Saw it last night in IMAX. Absolutely amazing. Sets, costumes, visuals. The score was incredible, and the cast was top notch.

Seems part 2 is in the bag, I just hope it won't be too far away.

    • We need to rewatch it a few times just to make sure the studio goes ahead for sure with Part 2grafician
  • NBQ00-1

It also felt like a TV show if you split it in like 4 parts.

But then again it just shows how far TV shows have come and so close to cinema movies in terms of production quality.

    • Yeah. I kinda wish this was a 20 part series where they could really tell the story. I would have paid more for that. HW will come around to that soon.formed
    • The Expanse really showed (for me) how a series could have some pretty great effects, even if the acting sucks.formed

I loved it but then again I love all of Denis Villeneuve work ... didn’t see it in a theater but with my sound system and big screen TV it was a fun ride.

    Looking forward to part II

    • I thought the sound/music was so loud in the theater that it was at times hard to hear the dialogue. Did you find that to be the case watching at home?MondoMorphic
    • No not too bad ... I found I had to lower the volume down a couple of times when the couch began to reverberate lol
      but overall no.
      Ramanisky2
    • But I can totally see how in the theater the sound levels can be too much.Ramanisky2
    • Saw it in the theater yesterday. Loved it! I've the read the books many times over and I'm delighted with this cast, the beautiful visuals and score. A+misterhow

I still think the best Dune film was the 1984 version (yes, that everyone hates). When you are trying to image world 10,000 years from now it HAS to be weird and no other films made the world weird enough for me. This new Dune film seems to be made exactly for the year 2021 - it looks dated before even leaving the theaters.

    • I like your thinking.
Really liked the new one, but some of the freakier elements from Lynch's movie have always stuck with me.
      PhanLo
    • God here we go again with this guy. 1984 was a disaster. It was not visionary, it was bad 50ies scifi.tank02
    • Your world is already pretty weird thoughIanbolton
    • I enjoyed both versions of the movie but I think I know what you mean.MondoMorphic

Saw it Friday night, late showing. Pre cinema warm up included 8 cocktails, mdma and about 2foot of reefer.

Absolutely loved it. Visually and aurally magnificent. The sweeping vistas and subtle technology effects like the shields were just right. It felt more personal than Bladerunner, more human.

Javier Bardem ruled every scene he was in. I was disappointed with Zendaya and Jason Mamoa and wanted more of Oscar Isaacs.

However, i cannot recall one single scene from it. And so i'm gonna watch it again this week, less 'adjusted'. :)

    • I reckon it could do with a few re-watches, quite a lot to take in. Good going on being that melted to go see it.PhanLo
    • Thanks. It took it's toll, the task of buying a Coke and some popcorn before hand was a test.... an epic test. We failed. Had to ask a twelve year old...Morning_star

    • lol, minus the kids and the mdma, that's how I watched The Lighthouse in theater. Dozed off for 15 minutes near the middle. I loved it, was beautiful.garbage

Tried to watch it last night but fell asleep, too long... too slow? Maybe just not into this type of shit.

    • Dune should be available on Betamax soon

I heard that it is bombing hard.

Exclusive: Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Movie Is Moving to Late 2021

  • pr21

This trailer is GARBAGE. The film looks like it was made in 2005 and has zero ambition to do what Lynch did (kinda of) or Jodorowsky attempted with their version - portray a world 8000 years away from today.

    • I was expecting this comment from you. Mr AV Club comments come to life.tank02
    • I smella bomb.utopian
    • ofcourse its gonna bomb, in any form its way to smart for the grunts. Infotainment has turned our brains to muschtank02
    • You sound like fun. I bet you get angry because they changed Kynes to a woman.face_melter
    • Jodorowsky's vision was shite in comparison to Herbert's work; this rendition appears way more representative of the original work... as far as a trailer can.zarkonite
    • The "voice guns" in Lynch's movie were an ambarassing substitute for all the fighting, it went against the principles the Butlerian jihad and is poor writing.zarkonite
    • There is SOOOO much failure in Lynch's movie, no wonder he doesn't want his name on it.zarkonite

    • haha, what were they thinking? The movie was impenetrable enough for adults, never mind kids...Nairn

I've never watched Dune and I've been far more interested in watching that documentary about the original than ever watching the movie.

But when I watched the trailer for the first one, and for this one, they both just look dumb. Like it's a convoluted, uninteresting story to latch on to as an adult.

A couple weeks ago a neighbor admitted he'd never seen Star Wars. He mentioned that as an adult it just looks unengaging and cheesy to him. I think that's how I feel about Dune.

    • sorta feel the same but Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors so I am compelled to give this one a go.Ramanisky2
    • It was an influential book, that's why people liked it.
The feudal system as a scifi story. Same way people like Thrones.
      PhanLo
    • Good to know. I think somewhere along the way I also confused Dune with Time Bandits. LOLmg33
    • I never took it seriously as a young kid either, but some of my more cultured pals were really into it.PhanLo
    • I loved Dune as a kid, I was really really looking forward to this movie, until I watched the trailer. It has I was made for Hulu written all over it.utopian
    • Agree on the trailer but can’t see denis fucking it up.ben_
    • Ironic, as Star Wars is a ripoff of Dune.i_monk
    • I was in an “advanced” class in the 5th grade and we read Dune. Hadn’t a clue about a lot of it and felt stupid when the teacher explained what had happened.Green_Pork
    • I can see why they never made the Children of Dune into a movie, it's a bit of a dull end to the characters.
Will that be in this movie series?
      PhanLo
    • Children of Dune was made into a miniseries in the 90s.i_monk
    • Dune, the book, is a true epic and great sci-fi book, following in footsteps of Asimov's Foundation series. It's scale and scope are huge, and at times, boring.monospaced
    • The big picture is awe inspiring, and that's why it's hard to capture them in film. Certain things just don't transfer correctly.monospaced
    • Ha! A true aesthete... The new one looks very straight, as does mg33.tbgoodwillie
    • Watched the mini-series, first 3 edpisodes were good, but the Macavoy ones were quite boring. Maybe the bigger budget and fleshing of the story will helpPhanLo
    • @Mg33 Just watched the documentary today. It's well worth checking. So cool to think of O'Bannon, Moebius, Giger and Foss hanging out together.PhanLo
    • Without the failed Dune, there wouldn't be Alien, at least in the form we see it now. No way as good without Giger.PhanLo
    • Star Wars is super juvenile, but the special effects in the originals are enough to keep you interestednb
  • PhanLo2

Moebius concepts for the failed Jodorowsky project. Been watching the Children of Dune show, looks like some of the outfits are quite similar.
Looking forward to the new movie too.
    -

    • I love Moebius' work, but the style and costumes are way off from the world established in the book. Probably done under Jodorowski's misguided direction...zarkonite
    • They're pretty outlandish for sure. Do you think the new movie is closer to the book visually?PhanLo
    • Hard to say, the casting is bang on in my mind. The headboard on Paul's bed in the trailer is exactly as described in the book... but he didn't go as far aszarkonite
    • making the sky on Dune black (due to lack of moisture, there is no blue). But I trust his vision, he's done really well so far.zarkonite
    • Hope it works out.PhanLo
  • i_monk1

I wish people would stop wanking to the ghost of Jodorowsky's Dune.

    He never read the book.

He didn't know how it ended, and changed the ending.

And he was an admitted rapist.

    • I wish people would stop wanking to the Dune 2020 trailer.utopian

Am I the only one who feels like this is a bit underwhelming?

It's good, and I'll watch it, but it doesn't raise the hairs in my neck. Maybe that's not what they were shooting for, trying not to get sucked into the trap of high expectations?

    • It looks like it might stand the test of time, which imho is a better target than your neck hairsnb

"Villeneuve, a devotee of Herbert’s book from when he was a young teenager, knew immediately that in order for a feature film adaptation to be successful, “Dune” could not just be one movie.

“The story is so rich and complex that, in order to be faithful to the book, we’ll need to make at least two movies,” he said. “That was a deal right at the start.”"
