I have a single speed for the city. My rationale for buying it was: a) carrying it up the stairs and b) why pay for what you don't need - there is absolutely no need for 18 speeds in the city because you can never get a rhythm going to cruise along in top gear.
And the small frame geometry is super nimble.
That being said no brakes is just stupid... I've heard the "it gives me more control" argument and I'm not buying it - when a car turns in front of you and cuts you off, I'm pretty sure you'd be hoping for brakes.
I wouldn't care if my taxes didn't pay for your hospital visit.
