While in Boston on business this week, I left $2 on the edge of my bed as a tip to the maids, and I could tell that the bed was just a bit more fluffy when I finally climbed in at night.

- When I travel I leave $5 every morning for the cleaning people. I thought that was customary.Josev

*wait's for the "Tripping at Starbucks" parody thread.

Not going to Starbucks at all would remove the need to tip them and no longer would you have to endure bland buckets of flavoured hot milk. With the money saved get a stovetop and a coffee grinder.
There's my tip.

STEREO"TIP"ICAL
good tippers: white males
crappy tippers: black males
non-tippers: europeans

i can tell you where i live its not too common to tip and the service is really lousy everywhere and people dont want to work.

I like that Tim Horton's (in Canada) doesn't have tip jars, they have donation jars for their kids camp program. Those get my change every time.
I don't tip at coffee shops (unless they are a Mom & Pop shop) and I don't tip when I pick up a pizza. Delivery, sure, they are doing me a service, but when I pick it up, they should tip me :)

Fuck tipping.
And fuck the "you obviously never worked in a service industry" rhetoric. I was a busboy and the bitchy waitresses always pocketed that shit. Fuck using a tip as a rubric for good service. I don't feel I should have to be obligated to give an extra dollar because someone did their job properly. Bring it up with your boss if you think you deserve more.
The only time I tip, actually, is when I think someone's gonna get mad if i don't, like in a bar, where I don't want to get kicked out etc. It's an act of cowardice, and I feel that way every time i shell out a hard earned sawbuck to some douchebag beerjerk.
Fuck tipping.

The girl is cute ?
Yes : Tip like there's no tomorrow
No : Don't look at her and don't tip and don't say thank you

I tip 15% at a restaurants, period. I just treat it like it's part of the menu price. And I always tip my change at coffee shops.
These are places that I go to on a regular basis, and they remember me. Now when I order at my favorite Sushi restaurant I get REALLY good service and the chef always gives me extra rolls for free.
It's called karma, and it pays dividends.

yeah, i dont tip at starbucks. unless, they make me a super crazy awesome drip...but thats their job..no?
- it is their job, but they can always cut corners and do a shittier job than usual.Point5

If I remember right, Starbucks doesn't give you a place to tip on the receipt.
So I hardly ever tip @ Starbucks because I don't usually pay with cash.
But usually I go to the local place instead, and throw them $1` tip for a $2 coffee. Why not?

never tip them. I once had a Starbucks person put the tip cup RIGHT in front of me several times to give me a hint.

Actually, when I go and I end up waiting for them to finish their conversation before they even acknowledge me, I just take a dollar OUT of their tip jar for my time. :)

"Tipping should not be the fucking norm, bash me, but the employer should simply pay fair money and not rely on strangers."
A lot of this prick ass owners don't believe it this way. They "believe" the more you work the more you make, which is a big gigantic pile of bullshit. If you don't believe me ask the asshole financial sector that has the whole world on its knees.

Yeayea blame the europeans. Atleast we have fit waitresses over here! And we invented fucking french fries!! Wivh are actually from velgium
and prostitution is legal
- pango0
same here. was a bus boy once. i worked my butt of while the waitresses stood in the corner and chat. in the end of the day they still get more tips.
i only tip when they earned it or if i had special request.

Like what special request

Tipping at Starbucks is pointless because the tip jar is next to the cash register. So you tip BEFORE they give you any service. I generally throw some change into the jar when I buy a coffee (50 cents or whatever is in my pocket) but it seems like half the time they forget my order, which pisses me off. And I only ever order a tall coffee.

if you work in the service industry, why would you want to make a decent hourly or salary wage? Here, the service industry is about making what you work for. Nobody would work for $30k-$40k when they can make $60k-$100k+ instead by working for tips.
- this applies to nightlife service industry of course... ain't no coffee that good at Starbucks
