it's very tempting to dig deeper into Blender. But from an economic perspective it makes more sense to do so with one of the major 3d apps like Maya, C4D or Houdini. To be compatible with studios and freelance jobs.
And because life is short. Learning a new 3d app is already time consuming enough.
What are your thoughts?
- Steve jobs said look to the fringes to see where things will be in the future. The fringe is Blender...shapesalad
- I'd say the 'concepts' within 3d software are similar. That you have a vertex and manipulate it, construct polygons, assign texture that reacts to a light.shapesalad
- Once that is understood, it's merely a case of differing UI between the softwares.shapesalad
- There's not a single motion design or major 3D/ VFX studio using Blender that I know of. So economically does it make sense?NBQ00
- It seems it could be great as an add-on/ complimentary tool but as an entire pipeline it seems more suitable for independent filmmakers & animators.NBQ00
- If you learn C4D, and focus more on the craft of 3D rather than C4D, learning blender is then getting familiar with a UI, rather than concepts of 3D craft.shapesalad
- I would love to see the Blender devs creating some FBX type export option to be able to export everything into Maya, C4D, Houdini. Not sure if possible thoNBQ00
- shape, what you're explaining is apples and oranges. I know it's just UI differences but it's about being compatible with studios and freelance projects.NBQ00
- Of course I don't really care which 3d app I'm using but when you work for a studio or freelance gigs you need to be compatible with them.NBQ00
- maya is over bloated and fucking expensive, C4D is okay, blender has become kick arse but I'd focus on houdinimugwart
- (and there is modo as well )mugwart
- its all a question of what you want to get out of it. Maya is a vfx work horse but has more people swearing at it but it is tried and tested.mugwart
- houdini has become the silent hero it is very very powerful but if you just want something to learn - you cant go wrong with blendermugwart
- sidefx latest promo:
https://www.sidefx.c…
it is free to learnmugwart - blender has become seriouly powerful recently so save some bang and learn this, see if you like it but if you need to go pro I would focus on another toolmugwart
- Like I said I wish the Blender Devs would work on implementing import & export options from & for other major 3D apps. Unless it exists?NBQ00
- I don't mean just importing models but proper full scenes with all shading, texturing, rigs, lighting. Maybe not possible.NBQ00
- I think the biggest incentive to get into blender is the pace of development. It's developing VERY fast compared to other 3d packages. Think Blender in 5 yrsmonNom
- I think Blender is set to become a much more dominant player. Especially as autodesk doesn't put a ton of resources into Maya. Est. 20 devs work on it?monNom
- I've heard that major studios hire people who don't know anything except Blender. Talent is talent, regardless of software.monospaced
- Which studios?NBQ00
- Not sure really. I just heard this from Blender Youtubers.monospaced
- 3d skills are largely transferable. I came to blender from Softimage XSI and it was a very easy transition. The concepts were all the samemonNom
- If you want to work for major studios, you're probably doing most of your work in zbrush, mari, motion builder, 3d coat, Houdini (only particles and fx), etc.monNom
- To be honest, if youre new to 3d, don't think of entering a VFX house, might be wrong of me to write but it's a horrible lifestylemugwart

I was asked if Substance 3D Painter from Adobe is any good.
Has somebody any infos on this software?
Q is from a kid who would like to do 3D stuff, don't know where he heard about that piece of software. And what is the best way to learn about materials and render engines in blender? I bet blender has something similar or better.
In my understanding it's how you set up the materials and which render engine you use, I bet blender has some really good features nowadays and there must be some really good tutorial about materials around.
Thanks for any hints :-)
- Tried to use it back when it was in beta or something, part of the Adobe CC suite, now they have an entire 3D suite and it's separate payment.grafician
- Better learn Blender and be done with itgrafician
- Take a look over at https://www.blenderk…grafician
- looks good, nice link:) thanks graf!uan
- install this for free https://www.blenderk… great starting point for assetsshapesalad
- ah already posted by graficianshapesalad
- substance is great for setting up pbr materials for real-time engines. Here is a good intro https://substance3d.…robotinc
- blenderkit materials above are also pbr basedrobotinc
- Substance is a good stand-alone texturing product. Creative use of blender nodes can give you more flexibility and capabilities, but with added complexity.monNom
- You can do multi-material masking in blender easily with painted UV masks or masking by vertex-colors (separate RGB then drive mix shaders).monNom
- direct texture painting has existed for a long time in blender and is robust. You can also configure materials to respond to edges (pointiness) and creases (AO)monNom
- Then there are add-ons that will get you even further: https://blendermarke…monNom
- Geometry nodes can be used to drive materials, so you can get things like distance from another object influencing your materials...monNom
- Oh and you can simply apply materials per face as well. It is much more powerful to do it all in Blender. There's a learning curve, but it's worth it.monNom
- thanks robotinc and monNom, your detailed in-depth information gave me valuable insights. Respect!uan

Hay anyone tested this? Virtual computer from anywhere with many high end apps pre-installed (Blender, Houdini, Adobe CC, etc).
Seems pretty cool for 3D and other type of CAD/ Motion Design work or gaming too.

- The major issue i see is regarding the in house pipeline and tools from each studio.
But I feel that this is the futur of workstations.ApeRobot - they have all the major apps preinstalled (Blender, Houdini, Maya, Cinema, Adobe CC, etc). and if you have fast connectivity this seems really great.NBQ00
- apps are installed, you still need to have paid for your licence for them.shapesalad
- As long as the latency isn't shit (which is a huge question mark), I don't see why this wouldn't work. A lot of powerful software already runs like this.section_014
- During the pandemic lots of game dev studios did this...VNC/RDT server on work box(or virtualized), and a dumb laptop to watch a video stream of your 'screen'monNom
- Unless I'm missing something extra these guys are doing...monNom

- awesome. thank you for finding that.shapesalad

Blender sucks cuz it's too technicalgrafician - too technical... or you are not technical enough.. right?neverscared

One has been learning Blender past week... having come from C4D.
Wow.... it's amazing.
The archipack add on is fantastic.
The materials, lighting, Eevee - incredible.
The quality of image gained is just stunning. On a 2013 iMac. Back in 2013 I spent hours rendering from C4D and it always had that 'computer graphics' look to it, looked shit frankly.
Whereas with Blender.. one weekend and I've got that nice realistic sunlight through a window onto wood floor look going on - and it looks stunning, no need to do loads of compositing.
Dive in guys. takes a few hours to get your head around the UI, shortcuts etc... but boom, once you get it.. and it's Free!!
- one thing you need on mac: the old roller ball might mouse, the newer touch mouse is useless, you need that middle button/roller.shapesalad
- every time i have a crack at it, i get beaten back by the sheer complexity of the thing.hans_glib
- im going to try to slowly change over. been on c4d about 14 years so going to be hell lol.where_am_i
- just binge watch youtube tutorials, follow some, play around. You'll get it. Concepts remain the same as in C4D, just a different UI which is surprisngly nicer.shapesalad
- < Forgot to mention that lovely light on a wood floored room interior - fucking realtime! unbelievable quality.shapesalad
- and I didn't need to learn octane or buy several gpu's or mess with unreal engine.shapesalad
- i have been on redshift on c4d since swapping from arnold about five years back. so may get redshift for it if I get into it. I just struggle to find time towhere_am_i
- commit to learning an entire new software, and for work obviously need the speed/knowledge of c4d. But I want to put an effort in. Maxon has lost the plot a bitwhere_am_i

Really want to try out the Grease Pencil features, these are some really good examples from Jama Jurabaev
- wow, great technique! I just took a bash at recreating the skeleton in 2.79 and it was impressively fast to get to a result.monNom
- more examples from same guy:
https://www.youtube.…
https://www.youtube.…monNom - for those wondering: paint in grease pencil. then convert strokes to curves. in curves panel, add a bevel to give it geo.monNom
- for the spaceman in the video above, you can paint along surface by selecting Stoke Placement: Surface in GP toolbarmonNom
- gonna have some fun with this ;)monNom
- here's what I got from maybe 20mins of playing with this technique. Not production quality, but certainly usable. https://i.imgur.com/…monNom
- I wish Redshift would get a Toon shader worthy of Arnold's.CyBrainX
