If you ride a light fixed, you may very well go faster.
but if you a big old heavy mountain bike with thick wheels, you'll have to work twice as hard to get any speed (although the gain in weight may help you go faster down hill, and you'll have decent brakes to stop at the bottom of the hill).
Consequentially you'll be fitter and stronger than your fixed wheeled hipster.
And so the current fixed wheeled hipster trend can be reversed engineered:
heavy mountain bicycle or geared bicycle = need to be fitter = bigger leg muscles = rip your skin tight jeans to shreds.
The solution, an extremely light cycle.
And so we can see how it all came about.
Don't blame the bicycle. Blame the wearing of your little sisters trousers (pants for you US folks).
