    sureshot,

I used to love me a nice bloody steak. A few months ago I tried a strip of steak that my friend had. I always thought after one bite I'd be back to eating meat but it did nothing for me. And it was a good steak. It was weird–it just tasted really dense and that was it.

I have a friend here at work, that skipped Vegetarian and went full vegan overnight. She lost 20 lbs in a month.

I have nothing against vegetarians, I know some that are extremely healthy and super strong, but those boxed and canned foods are for the most part terrible. Read the labels. Many are full of sodium, chemicals and preservatives which is why they have a shelf life of more than a week. Pretty much anything in a can is lined with BPA which seeps into the food.

Fair enough, you don't like the idea of flesh or killing animals but do yourselves a favor and take that same attitude with putting shit chemicals in your bodies. It's not easy, especially with our food industry, but it is possible.

    • i don't see how this is limited to vegetarian foodscarabin
    • I implied that but you're right, not at all limited to vegetarians.IRNlun6
    • I used to know lots of "french fry vegetarians" but junk food is junk food.... we all know that.vaxorcist
    • have you considered the sodium, anti-biotics, saturated fat etc. in meat?lowimpakt
    • Yes, only free range, grass fed for me. Also try to get as much wild game as possible but thats tough.IRNlun6

whatever.... for me, it's not about anything ethical...
and I don't like all that processed fake-meat anyway, and yuppie-vegan-junkfood is out for me....

if it's going to make my long-term health that much better, I can eat raw Kale everyday.....

I'm vegetarian and I don't eat canned food at all.
I also don't eat just grass like some people like to say.
I also don't take any supplements or whatever you call it in english.
Maybe i have a lack of something, who knows?

I don't care what's your diet, to put it like this, but most of carnivores are just ignorant and base their discussion over stereotypes when it comes to talk about vegetarianism and try often to makes us feel ridiculous...or childish.

For some people it's hard to think I guess. Maybe harder than being vegetarian and having a balanced diet.

    Who cares?

Go vegetarian for life, for a month, for a year...
Try it, but find a proper reason for it.
    And ask yourself why.
Are you prepared to quit sausages, bacon and all that shit for life?
It's a fucking commitment, and after some time you won't even notice or think about flesh and whatever.
Do it, be a man or whatever you are.

Don't support PeTA, they are assholes and assassins!

    • I know many vegetarians that eat like shit are a really unhealthy. Obviously not all of them are and it works both ways.IRNlun6
    • ...ways. The way you eat is your choice and there's never a shortage of ignorant people basing their decisions on stereotypes.IRNlun6

i have been vegetarian for 18 years now..

to be honest tho, after the first few weeks, it was just easy.

it really depends on your motivation.

if you see it as a challenge, then your reasons are likely not going to be as solid.

its not like quitting drinking or smoking crack.. its just meat.. its not addictive. what is a pain is realizing that a bunch of things you used to like eating, have no direct substitute. for me, pepperoni pizza was a big thing.. but then i learned more about different chilli's and peppers ..

but yep, i know the biggest issue most people have when they switch is they have this mindset against certain things.. like "i cant stand tofu" or "fake meat, why would i bother?"

first off.. tofu is awesome.. but to be honest, Silken Tofu sucks balls, which is what i knew tofu as until i bothered to look deeper..

and fake meat.. why bother? because food shouldnt always be a massive production.. sometimes i just want a simple sandwich, a few slices of tomato, lettuce and a slice of fake sandwich meat.. voila.

    • so you're autoflavour because you eat you're own sausage? sorry had to ask this for fun.oey
    • seriously, you are totally correct.oey
    • and big up for your 18 years. respect.oey
    • Good work. Silken tofu is fantastic if it's cooked right... and where have your mixes gone Auto?MrT
    • yeah, saying all Silken tofu is bad is probably a bit much.. I love salt and pepper tofu, which is silken deepfriedautoflavour
    • not necessarily the healthiest option there i guess.. i think its just the texture that puts me offautoflavour
    • as for mixes.. i was working on one last year, but then i got side tracked working on film clips all year..autoflavour
    • excuses excuses i know..autoflavour
    • in germany they have like this smoked tofu in different types. natural, peppered, almonds, etc...very tasty!oey
    • in portugal, it's easier to find vegan chorizo and blood sausage than here in Amsterdam.oey
    • but it's a bit too much for me. vegan imitations of meat stuff. the only thing i really like are veggie burgers. that's it.oey
    • i guess thats the thing.. i still like burgers, hot dogs etc.. just with vege stuff.. but its usually more expensiveautoflavour
    • especially to eat regularly..autoflavour

also something i realized after becoming vegetarian was most of the things i ate with meat, it wasnt the meat i was eating it for..

    it was the flavors..

tandoori chicken.. it doesnt matter if its chicken or tofu.. it still tastes like tandoori..

same with a bunch of things.

and before you carnivores start foaming at the mouth about how tofu doesnt taste anything like meat.. dont bother.
i know that .. its tofu.. not meat.

meat tastes like flesh.. tofu tastes like.. well.. tofu.

    i dont know..

before i was vegetarian i knew a small part of the food chain, the things i chose when i ate out where pretty narrow and there were a hell of a lot of things i would never had tried. this was partly due to my upbringing and the choices my parents made regarding food (meat and 3 veg nuclear family)

but becoming vegetarian i discovered a very large section of food i had never even considered before.. and that was because all of a sudden, the things i relied on the most as food, were not available anymore.

Eggplant, artichokes, Zucchini, Chickpeas, Lentils.. fuck.. Indian food, Thai Food, Japanese food (although i have to admit, Japanese is pretty restrictive for vegetarians)

I am generally pretty unhealthy .. i am overweight and i eat way too much pizza and crap to be considered a healthy vegetarian.. but i am a vegetarian. i dont eat meat. i dont eat fish. hell, i dont even eat yogurt..

    • i meant to say that i discovered Eggplant, artichokes etc etcautoflavour
    • no fish, no meat, no yogurt, no milk, barely cheese and sometimes eggs.oey
    • taht's why vegetarian sausages in glass bottles with that jelly really taste like meat sausages. i fucking hate it. disgusting.oey
    • yep, anything in jelly = failautoflavour
    • sounds like you are pretty much vegan tho..autoflavour
    • i have considered going vegan.. but so many of the things i eat everyday would goautoflavour
    • i don't eat meat for almost 16 years., i didn't ate fish the first two years. then i started to eat fish again until i stopped 6...oey
    • ...months ago. still i rarely ate fish. like twice a month and only in portugal, from my parents neighbor'. traditional fishing.oey
    • but milk i don't drink. no yogurts. for years. i try to avoid to the max cheese and eggs.oey
    • but i eat cookies and pizza, and other stuff made with milk and eggs. i eat honey too.oey
    • i'm not vegan but if there's a vegan menu i prefer to eat that. i don't eat jellies unless they're vegan. and cheese, not all...oey
    • ...cheese is vegetarian. so if i buy cheese it has to be vegetarian. here in netherlands most cheese has rennet...oey
    • eggs, i never liked to buy in the supermarket. i do it reluctantly. my parents have chickens have running free back home. just...oey
    • ...for the eggs nowadays. well, they eat meat so once in a while there goes a chicken. but they have them mostly for the eggs.oey
    • they use to have a pig, rabbits, sometimes ducks or doves. and i had to help with the thing. lost my stomach. so i stopped.oey
    • all the time i ate fish i didn't made any apology for people be vegetarian. but i always thought that was the way. i always admired people who could do it. specially vegans.oey
    • also in restaurants, even when i was eating fish i would go mostly for vegetarian dishes. i've got friends who don't evenoey
    • wear wool...oey

as cliché as it sounds, it was a mixture of reading Moby's liner notes from Everything is Wrong, and the first few chapters from a Krishna cookbook which made me switch..

mind you, i get nothing but a constant dismissive tone from all of my wifes family, who are German, about me not eating meat.

at first it was a novelty, then after a few years, it became a hassle for them to have to "deal" with my needs at meal time, even though i constantly insisted i would rather cook for myself..

but then that was an issue as they wouldnt let me near the kitchen until they had finished cooking, then it was an issue that we all didnt eat together because I had decided to be the odd one out.

now we have a kid, every time we are there, they are constantly badgering my wife about why our son should miss out eating meat blah blah blah.

and to be honest, when he is old enough to cook for himself, or at least understand a menu well enough to pick something, he can eat what he wants.. but i am not going to cook 2 seperate meals just so he can eat meat, while my wife and I dont.

I am not forcing vegetarianism on him.. when he is old enough, i will explain it all.. and if he wants to eat meat, then he can.. but i am not going to cook or buy it for him.. why would i, i am a vegetarian..

but if he goes to a friends house and they have it.. and he wants to eat it.. then i have no problem with it. but i want him to be old enough to understand where the meat comes from..

and not that its just some magical substance that you find at a supermarket

    just do it..
    going vegetarian isnt that hard.

if this thread was about vegan or raw, then yep..

but you just replace meat with other non meat based food.

    it isnt hard
