"Cigarette smoke exposure and inflammatory signaling increase the expression of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2 in the respiratory tract"
https://www.cell.com/development…
- this seems to go against the idea we've heard that smokers are actually not that affected
- Who's shared the idea that smokers (and vapers) aren't "that affected?" Stop listening to that dumbass news source.MondoMorphic
- smokers being more affected was almost literally the first thing I heard about this virus back in January.monospaced
- When it was just reports from China.monospaced
- no way mono, smoking actually makes your lungs stronger, why do you think non smokers cough when they smoke?moldero
- im kidding btwmoldero
- Right. The idea it’s even questioned is worrying . It’s a respiratory issue that kills.monospaced
- Yeah, I quit smoking cuz of this, the original article think it was from dailymail so yeah...grafician
- But I remember even David Hockney having a laugh about this, am I wrong?grafician
- chew is the way to go
*spitsmoldero - reading this now, seems to cover well this subject https://slate.com/te…grafician
- and lol, looks like Hockney really did talked about thisgrafician
- I bet the quarantine was rough for you, grafician, quitting smoking on top of all the rest! Good job!MondoMorphic
- @Mondo Not really, already working remotely before. But really mad about not being able to go see my family out town for about 2 months...grafician
- ...plus many friends being jobless for now, gloomy economic situation. Quitting smoking was nothing compared to other more important issuesgrafician

The woman who created and ran Florida’s online coronavirus data site has been fired, just days after she said she fought the state Department of Health’s efforts to make the data harder to access for the public, researchers and the media.
Rebekah Jones, whose work to build the user-friendly COVID-19 Data and Surveillance Dashboard drew praise and publicity, said her commitment to maximum transparency resulted in her removal from the dashboard project. Then, days later, she lost her job.
Internal emails indicate Jones resisted when her bosses told her to remove the raw data from the website, meaning that users could no longer download it for analysis.
The data had just been downloaded and used by newspapers to report that sickness in Florida emerged as early as January, a fact that led some to second-guess whether Republican Govenor Ron DeSantis acted quickly enough to shut down the state.
In a May 4 email from Jones to Department of Health IT Director Craig Curry, she wrote: “I’m not pulling our primary resource for coronavirus data because he wants to stick it to journalists and make them copy and paste from the tables in the pdfs. If it’s in the dashboard, it’s public. Period. There is no way around that.

A well-known doctor from Uruguay told me today that he is quite concerned about a possible relapse in winter. Apparently in winter, the environments are less ventilated, people tend to clump more, and clothes are not washed as frequently as in hot seasons.
The fact that Uruguay is currently “the best in the class” is of little value if people let their guard down and companies return to normal just in the face of winter.
I can see a big relapse in some South American countries, and a significant worsening in global (South American) terms.

On the other hand, changing the subject... while working for Healthcare, preparing Launch Readiness Reviews and Q2 balances, I've seen little and nothing regarding COVID-19. It's almost as if big-pharma knew something that we don’t ... they have not changed their route even in 1cm.
- Explain more, in what ways they not changed?grafician
- They kept the same strategies, same route. COVID is almost unmentioned on every single marketing plan. As if it didn’t exist.maquito
- We’re talking about seriously “sensitive” info here. Projections, income, investment... not a single COVID parentheses.maquito
- What about vaccines, distribution? Anyway odd, but also changing strategies overnight for big pharma would be hard, maybe Q3-Q4 things will change more?grafician
- Idk, looks fishy imo. I would’ve thought big pharma companies should show some internal concern. The ones I actually work for don’tmaquito
- sure, but actually don't post inside stuff in the open man, it's odd as you say, but it's just your opinion I guessgrafician
- If you want my opinion, vaccines for COVID won’t give immunity, nor will “stop” the virus. It’ll be just like common flu vaccines.maquito
- Also, a more profound opinion is that millions will die from this coronavirus. Life is not as important as money.maquito
- probably because big pharma went out of vaccine market years ago. it‘s not where the money is.uan
- Big pharma isn't exactly front line for COVID response. I'm SURE if you were near a research hospital or ER it would be a totally different take.monospaced
- My wife works for a hospital network and it's all hands, all covid, all the time. All employees got a huge bonus and an extra week off for the extra work.monospaced
- Reason big pharma isn't changing much is because people still need meds, and they still have their revenue.monospaced
- Yeah, from what I read, most vaccine research is done by independent/smaller companies, maybe next year bigpharma will change numbers as they go to distributiongrafician
- There's no money if people don't get sick.Maaku
- @mono @Maaku yup.maquito
- @grafician kind of stuff I'd love to talk long and is really hard for me to put into words here.maquito

Paper from Korea - "Findings from Investigation and analysis of 108 re-positive cases"
TLDR: no actual viral particles, can't infect other people.
Seems to be many reasons why patients can test re-positive but getting it again and actually being symptomatic would be down to severe health/ immune problems or no longer having antibodies due to the time between infections.

- Idk, the spread seems random afgrafician
- Look at Greece numbers, between Italy and Turkey...how can that be explained?!grafician
- Greece population is about 10 million, spread out across the Agean. Italy / Turkey must be 50-60million?Fax_Benson
- but yeah, so much of it seems to be random - at the moment anyway. And Trump has a point about number of tests increasing case numbers.Fax_Benson
- Greece, somewhat like NZ, isn't a hub in any sense - it's an end destination. One of the reasons UK has such a high # is because of this.Nairn
- I tried to compare population density vs. size of country vs. measures taken, the numbers still don't make sensegrafician
- @Fax you're right, the numbers won't ever match a model until every person will be tested, but that'd be almost impossible for a whilegrafician
- About Trump, that point seems valid at first, but it's rather not, not every test is positive, not by far!grafician
- Anyway, since peak March 20% new cases, we are overall down to 2% new cases and still dropping, even a week after lockdowns liftedgrafician
- Italy has a culture of infantilised teens who all fled universities in the north to go visit family homes with Nonni living there.Nairn
- There're so many sad tales of kids skipping home through quarantine and then inadvertantly killing their grandparents :(Nairn
- In US 0.5% in Germany 0.3% in Italy, Spain, France 0.2%grafician
- You'll need at least 8 days after lockdown's lifted to see any change in RnNairn
- @Nairn seems right yeah, but here in RO we test about 12K with avg 200 new cases daily since start of May, even in lockdown and a week after now...grafician
- Anyway, overall we're avg 1.2% new cases, this spread points to stopping in under a month at this rate. What we'll do after this, second wave, next year = ???grafician

My father sent me this pic a few weeks back telling me he was cleaning hospitals in Chile. He has always held odd jobs and has been working for a cleaning company recently. A few days ago he found out he has COVID-19 after getting tested. He lives in a garage rental type situation with a young family, they’re currently waiting on their tests. He’s self isolating at his place, they gave him some medicine and told him to change his socks.

Should we all start taking hydroxychloroquine?
I'm guessing there is reason why Trump and other people think it works, this didn't come from nowhere.
- Only $25 for a month of treatment, maybe this is why the media downplays it so muchqoob
- there's yet no evidence that it helps - everything seems to be anecdotal. you might as well pray that god cures you while you're at it.dorf
- "this didn't come from nowhere"
lol, everything comes from nowhere.i_was - Why would you consider talking it? Genuinely curious.mort_
- It's all political for Trump. If it works, his MAGAtards will hail him a genius. If not, it'll just be forgotten. He can't lose.BusterBoy
- lol @ downvotesqoob
- A lot of doctors have said it works, the idea didnt come from Trumpqoob
- Clinical trials are ongoing. Some have shown a higher mortality rate with hydroxychloroquine use in hospitals and no positive effects.mort_

I see many clothing companies are making masks that are "not intended for medical use".
Are they just fabric? Do they protect you from anything?
- I believe yhat primarily they protect you from your fear of catching the virus.deadsperm
- They prevent you from sneezing out too much shit into the air. They're kind of detrimental in terms of protecting you, you end up touching your face more, etc.zarkonite
- because they're not medical grade, and they don't want to be sued for not meeting strict criteria of medical grade sanitized stuffmonospaced
- Really, it's because people are so fucking stupid they actually have to be told this isn't 100% effective. Some people are just that retarded.monospaced
- The intent of the mask if not to protect you, but is to protect others from you.utopian
- yup but most dont get that and i dont give a shit about protecting others from me if i feel fine. just waiting for the anti-mask hatersdeathboy
- Are most people really wearing masks for themselves or for the other though? My duty stops where my uncomfort begins.
Don't tread on me.deadsperm - they're wearing them for both, as it helps in both scenarios ... if you don't care you are probably just a selfish cuntmonospaced
- they keep the worst of the particulate from getting into the air and into other people, and onto other surfaces. obviouslymonospaced
