Spent July 2-6 in Denver. Girlfriend had a wonderful idea I'd like to share.

I have a $20 WyzeCam, she suggested we bring it along. As we travel with a dog, anytime he can not accompany us, he needs to be in his kennel. I set up the camera on the AirBnb's wifi and connected to it through the app.

If we ever had to be out longer than expected, we could check on him. You can talk through that camera if you need to calm or confuse a barking / whining dog.

He was always lying there, but for the price, it should be in every traveling dog owner's bag.

I have a much-needed two days off today and tomorrow. Work was out of control last week - logged close to 60 hours due to a new business effort, so looking forward to some free time in which I plan to:

    - shoot a bunch of b-roll clips for a company recruiting video I'm in
    - Start and finish a Udemy course on mixing and mastering in Logic Pro
    - Make a new CBD infusion / tincture
    - Go for a bike ride and discover how out of shape I am
    - Watch a few more episodes of ZeroZeroZero
    - Work on final edits to some freelance portrait work I did recently
    - Back up NAS and both computers

I'm sure I will complete only one of these tasks, I just don't know which one yet.

    • "two days off", eh?

I say "TAKE a CBD infusion / tincture" and "Go for a bike ride..."

Been looking after the kid/working from home all this week - this evening is the first time I've been in to the studio since late on Sunday night.

The bar at the front of the building is open again, and it's fairly busy - like nothing's changed in n months.

I just popped through to go and check my mail and was hit by a miasmic fug of body odour (it's a bit humid in LDN today) and i started gagging a bit, stepped back, held my breath and ploughed through and back out again quickly.

I can practically see the fucking cloud of coronoids.

    Eish.

    • I'm guessing today is the first day it's been open - the other studio dwellers are glumly sat out front, realising the quiet days are gone and normality's back.Nairn
    • For now, anyway.

I've just realised that I'm playing a game.

I'm working, but I'm moving vector elements around to make the best use of space in material terms, for processing later.

The material is like A3 in size, and not particularly expensive, so I shouldn't really care. The forms are glyphs, and if I move them all around in a certain way - I GAIN 30% FREE MATERIAL!

PLUS PLUS MEGA WIN! BONUS POINTS!

15 minutes I've spent shunting things around and tessellating them into vaguely-satisfying formations.

And then I'll throw that 30% saved material into one of the many boxes of off-cuts I have, and it may perhaps be of its £1.45 or whatfuckever value some day.

    Winning!

    • There's an app in this.Nairn
    • Send outline forms to the cloud as part of some game and use punters as pseudo-AI agents, solving complex problems.Nairn
    • Fascinatingmonospaced
    • You could use this to optimize code or other various things through gamified, guerilla crowd sourcing. Interesting.monospaced

there should be some meta mark up language that sends complex problems to the cloud that are then stripped of context and used as base 'problems' that can be used to add dynamism to online games.

Someone I don't know recommended me to someone I know even less for some design work - something I've not really focused on for a good few years now. Recomendee contacted me via WhatsApp, an app I loathe have installed solely to communicate with my partner, and which I thought I had locked down to prevent anyone from contacting me via it.

    So weird.

I've tracked down recommender and they're based somewhere I used to be, so that's the connection, I guess.. but.. I don't know who the fuck they are or why they'd know me for my work.

    • its fucking facebook isn't it? their grubby tentacles are everywhere reading and listening to everything, making unwanted connections without anyone's say-so.hans_glib
    • I've managed to avoid facebook but everyone I know only seems to communicate with whatsapp. I've got clients using it instead of emailFax_Benson

    • I've put the files in the dog-dirt bin in the parkFax_Benson
    • Lol. Yeah, had a client emailing me, using whats ap, text and then sending files on wetransfer the other week, all in the space of about an hour.webazoot

I have aged like 5 years this year. Not because of stress, but the exact opposite -- decomposing at home.

I see it in my parents and other people who retire. They wither from doing nothing.

A little bit of stress is good for you.

  • drgs2

I've been talking a lot about about age lately -- which reminded me of another story.

Exactly 20 years ago, when I was 18 years old, I enrolled in CS studies at NTNU in Trondheim. The sophomore students organized some kind of bar-to-bar tour for us freshmen to get to know each other.

There was one older guy among us -- a 38 year old hairdresser by the name of Kolbjørn. I remembered it because he had a tip for us: "Think of me as a koala bear". He looked nothing like a koala bear. He had nose and ear piercings etc.

It was clear he was conscious about his age. 4 hours into drinking I'm hugging this guy and I say to him: "Dude, I think you're cool. When I grow old I want to be like you." I followed it with a hand shake.

Never seen him since. Today I am his age and I understand why. Sorry about this, Kolbjørn, hope hairdressing worked out for you.

    • Best thing to do would be to treat him as same age, ie. pretend as nothing unusual and to not talk about the age thing at all.drgs
    • It's like the expression "the hell is definitely below", which implies some level of doubt.
"Dude, you're definitely cool" is the same.

I’m getting tired of the internet, binge-watching YouTube and other web stuff or porn or whatever. It feels like I’ve seen and read everything.

Got rid of my laptop a while ago and thinking of getting rid of my iPad Pro too. So that it limits my screen time just to the smartphone when really necessary and makes it less convenient to be on the net so much.

I want to be more outside, maybe do more cooking and other activities.

    Cheers

I want to buy a car. It’s my first car. In Uk. London. With aim to explore outside London and find a decent commuter village to live in. So I’m thinking a used VW up. I’ve driven one before and found it totally ok and fine for my needs. Wife also prefers such a car rather than a Mazda Mx-5 or a used Saab or Lexus IS200 which is what I’d prefer to consider.

Road tax £20 and mpg is great. Used prices are around £3k ~ £4K.

What do I need to know / consider? How do you know if tires are ‘good’ - what are you looking for? Tread depth? Small cracks in rubber?

And why do people buy cars on finance, monthly payments of £150ish, over three years amounts to way more £ than the price of a decent used car. What am I missing. Is there something good about that? I can afford it but it just seems excessively expensive in the long term.

    • Cars newer than 3 years dont need a MOT. Lots of folk dont want the grief of repairs etc.Doris_McSquirter
    • Folk can get a nicer car on finance to show off to the neighours.Doris_McSquirter

    • I'd look into zipcar or whatever - might be much cheaper for you in London. You really don't understand why some people use finance to make large purchases?Nairn
