Sorry to take another longer term perspective here, but what is it exactly that you do? I think you mentioned that you are a lecturer, hence the education discounted pricing, but I don't remember.
Regardless, the OS on the box is irrelevant - what software you use is unlikely to be OS dependent; possible, but in this day and age not likely. So, long term reliability and price differential could be the essential factors. Apple hardware is nicely assembled and built with premium core infrastructure - I suspect it will simply last longer. The 600 pound pricing spread is significant though and unless you are literally drop testing your box on a regular basis I would suggest that amount of money could be put to very good use.
One last thought - you got family welfare to contribute to, then the answer is obvious.
