I'd say PC if you work in mainly 3D or Web - or your office/workplace use PC.
Otherwise go mac. The case, OS, keyboard, trackpad etc. make for a very nice experience imo. When have to use a PC laptop they always feel so plasticky, clunky and annoying.

sony has one for £ 1,708.99 inc. VAT also. (VAIO Z (X) Series)

Sorry to take another longer term perspective here, but what is it exactly that you do? I think you mentioned that you are a lecturer, hence the education discounted pricing, but I don't remember.
Regardless, the OS on the box is irrelevant - what software you use is unlikely to be OS dependent; possible, but in this day and age not likely. So, long term reliability and price differential could be the essential factors. Apple hardware is nicely assembled and built with premium core infrastructure - I suspect it will simply last longer. The 600 pound pricing spread is significant though and unless you are literally drop testing your box on a regular basis I would suggest that amount of money could be put to very good use.
One last thought - you got family welfare to contribute to, then the answer is obvious.
Good luck!

Somehow, some way, i would like to see you back that up.mg33

My mbp had to be replaced twice last year, the battery lasts 1 hour and it crashes on a daily basis. My win box's crashed once or twice in 5 years. That said...
...op, why the hell are you asking us what you should choose?
Go with whatever os you feel comfortable with and whatever os you have software for. Photoshop looks about the same in both, where I assume you'd be spending more time with than anything else.

I still use a 6 year-old G4 powerbook, though the battery is essentially useless nowadays. Would you get as long a life out of your Sony?
You are also overspec'd in some regards, half of the Sony/Apple prioce difference is RAM upgrade, about another half is the top spec CPU. Apple RAM is very expensive, cheaper to buy with 4Gb and replace it with 8Gb from Crucial for less than the Apple upgrade. Also in benchmarks there is bugger all difference between the lowest and highest end CPUs http://www.notebookcheck.net/Rev…

Yeah a lecturer but that's not what I use it for - Illustration, design, publishing, photography. I'll have a good few large images open at any time, across 2/3 Adobe progs. I just want something with a decent sized HD for local storage, and fast enough so I don't have to wait too long each time I do something to an image.
The list above is interesting - Dell so high, never really rated them, seem so corporate. I do want something that looks / feels nice too.
I'm not asking you to decide for me, just asking opinions really.

I second the screen size post from the first page. I bought a 17" powerbook (piece of shit) because I thought it would be useful for designing when on site with agencies but it's a brick.
I'd go for the sony every time, it doesn't look as fancy perhaps but £600 is a lot of cash, you could buy a decent TV or something with the difference.

the only reasons to go pc are if you are on a tight budget or into gaming.
a vaio is the same price as a mac so go dell or go mac.
end of.

Yea just go with what you like mate. If look is important then go with the MBP. If you want to save a few moneys, then the VAIO is for you. If you like Windows more than OSX, then Sony it is then. Windows 7 is good actually.
But... if you want to run both you can go with the MBP and dual boot. :) That's what I do. hehe.
- VAIOs are expensive and design-wise often Mac rip-offs. There's no problem running Windows on a Mac.raf

After using Macs for so long (and windows before that) going back to Windows always feels like a flimsy kids toy, piece of shit doesn't even have a decent command line, font rendering is awful and still get window tearing all over the shop
