I know many of you can't point Belarus on the map. There is a revolution happening there right now. I was glued to my screen all day, following the near live broadcast on Telegram https://t.me/nexta_live Considering internet is blocked.
The majority of my dev team is in Belarus. They are on the streets now, defending their freedom.

Approximately 1.35 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,700 people lose their lives every day on the roads. An additional 20-50 million suffer non-fatal injuries, often resulting in long-term disabilities.

What is it with the conceited arrogance of Eastern European males?

I have a Russian client who I get on quite well with, but we happened in conversation upon a topic I happen to know a bit about and he was absolutely steadfastly assuring me of a point of position that I knew to be entirely incorrect. He's a client so I didn't argue it, especially as it wasn't particularly important, but it did make me think back to other ex-Eastern Bloc types I've met over the years and make me wonder what exactly it is in the water over there that gives such a flavour of conviction. It's a bit amusing.

    • I noticed the same thing when I lived in Serbia, years back. They are also big on conspiracy theories there.Continuity
    • Having said that, few people I know can find Belarus (unassisted) on a map, and I would have to take an educated stab at it, if I'm honest.Continuity

    Monday on steroids.

I believe I've posted a bit about my dog before. He's Leo, he's the homie.

Normally I wake up in the morning and he follows me while I do my routine, watches me brush my teeth, waits by the door when I shower, etc. He's my shadow around the apt, then we go for a walk.

This morning I wake up to my girlfriend screaming because her bulldog is trying to kill my dog over a piece of kibble. They have scuffles, but this was out of the ordinary. An example of how they usually chill:

It's pretty clear that at best she broke his leg, there was a good bit of blood as well.

So I'm trying to get ready as fast as I could while we get in touch with an emergency vet, and the motherfucker was still trying to be my shadow even though he could barely walk. I'm on the verge of tears because he would not stop and was falling over and whimpering. I had to bundle him up in a blanket to get him to stop, then carry him out to a post and hold his leg up to pee. Put him in the car, drive to the vet, no parking, had to carry him for several blocks while people are giving me sad looks because it looked like I was hoisting him to his final destination.

Worst Covid Experience ever: Handing your wounded dog to a vet at the door. I've been waiting all day to hear back from them.

Also the power went out while I was typing this. My roommate says he heard a crash, and I hear sirens. So yeah, FUCK YOU MONDAY.

    • damn. hope you can get them to be friends again... bulldogs, staffies etc do have a violent streak deep in their character.inteliboy

Years ago (around the holidays) i found a 2’ potted xmas tree on the freeway that had fallen off a truck. I pulled over, took it home, and planted it in my yard.

Now the fucking thing is 30 feet tall and has taken over my yard. It contributes nothing. It doesn’t bear fruit or even really provide shade because you can’t walk under it. First of all, thanks for the kind words. Leo is home, safe and sound.

Without getting too into it, I have a long background in medical publishing, so I've picked up a few things along the way. I also camp pretty hard, so I have a dog-specific med kit in case something goes awry while we're in the middle of nowhere. This combination leads to me being the worst airmchair doctor ever.

I went into auto mode, disinfected the bite area, stopped the bleeding, did a superglue stitch job, cleaned the blood off his fur, then got on the phone with the vet. Then I woke up. Rest of the story is already in there.

So here's the rest of the madness: He'd been at the vet for half the day, and they finally call back. "He's not letting us touch his feet, but given his age this is problably a shoulder problem, or maybe bone cancer."

In the most "look I'm not telling you how to do your job, but.." manner I told them to shave the inside of his front left leg they will find a laceration and puncture wounds. They did, and were all "oh yeah, we see it now, probably a tendon injury".

Adding to this is the madness of dealing with this during quarantine. We had to stand socially distanced on the sidewalk with 5 or 6 other groups that were waiting for their pets. There was a couple with a cute French Bulldog named Caesar. Caesar took a shit on the sidewalk, so we distanced a little bit further.

He's on antibiotics and painkillers, will have a comprehensive re-examination on Monday. As for Molly, the first thing Leo did when he got home was try to play-fight with her. It seems the biggest problem will be to try to keep him from over-exerting himself.

So there's a bunch of words and blurry photos. Thanks again, it's been a rough couple of days.
