Last week, my partner had a bad fall and sprained her ankle. Thankfully it wasn't a fracture as we first suspected - given how swollen, bruised and painful it was - otherwise her entire current contract would be fucked, as it's mostly on location and she needs to be pretty mobile in about two weeks time. Given it's a pretty fucking important contract for her, it would Not Have Been Good.

About an hour ago, fucking hero Nairn here went from a gentle amble down the street, talking to a mum from ze nursery as we walked home, to a mighty sprint to prevent her scootering daughter getting hit by a van that was fucking-moronically reversing into a driveway, but instead of the expected exhibition heroic virtue, I managed two steps before some sly ghost cunt cattle-prodded my left muscle calf and then suddenly I couldn't use that muscle to walk with. Excellent. A pulled muscle. I've never had a pulled muscle, but as soon as this fucking thing hit I knew what it was.

So, after a 45 minute walk home that should take 15, I am now hobbling around the house with a ski sock filled with small bags of frozen peas, trying not to express any moments of Severe Fucking Ouch when I inadvertently use the afflicted muscle, because my partner really doesn't need to be thinking about the added problems. She's already feeling pretty guilty.

So now both of us are a bit incapacitated and we have careers to Do, a child to look after and - oh, fucking yes - my BiL and his partner coming to stay this weekend.

I don't often like London, but I particularly don't like London when I realise I have no family nearby who could help pick up the slack. FML.

    Aaanyway, the weather's nice.

Yesterday, I kicked off my life as a full-time freelancer for the first time in almost 20 years.

    Wow.

Since yesterday, I've been hustling on LinkedIn, sending messages to interesting agency contacts I've been collecting over the years from all over the place.

No replies yet, but come on ... it's early days.

Gotta say, though, it's a much, much different hustle from run-of-the-mill job hunting. More uncertain? Yeah, probably. More exciting? Fuck, yes.

    • You ok then? couple years ago it sounded rough going for you.shapesalad
    • Diversify - get some side hustles going, so you aren't 100% relying on freelance for income.shapesalad

    she's a big girl now

  • NBQ00-2

Spent the day at the park/ lake. Then some woman in her early 30’s comes to lay down near by me. Not far is another guy. Nothing unusual. There’s quite a few people there so people are close to each other.

Later on after I come back from a swim I see the other guy has approached her and is talking to her. After they finished chatting he asks her for her number and she give’s it to him.

He then packs his stuff and leaves while saying bye and something like “see you soon”. Not even five minutes have passed and an older man in his 50’s. I’d say maybe around 55 or older joins the woman. I immediately thought it’s her dad...

Until they kiss on the mouth like lovers. She’s not super pretty but also not bad, she’s cute and has a really good youthful body. The older man lays down next to her and they share touches and kisses. It was so weird. I immediately thought he must be a rich dude and is some sort of sugar daddy to her. He’s almost shorter than her and I wouldn’t see any reason why she would find him attractive unless she has an old man fetish or well... is enjoying a good lifestyle that he can provide financially.

But her giving out her number to the younger guy before made me think that she must be cheating on the old man.

    • a lot of variables don't you think? He might have been a work colleague or family relative. Who knows? But she's cheating is the first thing you think?Ianbolton

Just read a discussion on twitter: feature movies are always in 24 fps because we have a learned association between fiction and 24 fps, while 60 and higher frame rates only work for reality tv/news and in general look like 90s camcorder

I've always thought that Collateral (2004) was high frame rate, turns out its also 24fps

    Discuss

    • Yeah it was long known that 24fps gives that cinematic look while 60fps makes it feel TV/ sport-event'ish. Avatar was supposed to be 60fps originally.NBQ00
    • Us AV nerds have known this forever. That’s why you have to turn off motion smoothing on a tv immediately and never turn it on again.monospaced
    • They call it the soap opera effect because it looks like cheap shit at a high frame rate.monospaced
    • So, are movies stuck in 24 fps forever?drgs
    • probably. it's the same thinking behind all these retro pixel games, much more evocative than all the oh-so-real-but-not-q... ps5 super rendered nonsensehans_glib
    • the hobbit was 48fpspango

    • Yes and watch it on a smartphone vertically.NBQ00

    • Movies are experimenting with high frame rates. Gemini man was 60+ I think. 3D requires 60 possibly.monospaced
    • Im intrigued by the fact that this association is learned. When the last generation who grew up with late 80s-90s TV drama/reality TV dies, then we will be freedrgs
    • to make hfr moviesdrgs
    • Alternatively, start making reality tv/news in 24fps, then flip itdrgs
    • Oooof Gemini man was shit. Did not help the 60 fps camp lol.pango
    • Collateral looks different because it was early digital cinema. Another early one is 28 Days Later.
      ********
    • These days, tons of “films” are shot digital. only an excellent eye can see the difference. Partly because cameras have improved, DPs understand digital, etc
      ********
    • True 60fps is cool for sports, nature, adult films. Anything where you want to feel like you’re right there. Unlike a movie, which is a piece of art for viewing
      ********
    • weird, i was looking into this yesterday too. I was watching the new Top Gun and the jerky frame rate was pissing me off as we had seats near the frontIanbolton
    • Football (sports) are definitley better at 60fps. Gemini Man was actually 120fps for 3D and the realism only shows how terrible an actor W.Smith isIanbolton
    • 24 frames per second is what our natural vision feels closest to or what we dream in._niko
    • There’s a different look between a high shutter speed (Saving Private Ryan) and high frame rate (The Hobbit in theatre)
      ********
    • ^Wow wow wow.... I need a second... Wouldn't there be blank frames inbetween?pango
    • No they just show them for longer.monospaced
    • so less blur i guesspango
    • Am I correct to say that the blurriness which comes with 24fps is more forgiving -- for special effects, stunt doubles etc?drgs
    • like this scene in Terminator 2 up-resed to 8k and increased frame rate now looks low budget https://www.youtube.…_niko
    • vs the original which is much more cinematic https://www.youtube.…_niko
    • ugggh high frame rate made it feel like all the frames are gliding... it distracting...pango
    • It’s awful. But most people don’t turn it off and it’s turned on as default on pretty much all TVs. Just ask Tom cruise.monospaced

    well that was fucking entertaining..

went to watch top gun.. get tickets, dude at counter gives us wrong screening.. gives us 7:30pm instead of 8:50pm..

so we walk in; thinking it’s just started and we missed the trailers

Walk in just as they are doing a briefing for some mission, seems like its the beginning of the film..

Then its straight into all the fighter jet cheese ball Hyper military bit.. which for all its TEAM AMERICA bullshit is still pretty impressive to watch..

Few things don't make sense, but your brain is going, they will explain it..

Then, 1 hour after we sit down it ends..

we walked out unable to stop laughing as it was just so unbelievably terrible but also so perfect we missed all the cheesy love story stuff, and just caught the money shot..

ended up getting tickets refunded also..

moral of the story, only watch the last 1 hour of Top Gun and its actually just a movie about flying a jet.
    its hilarious

The people in the cinema must of thought we were crazy coming in an hour late

    • we just looked at the cinema number on the ticket, not the time.. so we just assumed it was the right oneautoflavour

Speaking of Chris Cunningham... I wonder what happened to him. Or did he just retire after 2003 pretty much?

He only did the 2003 short Rubber Johnny and then one more short in 2010.
