Apple on Wednesday agreed to pay $113 million to settle consumer fraud lawsuits brought by more than 30 states over allegations that it secretly slowed down old iPhones, a controversy that became known as "batterygate."

Apple first denied that it purposely slowed down iPhone batteries, then said it did so to preserve battery life amid widespread reports of iPhones unexpectedly turning off. The company maintained that it wasn't necessary for iPhone users to replace their sluggish phones, but state attorneys general led by Arizona found people saw no other choice.

Apple, the most valuable company in the world, acted deceptively by hiding the shutdown and slowdown issues, according to the court filing.

"Many consumers decided that the only way to get improved performance was to purchase a newer-model iPhone from Apple," Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich wrote in a complaint made public on Wednesday. "Apple, of course, fully understood such effects on sales."

According to state investigators, the move boosted iPhone sales "potentially by millions of devices per year."

The slowdown reportedly affected Apple phones that were released between 2014 and 2016. It first came to light after iPhone users complained on Reddit and technology blogs.

Foldable Apple iPhone Coming In 2022: Report

Rumors of Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) introducing a foldable iPhone have been in the air for some time now. A recent report from the Chinese news site Economic Daily News suggests the idea is coming closer to reality.

What Happened: Apple is seriously pursuing its foldable phone ambitions and has begun testing the product at its assembly partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.-ADR (OTC:HNHPF), known as Foxconn, the report said.

Cupertino is reportedly evaluating the use of OLED or micro OLED tech for a foldable iPhone screen, as assembling methods for these two types of screens are very different.

Apple is testing several key components of a foldable iPhone such as the screen and bearings in a bid to expeditiously bring the product to the market, the report said.

The foldable iPhone could be in for a September 2022 launch, according to the Economic Daily News.

Samsung would supply the panel for the screen, and bearings are likely to be supplied by Taiwanese companies, including New Nikko, according to the report.

Related Link: Why iPhone 12 Will Be Another 'Defining Chapter' In Apple's Growth Story

Apple leaker Jon Prosser had revealed in a tweet in June that Apple's foldable phone has two separate display panels on a hinge, unlike Samsung's Galaxy Fold, which has a single display.

    Apple's "foldable" iPhone isn't really a foldable.

The current prototype has two separate display panels on a hinge.

Round, stainless steel edges like current iPhone 11 design.

No notch — tiny forehead on outter display that houses Face ID.
    — Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) June 15, 2020

Why It's Important: Any Apple product launch brings hyped-up expectations. Apple will fall into the role of follower rather than an innovator at least with respect to foldable phones.

It remains to be seen how much of Apple's touch the company can add to the product to differentiate it from the foldable phones already available on the market.

AAPL Price Action: At last check, Apple shares were trading down 0.15% at$119.21.

Apple's implementation of Thunderbolt on the current M1s is actually pretty scuffed. I didn't realise how much of 'Thunderbolt' is specific to the implementation of intel hardware. Turns out 'Thunderbolt support' means very little in guaranteeing it's speed advantages over USB - for example: Apple make a decision to integrate graphics in to the chip because it'll make M1s look good in benchmarks = no GPU accelerators will ever work with the current batch of M1s.

In a similar way other TB hardware may be 'fully compatible' but loose any speed advantage over USB due to reliance on intel specific instructions (this may be the case with low-latency audio/ DSP over TB). Also haven't seen much mention that the Apple thunderbolt controller can only run a single external monitor - vs 4 on the intel MBP!?

Saying that, there are redesigned MBPs expected next year, I just bought a 16" intel but I'll probably jump on second revision of redesigned apple chip MBPs (mid 2022?) - While the speed of the M1 is impressive, there's a lot more to consider...

    • I was wondering about this. I figured Apple would sort it out, but it makes sense that there's issues. Maybe best to wait for USB4 Macs.section_014
    • It's TB, but I believe it's also USB C and will give good bandwidth as a result. What's a GPU accelerator?monospaced
    • Also, my understanding all 3 of the M1 machines can easily support 3 external displays, and I believe at beyond 5K resolution as well.monospaced

After using Big Sur for a few days, I'm really liking the new UI design. I like how it's moving in the direction of iOS/iPadOS but also brings to mind the simplicity of early days of Mac. Also the new sound effects are hilarious.

My 2014 MacBook Pro had nasty key and trackpad outlines etched in to the antiglare coating on the screen glass - it wasn't visible in use until a couple of years ago (and I missed the 4 year Apple replacement scheme) but now it's noticeable all the time and pretty distracting when working on a white background.

I have a new 16" on the way but in order to keep it tidy for work i'm going to try and get at least a couple more years out of this one as a rehearsal room/ live recording rig (i remember gigs)... so I figured I'd try and do a bit of a refurb myself and replaced the battery, rubber feet and charger this week, unfortunately the only way to replace the glass is to replace the whole screen assembly (costing about 300 noop) so that's not really an option. While searching for solutions I found a few people saying that the anti-glare coating could be removed entirely by using Listerine and a microfibre cloth, so fuck it, I thought i'll give it a go...

I have been a windows guy all my life. I build my own PCs. I have used Macs from work so I am familiar with them and respect them but have always been allergic to the sales bullshit and overpricing and the cult of followers that blindly follow them. I could always build a PC myself that is as fast as whatever mac machine is out there for half the cost.

But this is different, because it is like going down to the core layer of how shit gets done on a computer and rethinking it.

At first I was like: 8GB of ram? this is a toy

But they build RAM onto the CPU and the way the code is written, they don't need as much........and so on. Read these posts and watch the video NBQ00 posted. A lot of good info there.

It's about time, really. The intel model has dominated for too long. Now we know what Apple is spending a lot of their R&D on - reinventing the computer from the bottom up - and not just building shiny expensive phones.

This sums it up well from @dhh on twitter:

"I pray that Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm is letting the M1 give them ideas, take them in new directions. Because this level of sorcery is too damn powerful to be held by a single company. Especially a monopolizing conglomerate like Apple. But fucking kudos to those chip wizards"

    • Competition is good for the consumer. There's room now for companies we've never heard of to step up, too.formed
