I was asked if Substance 3D Painter from Adobe is any good.
Has somebody any infos on this software?
Q is from a kid who would like to do 3D stuff, don't know where he heard about that piece of software.

And what is the best way to learn about materials and render engines in blender? I bet blender has something similar or better.

In my understanding it's how you set up the materials and which render engine you use, I bet blender has some really good features nowadays and there must be some really good tutorial about materials around.

    Thanks for any hints :-)

    • Tried to use it back when it was in beta or something, part of the Adobe CC suite, now they have an entire 3D suite and it's separate payment.grafician
    • Better learn Blender and be done with itgrafician

    • looks good, nice link:) thanks graf!uan
    • install this for free https://www.blenderk… great starting point for assetsshapesalad

    • substance is great for setting up pbr materials for real-time engines. Here is a good intro https://substance3d.…robotinc
    • blenderkit materials above are also pbr basedrobotinc
    • Substance is a good stand-alone texturing product. Creative use of blender nodes can give you more flexibility and capabilities, but with added complexity.monNom
    • You can do multi-material masking in blender easily with painted UV masks or masking by vertex-colors (separate RGB then drive mix shaders).monNom
    • direct texture painting has existed for a long time in blender and is robust. You can also configure materials to respond to edges (pointiness) and creases (AO)monNom
    • Then there are add-ons that will get you even further: https://blendermarke…monNom
    • Geometry nodes can be used to drive materials, so you can get things like distance from another object influencing your materials...monNom
    • Oh and you can simply apply materials per face as well. It is much more powerful to do it all in Blender. There's a learning curve, but it's worth it.monNom
    • thanks robotinc and monNom, your detailed in-depth information gave me valuable insights. Respect!uan
