What are your thoughts and practices on tipping at counter service joints in general?
I'm still hesitant, and generally won't unless the clerk/server has done or made something requiring more effort, or I've been in a number of times and haven't tipped in a while. Sort of like a cumulative tip. But only if the service is always friendly and hassle free.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big tipper at restaurants and any other service based trade where tipping is the norm. But counter service at a franchise, really?

139% is the general rule for tipping

Tipping should not be the fucking norm, bash me, but the employer should simply pay fair money and not rely on strangers.

- just stop tipping, they will go nuts, demonstrate and then obama will CHANGE itjimbojones

I usually throw in a buck. Mainly because I've worked at a coffee house.

I just paid $2 for you to take a cup and fill it with regular coffee that probably costs the company 10 cents total....sorry no tip from me.
- actually cost on average 47 cents per cuputopian
- company wins, employee's fuckedjimbojones
- There's no way it costs Starbucks that much per cup. And even if it did, that's still a 300% markup.designbot

What about when you pick up food curbside at a restaurant and the girl comes out with the food and delivers it to your car. Do you/Should you tip her 15%-20% like you would a server at dinner?

Depends on effort. If they just poured coffee vs actually making a drink as in Tall Short Light Skinny Orange Mocha Frappachino in a grande cup.

I agree. It does seem a little strange. I hardly ever go to Starbucks, but if I'm ever in there, I won't usually tip.

actually this issue confuses the hell out of me. i feel uncomfortable tipping (but I do of course, oh boundaries of civilization) because I know that the orange juice I order already costs me 5 times of what I'd pay if I bought it in a bottle. And then tipping, on top of that, and the more I eat, the more I have to tip, and the more expensive my food is, the more I have to tip, but the SERVICE is the SAME - bring it to me! I ask myself, why the fuck would I accept a job which does not pay enough and I have to ask everyone how they are doing and annoy the hell out of them if I want to survive this month. Begging is at least honest... Besides, I really hate TRADITIONS some half assed morons started, which I have to follow for some reason.
Generally I only tip if something is brought to me. But that's their fucking job anyway, isn't it?!

how about at a bar when the bartender pops a cap off? 1 dollar? I usually do, just because I have friends who do that job and could use it, so I figure most are in the same boat. Don't really feel that a coffee or a beer is worth an extra dollar though.
I happily tip a buck when the drink requires more effort though.

i can't see tipping anyone at a starbucks. they earn a full time wage as opposed to a waiter or waitress who rely on tips to make a living. sure, who wouldn't love to have more money just handed to them? it would be like me putting a tip jar on my desk so that anyone that asked me to update something on the website could toss in a couple bucks...
actually, wait... that's not a terrible idea...
