about to buy a "new" car today... I know buying shiny things can be fun, but fuck spending 20k+. The allure of buying shit wears off as you get older I guess.

Woke up with a clogged ear. Had a panic attack trying to avoid sticking something in there for some releif. I tried some peroxide which will work if I do it once a day for a few days. But, in the meantime my right ear feels like outs giving birth. :(

My local council has confirmed they are spending millions redeveloping their website.

Documents from the Council’s meeting this week reveal global consulting giant Deloitte is behind the “website redesign and digital transformation project”, which had a staggering budget of $8.7 million for its first stage.

And councillors unanimously approved a further $6.4 million for phase two of the project, to start before July 1.

That indicates a total spend of $15.1 million, which the council at first confirmed.

$15.1 million!!!!! Are you fucking kidding me?

Looks like I'm spontaneously going to Hawaii in a couple of weeks. My girlfriend (the one I met at a wedding and in a LDR with) needed CE credits and saw info about a conference going on in Hawaii yesterday. Asked if I wanted to go, and thankfully I'm not FT and my clients are cool with me being remote. Bought my flight, airbnb, and rental yesterday (holy shit girlfriends incur a lot of costs)

We're both so damn excited. This was totally unexpected for us. We get to see each other every couple of weeks. Hell last two weeks she got so busy at some points we didn't even get to talk for a couple days at a time. A couple weeks ago we were fantasizing about going on a trip together. Hopefully we pass this relationship crucible.

Got paid to take a road trip today.

Drove 460km today round trip for a client to inspect like 16 welds. When I arrived to site they said no welding right now but maybe in 2h.

So I talked to the welder and he seemed to think he was not going to get anything done that day. We chatted with the site supervisor and he told me to just head back to town.

I get paid per km so not sad about it, was a nice drive though the mountains.

When i put the key in the front door as I got home last night, I had a momentary panic, thinking i'd left the heater on in the studio.

I'm parsimonious and a failed but ever-trying greenie, so I was filled with guilt at the sheer waste.

I've just got back in to the studio an hour or so ago (it's mid-afternoon here in LDN) and was at first pleased to see that I'd actually turned it off. Now, however, I'm simply fucking freezing and any metal I come into contact with physically hurts to touch it's so cold.

Frankly, Gaia can go fuck herself right now, I'm on the side of emissions-spewing human industry til I can feel my fingers again.

    • It ain't that cold here but I can't wait for the summer. Tired of wearing layers, and long sleeves. I WANT SHORTS!Maaku

Haven't invoiced anything since June, 8 months with not a dime coming in... the result of a stupid war of nerves with my current producer (video commercials).
Haven't taken advantage of these months for anything productive either, lost a good deal of confidence in my skills despite putting it into perspective with the unhealthy work relationship.

I'm finally taking the long overdue steps towards new representation but I'm drained and broke, not dangerously so though, I can fortunately always rely on friends and family for a hand but then debts etc.

It's not my first time in this situation and I know I should bounce back, but I hate being back in this position of needing to make something great from nothing to get to the next level. Harder to find the drive and sense as years go by, I better smarten up and understand once and for all not to let things go so bad before taking action! :-/

    • are you guys specialists in one area? I do design, photography, programming, motion graphics, illustration, audio, web, UI,UX, video, CD, AD, apps, print, ecomm_niko

    • plus your always-busy approach is better than mine in the long run, I've wasted years being stuck in my head, never happier than in action.spl33nidoru
    • @spl33nidoru It's not so much that I'm terrible on my own, more that when I'm not working I just concentrate on finding new work. Where as it might have been...Wolfboy

    • Sounds like you need to think less about jobs, and more about a business offer. Like what can you offer to a business, to help them increase revenue?shapesalad
    • Your skills as a director = narrative and telling stories. So many business out there are dying to communicate their offering clearly to their market.shapesalad
    • Make a website/example portfolio and sell your offering: that you can help them communicate clearly to their audience.shapesalad
    • Then email everything business, be it a mom pop shop or concrete merchant etc. everything near you. do all the social mediashapesalad
    • Before you know it, you'll be raking it in, spirits lifted, money in bank. End of the day, prestige commercials or cool music videos....shapesalad
    • or corporate videos... you're the person that can create a timeline piece of communication to increase their revenue.shapesalad
    • And I'd say, lower your pride. Learn the craft of film making, sound recording, editing through the corp easy jobs. Don't need to master it all, but later helpsshapesalad
    • you to delegate if you know a bit about it. You can build your own team around you. Build your own business. Then no need for your producer war!shapesalad
    • ^ easier said than done. But job market sucks, if you can stand alone and build your own reputation and business, you have something to fall back on.shapesalad
    • Good call shapesalad. I am quite comfortable with the film making process (and always learning), always been my passion. The past couple years have beenspl33nidoru
    • rewarding (big budget MVs, leading brands) but taxing (producers, agencies), and I somehow feel like I didn't achieve my goals in that field yet.spl33nidoru
    • Opening shop like you're suggesting is something I've considered. Mixed experiences around me (you do become a manager) but you're giving me food for thought.spl33nidoru
    • Wolfboy, allow yourself that time, can be half days, set hours etc, sounds like you have the discipline to pull it off.spl33nidoru
    • well.. always good to have a plan B. Seems only a few keep prestigious work through their careers, the rest of us fall to the side as we age.shapesalad
    • You're right, I need to consider that option less lightly.spl33nidoru
    • don't need to reinvent the wheel and get the most skilled designer/dev somehwat out there. You already have your skillset and you're ready to work with it :-)mekk

Ugh, applied for something this morning but I'll need to wait quite a bit off time before I find out the answer. I'm so wired for instant gratification, waiting for anything is almost painful.
