I have been a windows guy all my life. I build my own PCs. I have used Macs from work so I am familiar with them and respect them but have always been allergic to the sales bullshit and overpricing and the cult of followers that blindly follow them. I could always build a PC myself that is as fast as whatever mac machine is out there for half the cost.

But this is different, because it is like going down to the core layer of how shit gets done on a computer and rethinking it.

At first I was like: 8GB of ram? this is a toy

But they build RAM onto the CPU and the way the code is written, they don't need as much........and so on. Read these posts and watch the video NBQ00 posted. A lot of good info there.

It's about time, really. The intel model has dominated for too long. Now we know what Apple is spending a lot of their R&D on - reinventing the computer from the bottom up - and not just building shiny expensive phones.

This sums it up well from @dhh on twitter:

"I pray that Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm is letting the M1 give them ideas, take them in new directions. Because this level of sorcery is too damn powerful to be held by a single company. Especially a monopolizing conglomerate like Apple. But fucking kudos to those chip wizards"

    • Competition is good for the consumer. There's room now for companies we've never heard of to step up, too.formed
    • Intel fell asleep at the wheel and will die if they don't have something at least on par very, very soon.formed
    • Too powerful. Sorcery?!
It’s ARM architecture. Not new. And in the lowest end of the lowest market share computer on the planet.

    • Next thing you know the derpy dumb haterz will say Apple killed intel or some stupid ass shit. Look, it’s a niche machine and a niche company.monospaced
    • I agree. If the competition wants to be relevant they will respond. But it will be THEIR fault if they can’t step up.monospaced
    • Just like adobe didn’t step up to make flash a decent mobile experience. Ha.monospaced
    • Apple is just a company. A really big one. They are not better or worse than anyone else. They make some good R&D decisions. Good for themdkoblesky
    • Exactly. Saying they are too powerful is kinda funny. Because they really aren’t. They aren’t really winning except in profit.monospaced
    • I agree with everything you’re saying pretty much. I can’t wait to see where we go with this next gen approach and competition.monospaced
    • @mono wait till 2022 to even consider an upgradegrafician
    • Yes if competition doesn't step up it'll be their fault. :/i_was
    • Once they stop supporting intel, hackintoshes will be gone in a few yearsscarabin
    • I’m sure there will be an M1 hack somehow.monospaced
