Speaking of fixies. I just put a new bike together, and I wanted to strip down my old bike, but I'm having serious issues removing the friggin manufacturer's stickers. Any advice for removing these without chipping the original paint job?
- I've always used "Goo Gone" the orange shit. It still takes some elbow grease and a couple of hours of work.peddy28isgreat
- yeah, try goo gone or goof off. definitely test it on an inconspicuous spot first. make sure it doesn't mess up the paint.Chief

^ well first, verify that they're not under a clearcoat which is often the case. if they are in fact on top of the paint, acetone will take them off.

finally picked up a safari 10 by univega this past weekend from my neighbor for free! she needs some work but I was surprised that it still worked fine even after sitting for 10+ years. Heres what others look like... I'll post after photos when I'm done with it!

I've been on bikes in Manhattan for almost three years. If you ride a bike in NYC without brakes, you have a death wish, plain and simple. Also, with the stopping and starting in the city, it follows that you need the lower gears. The city is not flat. It's higher in the middle of manhattan, slopes down as you go downtown in the 30s.
I'm riding to DUMBO now from the Lower East Side and going over the Manhattan Bridge everyday. Tell me what fun it is getting up that bridge without gears.

I was away last weekend in Cape May. Our B&B had these "vintage" fixie bicycles you could just take to ride around the island. I can't even begin to tell you how much I hated the fucking things. You'd pedal flat out for two minutes, get a bit of speed and then stop pedaling and you'd grind to a crawl. Braking was the suck. And when you braked, you're feet ended up in the wrong position to apply pressure to the pedals to start up again. It was just madness. I do not understand the trend for these outdated pieces of shit technology.

I could care less about the whole hipster element. I don't have one, but i have wanted one for the simple reason that there's so little to go wrong with one. If it were cheap I wouldn't mind keeping it locked up outside or letting it get a little beat up. I have a decent mountain bike, a Specialized Rockhopper, but I don't ride it around my neighborhood just to get around. I use it more when camping or for longer rides in the city.
I think it would be great to just have something simple to get around with. It's flat here in Chicago, one gear wouldn't be that bad.
The only two things I'd do differently would be to have a freewheel and a brake on the back. That front brake stuff is absurd.
- front break is great for climbing anything. and using both is powerful.erikjonsson
- Actually a front break is better for stopping a bike.

of all the bike issues I've had with all the bikes I've ever owned, gears were never a problem. Brakes, yes, but aside from minor adjustments, everything else is easy maintenance.

- Go for it... if you want a bike made of scaffolding quality steel.rounce
- doubt he's going to be racing a few extra ounces...big deal. They are cheap and durable, what's wrong with that?********

I rode from London to Brighton this weekend with a few mates. Did it fixed; 56 miles, hills and all. It was hard from around the 25 mile mark – or when we got out of London, and i ended up pushing up the massive hill before you get to Brighton (Ditchling Beacon). The other lads made it up there but i was finished!
Fixies are wicked for urban riding but i was hankering after some gears and a freewheel after a while...
That said I reckon I want to give the NYC century ride a crack on a fixed!
