The Breakfast Club is a shitty movie. Change my mind. No seriously. How is this such a classic?
- I think you have to convince people that it's shitty first.monospaced
- The movie's thesis is trying to be that these kids aren't just typical stereotypes: jock, nerd, popular, weirdo. But all it does is reaffirm that. it fails.sarahfailin
- Also there are a ton of loose ends that aren't tied up. That teacher poking around the records. Kids break the glass door, fall through the ceiling.sarahfailin
- I hated how the dolled up the artist girl at the end. Fuck that.sarahfailin
- IMO, it succeeds. Detention exposed their similarities, not their differences. And reality sets in at the end, which is what HS is really like.monospaced
- Most 80s movies are now corny when you rewatch them as an adult. Better to keep them as a fond memory. LolHijoDMaite
- it was new, fresh and cutting edge at the timemugwart
- Maybe ask a 16 year old girl.
At this point its a time capsule
I prefer 400 blows sometimes.docpoz - Ask any 80s kid why it’s good.monospaced
- I watched it at the cinema as a 14yr old on a triple date. It captures the zeitgeist of the time and along with St Elmo's Fire ar still two my favourite films..Morning_star
- ...Critically and technically it's winning no oscars. But...'You see it as you want to see it, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. ;)Morning_star
- I'm 46, so it came out when I was pretty much the same age as the characters, or just about.... I loved it then, and still do.exador1
- obviously, it's dated in many ways, and the characters are just amalgamations of different 'types' from school etc...exador1
- but mono got it right. it showed that they had more in common than they thought, that their various faults and demons made them more relatable...exador1
- at the end of the day, it's fun, has a good soundtrack, the actors did a great job, and wtf...smoke up johnny!.....judd nelson was fucking hilarious....exador1
- How old are you? a big part of it is growing up around that time and having a nostalgia for it. Also it was unlike any teen movie at the time. Mostly talking_niko
- ..no action, one set pretty much, no explosions, no gratuitous tits. It was different. it was the anti-porky's._niko
- I was born in 85, so year after the movie came out. More of a Ferris Bueler generation maybe...sarahfailin

What happened to detritus?
He said in the London thread a while back:
"I spend a lot of time walking the streets (slut that I am) and am basically a nutter because I get in arguments weekly, because I DO say shit to people."

Anyone here into cyclocross? Drop bar off-road bikes? I've put plenty of miles under my ass on my Trek and Giant road bikes, but after a chance meeting with a cyclocross competitor, I was taken by the options to ride a similarly framed bike with more off road option (read: away from cars) and holy shite, the distances of some of these races span across multiple terrains... O,,o
I'd like to put new tires, maybe wheels, brakes, and tires on the Giant; but looking into possible budget purpose built models in the meantime such as the CAADX.

Where is QBN thread for personal sites? Shouldn’t we by now have a place to show off or get critique on the sites we use? I know there are the critique my site threads but maybe just one where we can dump everything in. Would that work?

how many of you are born and bred londoners?
i only ask because my daughter said an odd thing last night - she'd been described as a "unicorn" by someone she met. when asked what she meant, this girl said "i was told i'd probably never meet a real londoner, someone who's born and bred here - they're mythical..."
when i heard that i laughed and said "what nonsense", but the more i thought about it the more i realised that everyone i know was indeed born elsewhere. even at art school there were only two other londoners on the course.
i've never noticed before.
- A young Londoner who works at the studios here said much the same thing to me quite recently - she felt like she was a total minority.Nairn
- surely all the people now living in London having children will produce born-n-bred Londoners? Same as ever.Fax_Benson
- I'm sure there's been a demographic change in terms of 'traditional' Londoners moving out to Essex and Kent. But where did they come from?Fax_Benson
- I meant 'minority' in the numerative sense, not an ethnic one. I just realised this when I was outside, hacing a quick cig.Nairn
- Got stuck on the tube one evening in 2005 for an hour, Australian lad (drinking Fosters FFS) hypothesises loudly "Nobodies talking because they think...kingsteven
- they're the only one not from London" ... "but i'm not sure anyone here's from London". he went round the entire carriage asking folks, not one person even fromkingsteven
- England... conversations all over the place after that, not sure he was entirely right but an eye opener all the same.kingsteven
- depends where you are and what you're doing I guess.Fax_Benson
- Only got to know a few Londoners the 4 years I was there tbh.kingsteven
- Met a born and bread Londoner years ago, when I was in my 20's. His family had left London, hated it, changed too much. That was 20 years ago.shapesalad
- The only born&bred Ldn'r I met and befriended in 13y of living in LDN, emigrated to Australia.shapesalad
- When I used dating websites years ago, I was a rare find in LDN apparently, because I was English.shapesalad
- It is what it is, LDN. I still don't get it. Miserable weather, pollution, crime, expense, over crowded and half the world(3rd) wants to move there.shapesalad
- so often the case - most of my daughters' friends (from when they were younger )moved out to the home counties and beyond for schools and such.hans_glib
- what are you now?Fax_Benson
- one family told me they had had enough of hearing police helicopters all the time... :/hans_glib
- i'm not talking about english, just london. the guy who cuts my hair is a londoner, born and bred. his dad came over from cyprus, but he's stayed here, had kidshans_glib
- My wife was born in London, her dad lived in South London, left as it was a shithole where they lived. Loads of family still there though.PhanLo
- They say the same thing about Torontonians, and then you meet one. Not so mythical.ben_
- The only two people I'm close to beyond bloody foreigners here are both LDN born and bred; both have ambitions to leave over the next couple of yearsNairn
