in general the whole "hipster" shit on culture of the board lately. i've wanted for about a year and riding one here in wichita ks, i'm sure i'd be one of 4 people on one. i want one for the somewhat effortless ride, i mean pedals and a top speed of 35ish? that's fucking effort compared to my motorcycle

how the fuck does a bike with no gears or brakes cost more than $150?!
- Yeah, most of the frames are chromoly too. WHY!?!Andrew_D

ok so... i think i want to get a single gear bike.... with a brake... but a custom one... thats what i got outta this thread
- And you can even two brakes!hellogrid
- *havehellogrid
- If you have a freewheel, you need both brakes, can only run a front only set up on fixedDesignedbyDave
- Custom will set you back a hell lot more than 500$... Unless you mean "cheap" custom.non
- i have an old 70's track bike... i might just try to redo********

Building up a bike can get expensive real quick, I'd go to some bike shops, talk to the guys who work there, try out some bikes, see what size frame fits you best and go from there. If you don't see anything, you can pick up a used bike with decent components, ride it for a while and if you still don't like the gears, convert it into a single-speed. For $500 you should be alright.

Even with a beater frame, you're still looking at about minimum $600 with parts and installation from a bike shop.
If you're going custom, have someone build you a frame and build it up from there. But you're looking at minimum $1500 there.
SE Bikes, Schwin and a few others make entry level single speed/fixed gear bikes that run under $500 (at least here in the Twin Cities). Those are probably your best bets.
Surly makes the Steamroller which is a bit over that $500 mark, but you get what you pay for also.

I was a bit of an over-reactionary douche earlier in the thread. Upon reflection I would like to apologize for the tone of my responses. I do not apologize however for my opinion of people who buy these stupid bikes because of the influence and sheer weight of social conformity hiding as rebellion poser chic that is the general lot of many. That said, if you have a real reason to purchase and use and enjoy one of these fixed gear bikes, you just keep rocking with your bad self.

There's nothing that a nonconformist hates more than another nonconformist who doesn't conform to his standard of nonconformity
(I think Mark Twain said this 200 years ago)- Well, other than hating the general mill conformists.TheBlueOne
- e-pill0
i said it in a note but blue, you should come to brooklyn and get drunk with me on a night of heavy single malts cups and we can go drunk riding into groups of williamsburg hipsters!!!
come on you know more than anything you want that, we can attach my boombox to the frame and crank metallica as we crave thru the skinny jeans and white studded belts!!!!
i think this can be a new trend!!!
drunk riding into hipsters!!!!
eh???
- OK...but I'd rather play something hipsters would really hate...like maybe blasting The Police or Cheap Trick something...TheBlueOne
