Tipping at Starbucks

Chain, counter-service organizations like Starbucks or McDonalds should neither require or impose upon the customer to tip. The hardest these people work is to hit a couple of fucking buttons, swirl a cup around and more frequently than not put up with some douchebag having special needs. I will -never- tip these people...
That being said, if I were to walk into a coffee house where the atmosphere was more of a dining establishment or bar (ie: being waited on) I would have no problem tipping. I worked in food service for a number of years and can tell you from firsthand experience those jobs can be both taxing physically and mentally stressful (think carrying huge trays of food and putting up with the most ridiculous requests).
Fuck tipping at a Starbucks.
- *er..
People working in a restaraunt are generally WORKING for tips... not just expecting handouts on top of hourly wagesd_rek - handouts on top of hourly wagesd_rek
- Please tell me how being a bartender is so much more different than mixing drinks at Starbucks and McDonalds.juhls
- I mean, really, when I worked those types of jobs they were horrendous.juhls
- but SHOULD I tip as much as the guy with the weird requests?jimbojones

I have a tendency to give a dollar everytime I order a beer at a bar. I don't go to Starbucks.

there is a big difference between making minimum wage or more and just hoping to split the tip jar at night, or making a living off your tips.
i have worked in both waitressing and awful food counter jobs, we were never allowed to put tip jars out, i find tip jars rude and unnecessary. if you make minimum wage or more and want more money then get another job! on the other hand tipping a waitress or bartender is not an option that is their pay and your fucking delusional if you think you have a choice to tip them or not.

I still don't understand how waiters don't get proper salaries. I feel like this happens more in the U.S.A. than in other places, because I don't feel the need to go around tipping every single person out there. I mean, if you're tipping a bartender, should you be tipping a person who works at Starbucks? Maybe the wages over there suck (maybe here too, and I just don't know), but it should not just be the customer's burden (not that it's a huge deal to tip, but people should think about who to tip and who not to more often). I have worked in a various parts of the service industry and I know that many people will give you your money back if you attempt to tip them.
- I have had shit, shit jobs where tipping would've been nice, but it's not expected. That's the difference.juhls
- I know I sound harsh here, but there needs to be a change in the actual system as well.juhls
- How people don't make minimum wage is just baffling to me.juhls
- welcome to america. have a nice day.sigg
- come on, tippin is common everywhere, not only america. the whole world is fucked up...jimbojones
- It is common, but in some cities it's a bit ridiculous. Where you have to tip every person you come across.juhls
- I don't want to harm the workers in any way, but I don't think people realize that some ppl never get tipped.juhls
- and they do harder work than waiters and bartenders.juhls
- I mean, from what I know. Can't generalize too much...juhls

I typically do not tip anyone but bartenders and waiters/waitresses. They are working for sub-minimum wages because that's how that industry works. I made $2.13 an hour waiting tables in college - what is it at these days?
I just don't believe in tipping someone for doing a job that does not require them to really go out of their way to serve me, AND one in which they are making at least the national minimum wage for any job. Taking an order and serving a coffee, or, hell, making some double-whip latte blah blah blah is exactly what they signed up to do, and it can be done with little need for displaying emotion or making sure I'm happy.
Does this make sense?

federal minimum wage in US will $7.25 an hour by the end of this month
minimum wage for wait staff is $2.13 an hourbig difference.

I once ripped a starbucks mug.
that was my tip for drinking there.

It makes sense, but I believe that you have no self-respect in these jobs. That's not really a judgement, as I was there before too. It's more of a statement about how you are treated and how you take crap from other people.
"Taking an order and serving a coffee, or, hell, making some double-whip latte blah blah blah is exactly what they signed up to do, and it can be done with little need for displaying emotion or making sure I'm happy."
"exactly what they signed up to do" doesn't make much sense to me. In most of these jobs, you're serving a customer, and you better do it well. I don't think there is a huge discrepancy between being a waiter and working at Starbucks (let's say) when it comes to what someone "expects" the job will be like.
And: people always complained to me about how I wasn't happy enough for them.

the one time i remember not giving a tip was in NYC i had a very effeminate yet racist waiter. he insulted my friend who happened to be black. it was really uncomfortable. it was bizarre too as i expected a homosexual to be more understanding as they also have to deal with bigotry and hate on a daily basis, yet here was this flaming prick, completely stuck up and blatantly intolerant of blacks.
someone had handed me a scientology pamphlet on the street while walking to the restaurant. that was his tip.
- Like usa only has one black guy eh.. I wohld have handed out a douche card! What a gaydouche********

Just to clarify: I do tip people, of course. I'm more interested in how you can really determine who to tip and who to not tip, when you could argue that some of the tasks involved in those jobs are similar. I suppose people are basing it purely on whether or not you have a consistent and normal pay-cheque, but there are some discrepancies there.

I only tip at restaurants and Vegas...
- Point50
nobody has to tip. It is what you give as a token of appreciation. if that fucking latte is fantastic this time around, or they gave you a large instead of a small because you're a regular, maybe you appreciate it and you feel like tipping. fuck, maybe you don't. as a former bartender, barback, security host, etc., I appreciated the hell out of tips because that's how I made my living; so I provided the best service possible for the customer. and for every asshole that didn't tip me on a 7 drink order or $300 bar tab, there was someone who'd drop me a $100 tip for making the 3 best shots they'd had yet on their trip to Vegas.
