As a constantly distracted ADHD boy, the Pomodoro Technique has helped me immensely, when it comes to actually getting shit done.

I recommend using a hardware timer - in my case a cheapo kitchen timer

    • This had a very short half-life for me. Glad it’s working for you :)Gnash
    • I had to give it more than one chance :)jagara
    • The hardware timer was actually what made it work for me.jagara
    • Ya, you’re right. I tried it a few times but perhaps I didn’t give it enough time. Good habits are hard to formGnash
    • But I didn’t use a separate device - just my phone timerGnash
    • The hardware timer doesn't have extra distractions built-in, that's why it's an ideal device for this purpose IMO ;)jagara
    • I’ll give it a go. As soon as I’m done surfing the websGnash

I've been thinking lately – Society has gradually moved to be more inclusive. We rightly condemn discrimination against all manner of groups whose traits they have no control over (race, age, sexuality, disability, nationality etc)...

...by the same token, should't we also move away from celebrating those same traits? Seems strange to commend the results of arbitrary genetic or geographic lotteries. Rather, we should celebrate the achievements that people have actively worked towards.

    • Examples?Nairn
    • Uniformity brings extinction.
Society is not more inclusive, it's actually more ignorant.

About 25 years ago, one afternoon, my close friend and weed dealer in college taught me how to play backgammon. We enjoyed the casual game here and there until we graduated, at which point I had found a robust online backgammon platform where I started playing competitively. I read some books on the game, and even my girlfriend(s) during those years would play occasionally, and so I kept playing. I moved to NYC almost 15 years ago, and played regularly in the park(s) and clubs. When I got my first iPhone over 10 years ago, one of the first apps I installed was a backgammon game, and it kept me busy during cigarette breaks and other moments throughout the years.

    Anyone else play backgammon?

My wife thinks she is doing a good job of cutting our son’s hair and she is fucking terrible at it and he looks ridiculous but she refuses to accept the fact that she doesn’t know how to cut hair — despite having zero training or experience cutting hair ever.

Today is the 36th anniversary of the opening of the (semi) legendary The Point complex of bars which included the UK's first multiplex cinema in Milton Keynes.
I was one of the first ushers to work in the AMC Cinema inside when it opened. Part of my job was to sit at the back of every screening we were put into, to help folks that wanted to know where the popcorn stall or toilets were but hardly anyone ever did. So I ended up just sitting through hundreds of films, usually 4 a day! There were some great movies that didn't hang around long but were great to see multiple times on the big screen, Subway, Mishima, Night of The Living Dead to name a few, but by FAR the one film that stayed in the multiplex the longest at that time was Back To The Future. I must have seen it literally dozens of times but actually still love it, it was one of those rare movies that there is no limit to the amount of times I saw it.

    @stoplying

    Questions first:

    – How much are you willing to invest?
    – Does he want to dj or be a turntablist?
    – Digital is here to stay unless ..you prefer to buy records?
    – Turntables or Controllers?

I mean if he wants to either dj or be a turntablist then digital is the way unless he wants to be a purist and buy records.

So you have a couple of easy choices:

    Analog

You buy two second hand turntables and a second hand mixer.
There's loads of stuff for a good price specially in the US.

If he's gonna be a turntablist that's good cause he wont need so many records but if he sticks to it in two years he will surely want to go digital...

I understand its lots of money to invest now specially if it's a phase.

If he wants to deejay the he will need to buy records and for a good set of one hour and a half to two hours oyou need at least 30 records.

But it all depends of the genre of music he wants to play.

I'm pretty sure that for around 700$ you can buy gear good enough for him to practice.

    Digital

Well here you'll need to invest more...also in 2nd hand but still you can find decent stuff.

But yes he will need a computer.

Either turntablist or deejay he will be able to buy tracks starting lower as 1$...

If he doesn' want to continue deejaying you can always selll the gear again.

Mixers don't lose so much value.
Neither do the Technics SL1200 mk2.

If you like and after you decide I can give you a list of gear that would be okay to start with for both scenarios independently or at once if you invest in a Rane SL4 you'll be able to use the old mixer in the digital era.

  • oey_oey1

Unless you wanna buy digital turntables the rest of the turntables are adequate for both practices in both formats.

    • hope this helped a bit.
I can let you know wich gear I use as well.
      oey_oey

    Turntables

Numark TTX (2nd Hand cost between 150$ and 250$)

Really good to learn and to destroy, something that will take time cause they're build like a tank.

Other real solid turntables and I'm only mentioning ones that you can scratch with to keep options open. Please notice that straight arm dj turntables are not so good for the vinyl if he decides to just deejay music. I noticed that second hand turntables are more expansive in the US, so I don't mention the top in the game...yes I was checking eBay:

    Stanton STR.8 150 (you have a s-arm version Stanton STR 150)
    Reloop RP 7000
    Vestax PDX 2000
Audio Technica AT LP 1240 (with USB) - I so badly want one myself

    Mixers

If you prefer not to go digital at all, you can add a Rane SL2 for that later plus some controller, you can chose from these solid DJ battle mixers:

    Vestax PMC-05 Pro III VCA
    Vestax PMC-06 VCA
    Mixars Cut
    Epsilon Inno-Mix2 BK
    DJ-Tech DIF-1S V2
    DJ-Tech DIF-2S mk2
    Ecler Nuo 2.0
Pioneer DJ DJM-250MK2 (not really a battle mixer but hey)
Pioneer DJ DJM-400 (also not a battle mixer but really fun to mix with, the 45 is really expensive so...)

    There are better ones obviously.

You also have Serato ready DJ battle mixers for an affordable price and thy're solid mixers for vinyl only as well:

    Mixars Duo
    Numark Scratch

If you go digital you can skip the needles buy buying Phase for example.

Or just buy a Rane DJ One Controller.

Any way I would invest in a way to keep all options open:

    – Analog and digital
    – Turntablist and DJ (he can be both so why not?)

    Hope this helps somehow.
