What’s happening across the country isn’t a second wave.

    It’s still the first wave.

White House Official: Americans Will “Just Have to Live With” Massive Coronavirus Surge

    https://slate.com/news-and-polit…

The three most populous states in the U.S. recorded their highest daily totals of new coronavirus cases on Wednesday. California announced more than 7,000, while Florida and Texas announced about 5,500 each. The “positivity rate” of tests in those states is increasing, which means the rise in cases discovered is not explained by increased test availability; in Florida and Texas, positivity rates have roughly doubled in the past week and tripled in the past month.

We talk a lot about cases vs deaths. Honestly, most of us are paying far too much attention to these statistics. It's useful for policy making and tracking the spread, but not useful for individuals.

Never forget that if you get a medium to serious case of covid-19 you will probably survive as a person with some difficulty breathing or other health problems for the rest of your life.

    • it's useful for an individual to understand the scope and scale of deaths when asked to return to large gatherings at work because a govt official says so.imbecile
    • I know someone who had medium to serious and he hasn’t been able to lie down for two monthsSlashPeckham
    • @SlashPeckham there's an illustrator friend of mine, who had it, early 40's. She's had some heart complications since recovering. The lasting effects seem scaryPhanLo
    • @imbecile I don’t disagree with you. But I will say that death is not what you should be trying to avoid.

Can't believe wearing a mask or not has become a political debate in the US. For fucks sake just wear a mask. Asian countries have been doing this for years already and it's clearly working. Masks plus keep your distance until we get proper treatment or a vaccine.

So just looking at current numbers the panic doesn't add up or make sense. I'd need to see total death reported but no data I can find on it. However I did find data from all sources saying where did all the non covid19 average deaths go... but the hopkins numbers are about 120K deaths, CDC thinks saturation of at least 25 million people. Extrapolating that data on average with 331mil we could see a 13X increase with 100% saturation. So that would be about 1.6 million in total for US. Based on CDC top ten deaths per year there is about 2 million health related. (i also tossed in 47K suicide because for sure this gov response is going to increase that). My guess is counting covid 19 plus whatever normal other medical death we probably would be in the 2.5 million. Larger by half a million or .15%. But the thing is this thing seems to target frail people, so good chance in the following couple years we see a large reduction of medical deaths that offset the extra 500k. So does any of these actions looking at data make sense?

And does it justify the costs? Tossed a few bucks down for a domestic abuse charity knowing volunteers since they have seen a 65% increase since lockdowns. The executive power grabs and loss of basic liberties. jobs losses never to return. locally so far we have seen 74 deaths. tested 48K in population of 420K. Rough rounding that is 520 ppl we are stupidly trying to save. People already more than likely have issues. To try and save them we torch the economy. We hit over 30% unemployment. Burned through rainy day funds and just wrecked the shit out of everything. Allowing executive governor power plays and bullshit that should never pass as pseudo law.

I was watching this long ago and based on numbers being produced I was thinking 15mil. Which i warned my parents about before and they thought i was crazy. 15 million isn't spanish flu but significant enough to worry about ppl. But seeing new estimate and new timelines of spread. I think more harm comes from gov lockdowns and prevention than virus. In every facet from liberty to actual life

There's very few Covid patients in the Royal in Edinburgh now, my mates wife is a nurse there, she was saying, we've been lucky and they were actually well prepared.

Sadly there is now a lot of people coming in who stayed away who will probably die of other complications. Lots of overdoses, alcoholics and elderly people who've fell or injured themselves and left wounds for a long time without treatment.

    • One of co-workers was talking to nurse friends and she said that too - no one in the hospitals for covid any more which is awesomemicrokorg
