Are these new headphones wireless-only, or can they be wired too?

    • no cables :(
I love that my Sony cans can perform like regular headphones when I want them to
      monospaced
    • That's a bummer.mg33
    • As they push for a "post pc" era without wires, they need to go all in.

iPhone without ports, Macbook Air/Pro without ports, Etc.

      All part of the plan.

    • Thats why I keep my good ol AKG Studio headphones K171 MII. Wired and quality. Have them since around 10 years.Bennn

    • Depends. I got some pretty fair JBL 500, wireless only, and I must say I'm quite pleased. $45. No need for cables still.maquito
    • I only use them for Spotify & Zoom. For vinyl and CD, I got my good ol' Sony Mdr7506, with a fucking long cable.maquito

    fuck them headphones, read this:

"Apple Preps Next Mac Chips With Aim to Outclass Top-End PCs"

"Apple Inc. is planning a series of new Mac processors for introduction as early as 2021 that are aimed at outperforming Intel Corp.’s fastest.

"Chip engineers at the Cupertino, California-based technology giant are working on several successors to the M1 custom chip, Apple’s first Mac main processor that debuted in November. If they live up to expectations, they will significantly outpace the performance of the latest machines running Intel chips, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the plans aren’t yet public."

"Apple engineers are also developing more ambitious graphics processors. Today’s M1 processors are offered with a custom Apple graphics engine that comes in either 7- or 8-core variations. For its future high-end laptops and mid-range desktops, Apple is testing 16-core and 32-core graphics parts."

"For later in 2021 or potentially 2022, Apple is working on pricier graphics upgrades with 64 and 128 dedicated cores aimed at its highest-end machines, the people said. Those graphics chips would be several times faster than the current graphics modules Apple uses from Nvidia and AMD in its Intel-powered hardware."

babydick, not many really care about the headphones. M1 CPU is where it‘s at. If it hasn‘t impressed you yet like everyone else, well... Apple is working on 128 core variants for end of 2021 or 2022.

Mac Mini with Apple Silicon verified as incredible.

3rd party support for M1 limited; betas of Adobe software limited to Photoshop AND encountered some errors with Illustrator (which uses emulation), BUT overall floored by the performance AND majority of emulation isn't even noticeable.

As someone who has purchased $500+ headphones more than a couple times in my life, the price isn't really that shocking. People regularly pay $300–$400 for great over-ear headphones, and some pay a ton more than that. Right now there's a big market for wireless, noise-canceling, hifi sets and there are big players there from Sennheiser to B&W and Sony all in on that.

Apple has been in the headphone business for years now, and this is their foray into this niche market. They've always targeted the higher end, so it makes sense it's sorta luxury. And then you throw in the microphones, the bionic chip, the noise canceling, the siri integration, etc and I can basically understand the price.

Will I buy it? No, no way. I love my Sony 1000MX3s and wouldn't give up USB-C charging or my normal headphone jack for these. But I suppose this would be a natural replacement set down the line when the world is ready for wireless only.

    • People are missing the 5.1 surround sound aspect. When watching a movie, it keeps the sounds in spatial position to the screen. No other headphones do that.shapesalad
    • So if you're watching a movie and big spaceship is coming in from behind the camera with a big old sound effect...shapesalad
    • ...firstly it'll truly sound like it's behind you, secondly if you turn your head around - the sound fx will keep it's position.shapesalad
    • Hence $500.shapesalad
    • ^ that’s coolGnash

    M1 and Unreal Engine.... Question:

The new fancy pants M1 apples... can they run Unreal Engine 4/5 or do we have to wait for Epic to do some work on their end? I ask because I think you need a bulky desktop PC to get any sort of decent performance which is possibly in the $1500/2000 range? But an M1 Mini might outperform that for way less money.

Caveat - I have zero understanding of all this single thread multicore stuff. Enlighten me!

Loads of benchmarks comparing programming development types on two M1s, a Ryzen and an i9 Intel.

    https://tech.ssut.me/apple-m1-ch…

I don't understand most of this, but the gist of it is that the M1 works well in environments other than those it might have been expected they'd optimise for.

I've only seen one set of benchmarks that showed M1 under a slightly faltering light, but that was for some obscure crypto-esque computation that 99% of us would never use.

    Also, Intel is fucked.
