Not a design question... but...
Anyone here recently become a vegetarian? Any words of wisdom, especially on how to more smoothly weather the guts changes.... i.e. last time I went veggie for a month, my belly was not happy for a few weeks, and I contributed to global methane production a bit too much....
Thanks!

Been veggie since 99 so I haven't the foggiest. Just do it? Start by slowly removing meat?

fucking hippy.
just kidding, i was vegetarian for about 10 years. the key is to make sure you switch up your proteins and veggies (otherwise it get's boring) and invest in a few highly-rated vegetarian cookbooks on amazon. tons of great stuff out there. one that i have that i would recommend is

Don't mean to hijack your thread but if you're looking to improve your diet ever hear of paleo or non- gluten?

I started doing paleo about two months ago after being diagnosed with an ulcer. Never felt healthier, with more energy and effortlessly lost 15 pounds. Now I'm trying to gain some muscle weight so increasing calories. We spent a great time of our evolving as hunter gathers, we are omnivores. Either way, cutting out all processed foods will make you much healthier and much more able to recover from injury or illness.

i've been vegetarian for around 18 years. the "OMG YOU NEED HUGE AMOUNTS OF PROTEIN" thing is largely bullshit so there's not a whole lot to worry about. eggs are a great source, try eating quinoa where you would normally eat rice, and take full advantage of that fake meat section of your supermarket. there's a lot of tasty meat substitutes... sausages, ground "beef", chili, chicken and garden patties... it's all pretty decent as long as you aren't expecting it to be identical to the dead animal version.
you can literally just swap your meat with substitutes and never really have to change anything if the idea of not having a carcass on your plate sounds really difficult or scary or something...
- eggs count?pango
- some vegetarians eat eggs and dairy, yeahscarabin
- vegans avoid all animal products, vegetarians mostly just the fleshscarabin
- soooo logical...monospaced
- it has to do with the killing of animals for people. for me i just find the idea of meat grossscarabin
- as do I. It is the killing part that I don't like.formed
- You don't like meat but but you like meat substitutes?spmitch

it's not like quitting cigarettes, just eat shit without animals in it
- except for dairy, eggs, gelatin and on and on and on...monospaced
- that's vegan, not vegetarianscarabin
- I'm clear on the distinction, but if you're vegetarian, why make concessions for animal products?monospaced
- people have different reasons for being vegetarianscarabin
- if my doctor says i only have to cut out meat and pork, why would i cut out eggs? if i avoid meat because of cruelty, why would i not eat eggs from my pet chicken or cow?scarabin
- would i not eat eggs from my pet chicken or cow?scarabin
- if i find the idea of eating meat gross, why would i cut out jelly beans when gelatin doesn't bother me?scarabin
- you know I'm just playing devil's advocate right? I really enjoy your viewpoint, scarabinmonospaced
- you'd also be surprised to know I probably eat vegetarian more than 50% of the timemonospaced
- it's cool, i like arguing :)scarabin
- I like to call it "discussing"monospaced
- I just find this whole thing like the Bible. People take the part they like, ignore the rest, but still call themselves devout.monospaced
- i can see that... i honestly wish i could enjoy some meat-based dishes, it's just a mind thing for me. cheese and eggs are far enough removed i can stomach them but i just think about veins and shit whenever i try meat and it makes me gagscarabin

what are your reasons for wanting to be veggie?
I was fully 15 years, started eating some fish and now I'm eating meat about once a month. My reasons have nothing to do with my veggie diet being lacking (i think i'm just getting lazy)
maybe you could do the reverse of me i.e. introduce more vegetarian meals and gradually increase the wedge.
if you get good at cooking and it works out for you there'll be no regrets

surprised nobody has posted a picture of a steak yet.

...this has been useful, thanks! especially the slower-going way, and few of the links.... I've been a bit Paleo at times, I liked it but I had some heartburn a few times, probalby some unknown food allergy/sensitivity....
Strangely, I don't really like meat substitutes, I'd rather eat really veggie-oriented food, rather than attempts to be meat-like....
- vaxorcist0
no... doctor's warning, as I've got a heart condition, one grandfather had a heart attack, and other one had diabetes, strangely they both lived to 89 .... but I'd rather not be fat and stressed on all the meds they were on....
- Sadly most doctors don't know shit about nutrition. There are some out there, but you have to do your research.IRNlun6

Indian cuisine has some of the best vegetarian options I've ever eaten. Most of the time they are better than their meat offerings.

I'm a pescatarian (don't eat meat, but still eat fish). I've been so for about a year and a half now. First off- fuck those meat substitutes. So gross tasting. I've been eating a lot of fruits/veggies. My pantry has a lot of jasmine rice/brown rice, whole wheat pasta, lentils, black beans, couscous, quinoa. Of course eggs are a staple in my diet. And a ton of spices. I make a lot of curries, bake pizzas, stir fry, etc. I'm fairly athletic so I supplement a little bit of whey protein every day.
I thought I'd start eating meat again but the one thing I've noticed is I eat so much healthier. And my favorite part is it's a lot cheaper to not eat meat. Not that I ate too a lot of fast food, but I never eat it now. Also, I've taken up cooking and fallen in love with it and not eating meat makes recipes and food preparation easier and quicker.

^my favorite recipe- easy to make and kills the random meat cravings I get from time to time. very filling, cheap, and impresses the pants off of the ladies. I'll make burger patties with this recipe and in addition I'll throw a thin patty on an egg sandwich, or scramble it into a burrito. It's been my go to meat substitute.- i'm gonna try that this weekend, thanks :)scarabin
- they are awesome, everyone (meat and nonmeat eater alike) loves themfourth
- I usually substitute the pepper with shredded carrotsfourth
- oh and usually cook them for about 5 minutes per side on cast iron. make the patties thin, they are fillingfourth
- cool. i've got a shit ton of carrots from my CSA box right now tooscarabin
- made these, they're good!scarabin

a good veggie burger can be better than a real burger as long as you don't expect it to be a true replacement
- I've learned to never expect a something to replicate meat. I stay away from all substitutesfourth
- sureshot0
- but most of the time I eat rice with chicken breast.sureshot
- or a couscous salade. that shits tasty as fuck.sureshot
- no disrespect but i'm positively certain you can live a complete and fulfilling life without another steakscarabin
- it's totally cool if you choose to eat steak but people sound like meth addicts when they talk about meatscarabin
- ^ and many other things they'd be better off not having at all.CyBrainX

I always found it strange how whenever I'm at a restaurant and order something with no meat on it, the question 'Are you vegetarian?' comes up. For the majority of people its unusual to think that a person can enjoy a vegetarian dish one day, and do a face plant on a steak the next day. You are either a carnivore or a vegetarian and there is no in between.
Why is that? is it that strange to just enjoy food? (and no I don't mean in the pretentious 'foodie' way, but just like food like everyone else...)
Then there are the 'eating right nazis' populating facebook on why you shouldn't eat this or that, but always forget about the cardio/ active life part.
I don't eat red meat that often, but I enjoy it every now and then. I could not quit eating fish though.

ss - great help and contribution to the thread there
Just mix it up. There are so many things you can easily make, from Tofu (I sautee cubes in olive oil, with soy sauce and brewer's yeast - the yeast adds a wonderful flavor), add veggies, etc.
Veggie burgers are great, too, but don't get the ones that fake the hamburger flavor. My favorites are Amy's California burgers (TONS of flavors).Try different recipes. Meat has nothing to do with a dish being good, its just more common that great restaurants serve meat (though that's changing).
Protein - as noted above, the "where do you get your protein from?" is bullshit. A few nuts a day and you'd be fine. Society is mostly asleep at the wheel!
