OK when he's out, at school or with friends...he can hide it. But at home, he has real struggles.
Has quite a lot of friends...but only one really close one who now has a girlfriend. So he spends a fair bit of time alone. Not many friends he can just call up and hang out with. He's a bit socially awkward...a bit like I am.
He's interested in a girl...and spent the day with her yesterdy. But late in the afternoon, I was going out with my wife and daughter...wife called him to see if he wanted to come. He was virtually incoherent on the phone...just mumbling. We picked him up from a local park and he was on the verge of tears. But he wouldn't let on what had happened. I felt so helpless.
Anyway, not sure why I'm writing this. He's just the best kid...doesn't have a mean bone in his body. Full of empathy. Not into material things. Loves music. He's just a bit lost and it kills me to watch him go through all this at such a young age.
