Last Sunday I walked into a funeral home to attend a wake for my oldest and dearest friend's mother-in-law. He texted me the details and I told him I'd see him there.
I head up to the funeral home about 30 minutes away, take a few deep breaths in the car as I generally don't like funeral homes, and walk in. The service is in progress and a woman is sharing a story to a pretty small group of people. I inconspicuously walk into the back of the room and start to look around and realize that I don't know anybody. I look at the open casket and confirm that I am in fact, in the wrong room. I've been in the room for all of about 30 seconds and walk out to see the owner so I ask if there's another service happening. "No, who are you here for?" he says. I tell him and he checks his schedule where he tells me that her service will be THIS Sunday. My bad.

    • oh no, I once spent at least 15 minutes in the wrong cremation ceremony, getting emotional at the service and then realised I didn't recognise anyone there.fadein11
    • I was 10 minutes early, got outside and everyone was waiting for the one I should have been in.fadein11

Looking to try some passive income with my illustrations. Should I focus on selling prints on etsy or selling digital art with nft?

Got offered an 8% raise for next year. Thanked my manager for getting me more than others got. (I deserve it, I’m underpaid.) Then I explained to my manager that 8% is still far below what others are paying.

Next week I have a meeting set up to negotiate a $50,000+ raise. I can’t imagine they’ll go for it. No chance. It’s an insane thing to ask for but the market is insane! I already have an offer for even more than I’m asking them. Wtf.

But in the end I guess they can just replace me with another designer who will accept what they’re offering. Because frankly I’m not even that good. Im very average and I’m replaceable.

Such a weird time for design right now, if you have the right kind of experience.

Get that bread, people! Get that bread!

    • I say this not to brag but to let you know that if you’re not looking for a raise (in the US in product, UI or UX design) you need to look around at the market!

    • 50k+ sounds like you're really underpaid or your self-confidence is high.I doubt the latter. Go for that offer, and don't look at yourself as furniture.sted
    • Im paid reasonable. It’s more that certain tech companies are paying double and even triple what others are for the same role. The market is all over the place
      ********
    • Look at Netflix salaries, they’re paying the top design leaders 300k+. Amazon is paying Product Managers over 400k. Few companies can compete.
      ********
    • That's 3.67k/hour at Netflux.
I think I'm in the wrong dimension or something.
      sted
    • i looked, those are senior pm positions with 150-160k base +stock and bonus. you can forget those without 5-10y experience, and proper education.sted
    • only UI production related experience won't be enough to make it to the first round.sted
    • Netflix is the goat, sure. But plenty of product design, UI and UX jobs are paying 200k+ per year (if you have 5 to 10 years experience)
      ********
    • @sted I think it’s your math that’s in the wrong dimension lol. Unless you plan to work 81 hours per year?
      ********
    • Don’t even apply to Netflix unless you’re a superstar. I’m just using them as an example. There are tons of tech companies hiring lead designers in the USA

After a couple of hours of researching 'best' methods, I made some play-dough with my daughter last night. It came out well - a nice consistency with bright colour vibrancy across a nice spectrum of colours (need to work on white), very good for moulding and general play.

I'd read that if you want to keep a piece, you can just bake it, so I put the oven on and put a few pieces we'd made on a sheet of baking paper to cook / sterilise / harden for a few minutes.

I must've used too much glycerine and/or oil, because when I checked a few minutes later, all the silly google-eyed weird creatures we'd made had melted into an obscene coagulated hellscape.

I should've taken photos. I'm bad at not taking photos. Or, rather, fucking great at not taking photos. Bad at taking photos. Terrible, in fact.

fuck so worked.. went to Melbourne for a short getaway.. was meant to be Friday night to Monday afternoon.

boss tells me he booked me for a job Monday (even tho he never confirmed) so I had to fly back early leave wife and kids there.

7:15am flight need to wake up at 5am to get there on time..

12:50am I get a call from Jetstar telling they have cancelled my flight. as the text woke me up, I was able to rebook on the 6:10am flight.. which meant leaving at 4:30am..

book uber for pickup and get 3 hours of very broken sleep..

4:30 comes, no uber, check app, no uber, refresh at, all of a sudden booking vanished only to be replaced with options that were literally double the price..

get to airport, they try and tell me I requested a refund and not a rebook, even though I took a screenshot after I rebooked..

20 minutes of back and fourth, finally they get me on the flight..

    like seriously.

who the fuck cancels at 7am flight at 1am ..

    cunts.. that's who.

obviously Jetstar is basically garbage anyway, but still.. new levels of fuckery

anyway, here I am, warmed up dog vomit trying to keep my eyes open long enough

2021 has been my worst fiscal year since 1998. Basically due to the pandemic.

I awed and sighed when a QBN member spoke about a 50k raise. It feels so far from what I make.

And today I received an email that I won the lottery. And it was not one of those shitty spammers. I seriously won 5k. Wow. What a relief after my financial struggles this year.

    Cheers!

I wonder why Google still persist with sectioned pages of results. As in clicking to page 2, 3 etc. In todays scrolling mindset, surely more people will prefer to keep scrolling and see the results from 10-50 rather than giving up on page 1. I'm sure there is an amazing reason I'm not thinking of.

    • less people scroll, more people will only see first 2 pages. that means first 2 pages becomes even more valuable. i thinkpango

Is it some Youth Thing to not explain anything in emails, or am I just getting old, or am I just having a perfectly-explainable statistically-possible increase in enquiries from people who seem to assume I'm psychic?

I've had quite a few enquiries recently where the people simply don't pad out an explanation with anything useful, and thereafter it's like trying to draw blood from a stone to work out WTF it is they want.

I've been doing this shit for a while now, so I'm quite good at second-guessing poorly-described intent, but it's impossible when they don't give any hints at all.

It's taking a lot of effort for me to not respond with an email slap.

From a (once in a lifetime) Facebook post to friends, families & loved ones:

Vaccinated our 7 year old son yesterday.

Feels like a strange, dystopian future as he now has a vaccine passport, BUT much like George from Seinfeld, I understand that "...we're living in a society" and it comes at a price.

That price is sometimes you have to follow the herd and do what everyone else does.

As a manic maniac, that's hard for me to do, BUT I understand that I have to do my part for myself and my family and it's often hard.
Please, consider empathy, selflessness and similar things as we move forward into an unknown future where all I want is the best possible outcome for you and me.

I hope you feel the same.

Tired of this shit BUT obviously don’t think I can convince folks to change their minds.

    What was that website...

Their gist was they provide a lifestyle full of products for an annual fee and all of it had this very industrial, black-steel-and-cement kind of aesthetic to it. Part of the package was a cybertruck-lookin’ trailer to carry it all in and they had a mission statement that was some kind of wankery about living a minimal lifestyle or something...?
