I'm not a hater (well, sometimes...), I have nothing against fixies, what upset me is the whole trend.
If some of you read WAD -trend & fashion magazine- guess what? this month there's a fixie on every pages ; in denim adverts, in articles etc etc...I guess it's going the same way in other street fashion magazines.
All that made by people who don't care about bikes, 6month ago they've never heard or cared about those bikes. never put their ass in a bike since they are 15, because it wasn't cool anymore.
I'm sure that during the nest fashion event, I'll ear people speaking on their stand, near a fixie "yeah, it's a fixed gear bike, it's really better, you feel the road, It's like surfing the streets you know"- it's like triangles. I have nohing against this shape. but I see it in every poster now. meaningless.dyspl

I have a single speed for the city. My rationale for buying it was: a) carrying it up the stairs and b) why pay for what you don't need - there is absolutely no need for 18 speeds in the city because you can never get a rhythm going to cruise along in top gear.
And the small frame geometry is super nimble.
That being said no brakes is just stupid... I've heard the "it gives me more control" argument and I'm not buying it - when a car turns in front of you and cuts you off, I'm pretty sure you'd be hoping for brakes.
I wouldn't care if my taxes didn't pay for your hospital visit.

But seriously, part of the early appeal of fixes was the anti-bike-shop edge, you had to find an old road bike frame with the right horizontal dropouts, then find a bike mechanic who would find the right parts and convert it into a fixie, or do it yourself after lots of reading webstuff..... storebought fixies were like being a punk guitar player with a brand new stratocaster from guitar center...
- i think i would get into building one up myself... i just am a bit new to the game********
- A complete bike is worth less than the sum of it's parts separately.MSTRPLN

gears weigh a few hundred grams. If you have a bike with gears, you can start off a lot quicker when you have to stop.
Trust me no fixie has ever diced me.. they only dice with death when they shoot into busy traffic cos the cant bloody stop!! (and no im not one of the self-righteous "hey the light's red!" idiots.. but I do stop when there are buses and heavy traffic involved)
- Well, that is purely up to the individual.. not the object.non

Obviously you're set on this and nobody is talking you out of it, but get a flip-flop hub for when you decide that coasting is actually pretty OK and think conservative when selecting wheel color - silver will still be cool 2 years from now.
- version30
get at least one accent color, like all white with a blue wheel or all black with a red wheel
have at least some fun with it

yeah but you also have to have under consideration they colorfull cloth make up packs of newports and hair product cost... to achive the whole look i mean

If you ride a light fixed, you may very well go faster.
but if you a big old heavy mountain bike with thick wheels, you'll have to work twice as hard to get any speed (although the gain in weight may help you go faster down hill, and you'll have decent brakes to stop at the bottom of the hill).
Consequentially you'll be fitter and stronger than your fixed wheeled hipster.
And so the current fixed wheeled hipster trend can be reversed engineered:
heavy mountain bicycle or geared bicycle = need to be fitter = bigger leg muscles = rip your skin tight jeans to shreds.
The solution, an extremely light cycle.
And so we can see how it all came about.
Don't blame the bicycle. Blame the wearing of your little sisters trousers (pants for you US folks).

DrBombay:
Every week this topic comes up. I have no problem with people riding whatever they like. The bullshit about the brakes is what bugs me. Sorry but merely having brakes isn't going to fuck up your zen-like ride you pretentious cocks.I am going to post this up here every time a new thread comes up.

brakes add weight & reduce cool

One would think that the hipsters leading the pack have denounced fixed gear road bikes and gone with a 64 geared system with cantilever brakes and disk brakes both installed.
Safety and comfort is the new black.

- love Campy parts!vaxorcist
- I converted a Pogliaghi frame, how stupid is THAT!non
- Oh, and just wait until the new trend is all about late 70s/early 80s campy parts and italian frames... Oh wait.. that already happenednon
- happennednon
- Sadly, you're right. Let's hope the rarity of these frames/components keeps a growing trend at bay.metal_leg_will
- Hmmm... Look at japanese track stuff (samson, 3rensho). Rarity only brings more attention it seems.non

what astounds me is the amount of hate in this thread as if he isn't spending his own money
