I wanted to buy a second hand iMac from 2017 last year.
    A 27" with i7" 16 GB RAM, 512GB for around 1700€.

So if I understand correctly a MacMini with the same RAM and drive size which would cost 1200€ is def better?

And I would save 500€ to use in a display or two.
    But I can't upgrade above 16GB RAM....

    • if you have read the threads the new Mac processor is revolutionary....the speed is incredible....but I have just read about it...look into it!dkoblesky
    • I've read the threads. So I guess the new Mac will be the bomboey_oey

Heads up if you use the apple pencil next to the magic mouse -

I was working on an illustration project this afternoon.
With the apple pencil still in my hand, I reached over and changed some tunes on iTunes - all the sudden my mouse (magic mouse) went haywire and wouldn't respond correctly - Thought maybe the sensor underneath was funky but realized it was being affected by the pencil -

Crazy that a second hand laptop from 2015 is more expensive than a MacMini...

    • Crazy that they engineered their entry level machine to be this powerful.monospaced
    • I'm so happy I didn't waste my money in a second hand computer two months ago. can't stop repeating that to myself.oey_oey

Buyer’s Guide: Don't Buy a MacBook Pro Now

    https://www.macrumors.com/2021/0…

"major upgrades expected to key features such as the chipset, display, Touch Bar, charging, ports, and design customers eyeing a new MacBook Pro may be better off waiting for updated models to arrive later this year."

I'm about 2 weeks from pulling the trigger on a new M1 machine as my 2013 machine has slowed down quite a bit (still very functional but has it's noticeable lagging issues)... I think I'll hold off tho.

btw... fingers crossed this is true:

"Finally, Apple is looking to remove the Touch Bar and restore the physical function key row. Apple introduced the Touch Bar on the 2016 MacBook Pros, providing a small OLED touchscreen strip along the top of the keyboard to offer customizable controls and different functions on a per-app basis, but the Touch Bar never seemed to catch on with consumers."

    • would wait also over the iMac and iPad until the new 2021 editions pop upgrafician
    • No doubt there will be new Macs with Apple silicon this year, but it could be another 6+ months.monospaced

Silver Sparrow is an activity cluster that includes a binary compiled to run on Apple’s new M1 chips but lacks one very important feature: a payload.

According to data provided by Malwarebytes, Silver Sparrow had infected 29,139 macOS endpoints across 153 countries as of February 17, including high volumes of detection in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany.

Though we haven’t observed Silver Sparrow delivering additional malicious payloads yet, its forward-looking M1 chip compatibility, global reach, relatively high infection rate, and operational maturity suggest Silver Sparrow is a reasonably serious threat, uniquely positioned to deliver a potentially impactful payload at a moment’s notice. Given these causes for concern, in the spirit of transparency, we wanted to share everything we know with the broader infosec industry sooner rather than later.

Would any of you ever go with a single 32" monitor over two 27" monitors?

Back to monitors and Mac mini M1 and this is mostly for you ideaist, particularly around the non-USB C Ben-Q monitors

My setup would be the following:

    - Mac mini connected to monitors.
    - Work MBP connected to monitors.
(Does this mean two outputs from Mini to two monitors, or, does it mean one output to it, and the monitors daisy-chained together?

The BenQ has the following connections:
    1 - HDMI (v2.0)
    1 - DisplayPort (v1.4)
    1- MiniDisplayPort (v1.4)
    Daisy Chain Technology Thunderbolt 3
    1- Thunderbolt 3 ( PowerDelivery 65W, DisplayPort Alt Mode, Data )
    1- Thunderbolt 3 out ( PowerDelivery 15W )
    2 - USB Type B ( Upstream )
    4 - USB 3.1 ( Downstream )
    DisplayPort out (MST) Yes

I've got multiple things connected to the iMac and a USB hub. Looks like across two BenQ monitors there's more than enough connectivity.

Am I missing anything here? I think these monitors would allow me to freely switch between the Mac mini displayed on both, or my MBP displayed on both, simply toggling between inputs or something on the monitors. That about right?

    • I believe you're correct @mg33.

Ideally between a Mac Mini and my MacBook Pro, we'd use 2 USB-C driven monitors, BUT the price is right on the BenQ.
      ideaist
    • AND I think you can single output to monitor 1 with thunderbolt 3 and then daisy-chain to monitor 2 with thunderbolt 3.

      Sweet.
      ideaist
    • Tight. So, the BenQ for $500 lacking USB-C wouldn't really be a problem. Would be nice, but the fact that it has so many USB options is still nice.mg33
    • Man I can't wait to do this. Especially with the iMac trade in of $840 value. Seems stupid not to upgrade.mg33
    • I have a personal MBP too... don't use it much, it's more an around-the-house laptop and for travel.mg33
    • Fantastic.

Let me / us know how it goes. I assume you can return IF it/they go disastrous, BUT i'm sure you can figure out the best setup.

"The Mac mini can only drive two displays at a time, and one of those has to be over HDMI. Since that HDMI port is HDMI 2.0, it doesn’t have the throughput to handle 4K at 120Hz, or 8K at 60Hz."

    • https://www.reddit.c… - You can have two monitors, one via Thunderbolt and one via HDMI.ideaist
    • That would really only be critical for 4k video work though, right?mg33
    • Yes and only if you need to show 120fps at 4k, which nobody produces. That’s a spec for twitch gaming only. Nobody does that on macs anyway.monospaced
    • The only devices that utilize that spec are the PS5 the new Xbox and high end pc gaming rigs with GPUs that cost more than the Mac mini.monospaced
    • So the Mac mini can drive two 5k displays no problem. Probably more.monospaced

Last question for you esteemed Mac nerds.

Even though the M1 maxes out at 16GB of RAM, it should be all-around faster in every measurable aspect than my 2017 iMac 3.8 Ghz, right?

Main uses are Logic Pro and Lightroom. I've got something like 40GB of RAM now in the iMac, but it seems like comparisons I can do just show that the M1 mini just smashes everything with the i5 chip.

    • I'd love to see a full comparison, but Mac mini - https://browser.geek…mg33
