My 2014 MacBook Pro had nasty key and trackpad outlines etched in to the antiglare coating on the screen glass - it wasn't visible in use until a couple of years ago (and I missed the 4 year Apple replacement scheme) but now it's noticeable all the time and pretty distracting when working on a white background.

I have a new 16" on the way but in order to keep it tidy for work i'm going to try and get at least a couple more years out of this one as a rehearsal room/ live recording rig (i remember gigs)... so I figured I'd try and do a bit of a refurb myself and replaced the battery, rubber feet and charger this week, unfortunately the only way to replace the glass is to replace the whole screen assembly (costing about 300 noop) so that's not really an option. While searching for solutions I found a few people saying that the anti-glare coating could be removed entirely by using Listerine and a microfibre cloth, so fuck it, I thought i'll give it a go...

As you can see, it's much more reflective when the screen is off, but in use it's hardly noticeable - certainly a massive improvement on the state it was in.

    • I’ve never seen damaged anti glare coating before. And yours is crazy messed up.monospaced

    • Anybody use that $1000 apple nano coating?scarabin
    • yeah, it was only visible at the edge for years, got worse when the battery started to die so it may be heat related... google 'apple staingate' to see somekingsteven
    • horror stories, i think these models 2014/2015 are particularly prone to it.kingsteven
    • I have a similar problem on a 2015 but it’s not even close to this bad. Just a little at the topnb
    • piece of paper. problem solvedautoflavour
    • i had my screen replaced for free by Apple as the coating was wearing away.Leigh
    • you're a king, stevenpseud
    • it's a common problem, I have a little but nothing like that on a 2015. You can remove the coating apparently but I haven't bothered yet as not that bad.fadein11
    • oops, should have read to the end.fadein11
    • I find rubbing/isopropyl alcohol is easier than mint listerine. Cleans up waxy or greasy finger prints that glass cleaner cannot remove.fattymcgrizzle
    • yeah, read a few techniques but went for the listerine because it wasn't as harsh... day 2 and this is such an improvement, wish i'd done it ages ago.kingsteven
    • I have exactly the same problem with my late 2013 mbp. even worse... thanks for the tip!sandpipe
    • be quite sparing with the listerine - i've seen some folks that damaged the screen because it leaked behind the glass! - small dabs and a circular movementkingsteven
    • worked for me, only took about 20 minutes! i may go back and tidy the edges up with a q-tipkingsteven
    • Is the glare really bad now? Wondering if I should take the plunge as well. Mine's got some nasty marks where they screen hits a couple of the keys.Gucci
    • haven't noticed any glare under normal lighting but the weather has been grim, i may regret it come hammock season...kingsteven
    • i read some folks used anti glare film that attaches statically afterwards... may be worth a look https://uk.gearbest.…kingsteven
