I thought the Antikythera mechanism was still a mystery, with the general idea that it was a calculator of some kind, but I guess they solved it a few years ago.

Happy Mother's Day!
Don't forget to call/visit her today.
Remember when your whole world was Mom? Teens (13–17) trade those hours for friends. At 18, college cuts it in half. In your 20s, work and relationships take over. After 30 it’s down to an hour a month. When’s the last time you reached out to her?

Just became a TV Academy voting member (based on my commercial work) which is a nice life development. After focusing on digital for most of my career, I finally have enough broadcast commercial work to join in the club.
But my career transformation is not yet compete. Finished my second comedy half hour pilot, submitting to a big writer’s fellowship. Part of me is scared I won't get in. The other part — afraid I will.

I can't believe it was only today that I realized you can assign an F key as a shortcut for a screenshot on Mac OS.
I've always used a screenshot plugin called MonoSnap, but I can't install that at work, so I have to use the default controls. It's so annoying to do Shift Cmd Control 4 to take a screenshot to the clipboard. All good now with a simply click of F6.
- *Aptly called Monday Snappalimpsest
- Fucking autocorrect!
*Aptly called MonoSnap.palimpsest - Wait until you find out you can have it save screenshots anywhere you want other than the desktop. It’ll blow your mind.monospaced

These past few months, I've discovered what it's like to live with pain (I've been dealing with shoulder tendonitis for months and a severe crash to my ribs a month ago), and I think I know what aging is, and I'm not enjoying it!!
And the lack of sun and the eternal humidity of my country aren't helping matters.
Time to think of an escape plan to the south?
- bummer dude. i dislocated my shoulder a few years ago and know only too well how good the shoulder is at distributing pain around the body.hans_glib
- Ouch Hans, get well yo... and yes, I have a doctor's appointment today and we'll see if we can resolve this. I don't sleep well even on my back, argh!!OBBTKN
- exercises are the key to recovery, for the shoulder anyway. resting your arm on a firm pillow to support the damaged shoulder helps sleep a bit.hans_glib
- ribs i guess heal with time?hans_glib

Still on the jobhunt.
This week has felt a bit better as had two interviews and another potentially next week.
Today I had a call with a talent recruiter from a top bank that I'd applied to but not got the position. He was giving me feedback on why I wasn't chosen. CV, folio, skillset etc all on point. Only thing I lacked was native app experience.I'd like my next role to be fintech/crypto related and most require native app experience.
Without getting a job for the next few years working on an app platform to get the experience, do you think like doing the kind of case studies where you fix a problem in a current app you use and having that in my folio would cut it?
I'm kinda thinking they are moreso looking for the real world experience, knowing about restrictions, native UI's etc.
But aren't these skills pretty transferrable?I spent the last 5 years as lead UX product designer with no prior 'product' experience, but 20 years experience in agencies doing web/digital across many sectors/industries to call on so I could hit the ground running.
Good to hear thoughts from native app designers.
- Should I have posted that in the Gen X Career Meltdown thread? ;)microkorg
- If you need "native app experience" go with iOS, much easier to stick to the guidelines.
Android is a mess rn design wise...grafician - Do you think doing some homegrown projects and having them in my portfolio would be enough? Or u think they are looking for actual experiencemicrokorg
- working on native apps, with devs etc and to restrictions/guideli...microkorg
- Usually they mean exactly that - real work experience - but having self-promo projects is very good (for direct clients)grafician
- But getting feedback from talent recruiters is fuck'all
Try to apply directly to companies, not go through middlegrafician - Problem these days is they are getting back to office or hybrid work, fully remote jobs are scarce againgrafician
- Graf, the guy was in-house talent recruiter, not a third party one.
Need to get me some native app experience.microkorg - You mean HR?
Sorry but unless you deliver fully developed apps you aren't getting those kind of jobs
Which is bs
But hey good luckgrafician - Cheers mate. I agree. Designers skills are 100% transferrable. And you could learn any systems/software with a heads-down for a few weeks in a job.microkorg
- Sure, we can manage faster than the HR can vet the CVs
For some companies it's like 5-6 rounds of interviews and months of time wastedgrafician

Health issues in a family is a huge burden... Please hug your close ones and enjoy every moment you have with them, don't engage in petty ego discussions, life is so fucking short.

Really getting back into dance music. Fucking love it.
I started going to Nowadays in Queens on Sunday mornings for the early sessions. I get up at 6am, in the club by 7am, a little smoke, a little weirdness for a few hours and back home.
I'm 43 and really am comfortable being the older guy in the club – more than i thought. Its funny how even after 30 years of going to raves, it still has the same appeal. Nowadays has a no phone policy which is amazing and actually makes the place feel timeless. The BPMs are faster than they used to be, and there are more trans folks around than there were in the north of England in the late 90s but on the whole, its comforting to know that people are still dancing in dark rooms to pounding dance music.

- Are you going sober? Or wake and bake and shake?_niko
- That's great. There's been a big daytime rave / over 30s rave thing here in Ireland for the last couple of years.mort_

- daytime dancing? shit yeah! go git 'embezoar
- I've got friends that go to day raves. Specifically targetted at the old skool crowdmicrokorg
- Old people day rave sounds awesome! Party before sunset, and still in bed by 9pm? Fuck yeah.Akagiyama
- Straight edge partying intrigues me...ideaist
- that little smoke takes off the edge...or gives u the edge...neverscared
- as long as u stay in the groove both works...neverscared
- Wake and bake and then zero alcohol athletic beers! Enough to be 'in the spirit', not too much to feel it for days afterwards.DaveO
- I must stress that this is not a 'brunch rave' or 'sober clubbing' – its just a 24 hour venue where I go in the morning! Like Panorama or Berghain in essenceDaveO
- true u have to stress.... day raves are not the edge...neverscared
- everything about this post is amazing, you've even rumbled some alts.garbage
- Heard people still get mad out of it at day raves lol.mort_
