Well this might put a pause on ordering a mini...
M1 Mac Users Report Excessive SSD Wear
Across Twitter and the MacRumors forums, users are reporting that M1 Macs are experiencing extremely high drive writes over a short space of time. In what appear to be the most severe cases, M1 Macs are said to be consuming as much as 10 to 13 percent of the maximum warrantable total bytes written (TBW) value of its SSD.Flash memory on solid-state drives, such as those used in Macs, can only be written to a certain number of times before they become unstable. Software ensures that load is spread evenly across the drive's memory cells, but there is a point when the drive has been written to so many times that it can no longer reliably hold data. So while SSD wear is normal, expected behavior, drives should not be exhausting their ability to hold data as quickly as some M1 Macs seem to be.
One user showed that their M1 Mac had already consumed one percent of its SSD after just two months, while another M1 Mac with a 2TB SSD had already consumed three percent. The total data units written for these machines is running into many terabytes, when they would normally be expected to be considerably lower.

Alright, Mac mini ordered, trade in set up for my iMac, ordered two BenQ PD2700U monitors, should have everything by middle of next week. With help from someone on Reddit, got all the cables I needed ordered for connecting two computers and going with a dual monitor setup.
Next steps... migrating stuff from my iMac to my NAS to get the iMac under 1TB, upgrade to Big Sur, backup to Time Machine, and prep for a transfer to the Mini when it arrives.
- And here's the thing... knowing Apple does trade-ins, if they release a better Mini later this year, I'll just trade up to that.mg33

I've got one of the BenQ monitors hooked up to my work MBP as of last night, running it at 2560x1440, which is a smaller resolution than I typically use, but feels nice to sit back further from the screen.
It's nice to look at a matte screen again to be honest. I have no windows in my basement so no glare on any monitor, but this immediately felt softer on my eyes than the glossy iMac or Thunderbolt Display. The BenQ monitors come pre-calibrated, so I haven't touched anything to do with the screen appearance.
Didn't realize I was going to need a USB-C to USB-B cable to use the monitor's USB connections as a hub. So, had to order a couple of those and get them tomorrow.
I had to get a web cam since neither monitor has a camera, and I'm already missing the speakers on the Thunderbolt monitor; the BenQ's speakers (which I only use for video chats, I don't listen to music on this computer.) are pretty low-volume, and I don't like that I can't adjust the volume with my keyboard anymore. I'm sure I'll get used to it.
I think in the moment I'm annoyed by what feels like far more cables to make all this work than with an iMac or Mac monitor, but once all that's hooked up I probably won't think about it again. My biggest question right now is if there's a way to daisy chain USB cables between monitors to use external things plugged into either monitor with either computer.
I'd love to have gotten those 5K LG Ultrafine monitors, but I don't want to spend that much even if I financed it on my Apple Card. Those are the difference between this upgrade costing me about $1,400 (Mac mini and trade-in value of iMac + two $500 BenQ screens) and it costing me $3,000 if I did the LG's. I'm anxious to see what new displays Apple introduces this year based on the rumors of a more affordable screen, but I doubt those will be less than $1K, so the BenQ's still feel like the most cost-effective option out there.
- If you had just got the Dell, you would only have one cable connected for power, video and power passthrough. The Dells have chargers for USB-C and A built in.monospaced

I have a M1 13" MBP + 27" LG 5K display for work and a M1 Mac Mini at home with 24" LG 4K at home. It's not a flex and I'd rather be off the grid but if anyone wants to know anything about how Creative Suite runs on both and the various bugs / issues let me know.

Alright... updates.
Got everything set up last night and still evaluating and tinkering. So many f'ing cables... I can see the advantage of USB-C / Thunderbolt monitors but once everything's set up, the extensive wires are an afterthought. I never had to draw a flow chart for a computer setup before, and had to with this just to keep track of stuff. Going to need to get some things to secure these cables to my desk and the back of monitors because I can't stand wire mess
Just about all my Logic Pro plugins are up and running except for SoundToys V5 plugins, which will eventually be updated and I think I can do without.
My Apogee Duet recording interface software doesn't work yet, but it works in Logic Pro just fine in core audio, so not a big deal. The software is pretty much set it and forget it.
Creative Cloud app is not working properly. I'm trying to download the Photoshop beta for Big Sur / M1 and the CC app freezes every time I click even one thing. Can't browse my work, or anything else. It just freezes.
Other frustrations: I have an external web cam connected to monitor 2, which is connected to my work laptop via USB-C > USB-B cable. That makes the web cam work. I thought I'd be able to go from the Mac mini with a USB-C > USB-B to monitor 2 and access the web cam, but for whatever reason it doesn't detect it when I try to start up a video chat. Not sure if this is a deal-breaker... I don't do much video chatting via my main computer.
I've got the Mac mini connected to both monitors (USB-C to DisplayPort for left monitor, HDMI > HDMI for the right monitor) and can do dual monitors easily with the mini, simply toggling the right monitor between HDMI and DisplayPort.
The BenQ screens also daisy chain, but that requires going from DisplayPort out to DisplayPort in, which can't be done due to current configuration. So, I'm thinking about getting a USB-C to mini display port to go from Mini to left monitor for dual monitors, and then Display Port out from right monitor to DisplayPort In to daisy chain the work laptop for dual monitors. I don't use dual monitors much for work, but it would be nice to have the option.
In the end I'm bound to have some cables to send back to Amazon; the BenQ only came with USB-A cables so that doesn't really cut it.
Annoying: On Big Sur, why did they move the "new tab" button to be beside the address bar, and not at the right of the right-most tab? This is so stupid and counter-intuitive.

The BenQ monitors feel smaller due to the lack of huge Apple bezel and iMac chin at the bottom. BenQ's feel more fluid going from monitor to monitor, which is nice.
Love that the BenQ monitors are matte. Forgot how much easier that was on the eyes. Also really happy they can be raised and lowered. That was always a flaw of the iMac and Apple monitors. So, now I've got two 4k screens, which is a downgrade from the iMac, but also an upgrade from the Thunderbolt monitor.
Lastly, I HATE THAT EXTERNAL WEB CAM RUINING THE SYMMETRY TWO MONITORS but I will get over it. It's a 4k camera and vastly better picture than any Apple FaceTime camera. I think I'm going to take it off the top and just put it below the right monitor.

Question, on what resolution do you guys work on your external display?
Work with a developer who is complaining about my settings. I prefer my screen settings to be a bit smaller which ends up that my design is getting blown up on his screen. He is working with the default settings. Are there any solutions regarding this problem?
- If that's on a 27" display, it's kinda low resolution. Go up one or two levels. I run my 27" at 3360x1890monospaced
- 2560 x 1440 is the highest my 27" iMac will go to. My additional 19" HP external is 1440 x 900 but is basically just a pallettes / email screen. You carry on.Hayzilla
