Finally saw part 2, and it was absolutely amazing. This the kind of film I go out of my way to see on the big big screen, and I’m so glad I did. The sound design makes it visceral, and the already intense action scenes have such impact you really feel it. It’s hard for me to get through some of these scenes and even comprehend how someone could label it boring. It is an epic like I’ve not seen before, and the build up for the next (final?) installment was hear pounding. Wow.

    • This was the vision this film deserves. It really brought to life one of the finest sci fi stories of all time and did it justice.monospaced
    • I can’t wait to see it.Ramanisky2
    • Not boring...just a piss poor script and story. I agree that the cinematography and sound design were both stunning. Some of the acting was also pretty lame.utopian
    • I was hoping they would get more into the sci-fi aspect of it. The effects of spice, their relationship with it, bending space/travel, spice guild. None of thattoemaas

Saw it yesterday on the big screen (it's only just opened here in prison). Definitely one for the cinema not the sofa. It looks spectacular. One of the best bits of world-building in ages and mum steals the show. Loved it.

And only for those familiar with '80s UK TV...

Hard to believe but my mate's wife was completely unfamiliar with the entire thing, new film, old film, book - everything. For quite a while we had her convinced we were off to see the light-hearted origin story of June, part two will be Terry's.

It's good, and I'll watch it, but it doesn't raise the hairs in my neck. Maybe that's not what they were shooting for, trying not to get sucked into the trap of high expectations?

    • I'll just go full spoilers and save you from reading the canon books: Paul as Muad'Dib is a false messiah, being manipulated by a cult of witches.garbage
    • He was actually supposed to be born a girl, so that the could be bred to the Harkonnens, but Jessica willed him to be a boy.garbage
    • So the witches used him to form a cult, and in the middle of it all he let himself get killed, which is pretty Christlike.garbage
    • But he's more of a pawn, more of a mistake than a messiah.garbage
    • fooking prawns.Nairn
    • ^ lol, when are we getting District 10? Answer: never.garbage
    • I did read the book. A couple of tile. He was also prophesied and fulfilled it regardless of being a pawn.monospaced
    • Maybe read it another tile. He was foisted as a false prophet, and they pushed him as far as he could go. He was literally a false messiah, hence the title.garbage
    • A messiah saves people. Paul was responsible for galactic jihad and the deaths of billions at the behest of the Bene Gesserit.garbage
    • I think they will probably gloss over that. In the trailer Chani calls him "Paul Atreides", and not "Usul".garbage
    • But Paul was 100% a pawn.garbage

on Morning_star's advice i went back for another look (it's cheap on mondays, see). having had my expectations dashed on the first showing i wasn't expecting a loth and i have to say it was much better as a result.

there are still a couple of sections that need cutting out, and christopher walken still phones it in as emperor, but otherwise i enjoyed it much more than when i first saw it. fabulous visuals, fabulous sound and for some reason the plot stumbled along a lot better than on the first showing.

    so thank you Morning_star!

    • You're very welcome. A second viewing is definitely the key.Morning_star
    • Walken and Pugh were disappointing. An empire of excesses, they should have raised the bar in some way.i_monk
    • To hear that Pugh was disappointing hurts a bit. Normally, she's a first-rate scene stealer.Continuity
    • Definitely think walken is the weakest part of it. They needed some one with more menace/gravitas.thumb_screws
    • +1 Pugh and Walken didn't belong in this onegrafician

I've never watched Dune and I've been far more interested in watching that documentary about the original than ever watching the movie.

But when I watched the trailer for the first one, and for this one, they both just look dumb. Like it's a convoluted, uninteresting story to latch on to as an adult.

A couple weeks ago a neighbor admitted he'd never seen Star Wars. He mentioned that as an adult it just looks unengaging and cheesy to him. I think that's how I feel about Dune.

    • sorta feel the same but Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors so I am compelled to give this one a go.Ramanisky2
    • It was an influential book, that's why people liked it.
The feudal system as a scifi story. Same way people like Thrones.
      PhanLo
    • Good to know. I think somewhere along the way I also confused Dune with Time Bandits. LOLmg33
    • I never took it seriously as a young kid either, but some of my more cultured pals were really into it.PhanLo
    • I loved Dune as a kid, I was really really looking forward to this movie, until I watched the trailer. It has I was made for Hulu written all over it.utopian
    • Agree on the trailer but can’t see denis fucking it up.ben_
    • Ironic, as Star Wars is a ripoff of Dune.i_monk
    • I was in an “advanced” class in the 5th grade and we read Dune. Hadn’t a clue about a lot of it and felt stupid when the teacher explained what had happened.Green_Pork
    • I can see why they never made the Children of Dune into a movie, it's a bit of a dull end to the characters.
Will that be in this movie series?
      PhanLo
    • Children of Dune was made into a miniseries in the 90s.i_monk
    • Dune, the book, is a true epic and great sci-fi book, following in footsteps of Asimov's Foundation series. It's scale and scope are huge, and at times, boring.monospaced
    • The big picture is awe inspiring, and that's why it's hard to capture them in film. Certain things just don't transfer correctly.monospaced
    • Ha! A true aesthete... The new one looks very straight, as does mg33.tbgoodwillie
    • Watched the mini-series, first 3 edpisodes were good, but the Macavoy ones were quite boring. Maybe the bigger budget and fleshing of the story will helpPhanLo
    • @Mg33 Just watched the documentary today. It's well worth checking. So cool to think of O'Bannon, Moebius, Giger and Foss hanging out together.PhanLo
    • Without the failed Dune, there wouldn't be Alien, at least in the form we see it now. No way as good without Giger.PhanLo
    • Star Wars is super juvenile, but the special effects in the originals are enough to keep you interestednb

Saw it Friday night, late showing. Pre cinema warm up included 8 cocktails, mdma and about 2foot of reefer.

Absolutely loved it. Visually and aurally magnificent. The sweeping vistas and subtle technology effects like the shields were just right. It felt more personal than Bladerunner, more human.

Javier Bardem ruled every scene he was in. I was disappointed with Zendaya and Jason Mamoa and wanted more of Oscar Isaacs.

However, i cannot recall one single scene from it. And so i'm gonna watch it again this week, less 'adjusted'. :)

    • I reckon it could do with a few re-watches, quite a lot to take in. Good going on being that melted to go see it.PhanLo

Just got back from watching part 2.

It looks and sounds incredible and gets weird. It does change some things up from the source that I thought were intrinsic to character motives. I'm not sure they worked.

Geidi Prime looks incredible, feels like they have taken some influence from Geigers old concept art and incorporate brutalist elements.

    We're totally getting Messiah.
