Saw it yesterday on the big screen (it's only just opened here in prison). Definitely one for the cinema not the sofa. It looks spectacular. One of the best bits of world-building in ages and mum steals the show. Loved it.
And only for those familiar with '80s UK TV...
Hard to believe but my mate's wife was completely unfamiliar with the entire thing, new film, old film, book - everything. For quite a while we had her convinced we were off to see the light-hearted origin story of June, part two will be Terry's.
- Lol. I'd watch Terry in Dune.Fax_Benson
- lol_me_
- Caught it yesterday too. Im fresh from a re read and they have done a cracking a job of translating to screen.thumb_screws

- It's an alright movie. Looks very nice, and ends in such a retarded way.babydick

Just saw it in the theater. Loved it. It by far exceeded my expectations.

just realized a line in fatboy slim's weapon of choice was referencing dune....
"Walk without rhythm
And it won't attract the worm"am i the only one who just figured this out?
- Yes.i_monk
- it is never too late to pay attention
to the lyrics. also sings of getting old :Dsted - well i've never read the book or finished the other dune movie...
so when i was at that part of the movie i just went OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.pango - Pink Floyd always referenced worms...not that uncommon when you think about itformed
- never thought about it lolpango

went along to do my duty, not expecting much
was totally blown away, loved every second of it.
would have sat thru another 2.5 hrs of pt2 there and then.
no big fan of the book (tho i have read it) but it seemed in keeping asfar as i can remember (not much)
the real problem is that there's so much stuff that needs explaining that it's hard to find an intuitive way of doing it.
lynch used internal dialogue, villeneuve has the characters explain it to each other in a clunky way. not too sure what the answer is.

- The people of the cities and towns stain their eyes to fight the sun, unlike the Fremen who get blue eyes from all the spice in their environment.zarkonite
- all this sci fi stuff just seems like some muslim fantasy art through the eyes of a western artistRaybandana
- Have you ..er.. read Dune, Raybandana?Nairn
- even if he did not, that' slightly narrow-minded conclusion hehh.sted
- Oil = spicehotroddy
- Its a great story!Raybandana
- The Fremen are Zensunni, descendants of Buddhists and Sunni Muslims thousands of years and planets removed.garbage
- These are the rich folk of Arrakeen, so an KSA comparison tracks.garbage

Nerd rant response to Timothèe Chalamet criticism:
I think he fucking nailed it, and this is his demeanor in the books. The Bene Gesserit were running a concubine gambit, with the endgame being Jessica having a girl that the Bene Gesserit were to have married into House Harkonnen, unify the houses and then produce a Kwisatz Hadarach.
Problem is, Jessica fell in love with the Duke, which led her to having a boy and plans changed. They began raising him as a mentat, and the confused pawn in their game was a late bloomer.

- wasn't a bad performance I just wasn't feeling it... his scenes with brolin/gurney were spot on... didn't really feel the mamoa/duncan bond like in the booksjonny_quest_lives
- Yeah, I agree on that more time should have been spent on Duncan, but there's another [cough cough] GLARING OMISSION that bugs me. Still was a fun watch for me.garbage
- I'm an absolute sucker for DV's eye/palette. Any release is an instant buy and a fat joint.garbage
- it's strange how familiar the pacing of the Atreides betrayal on Arrakis felt so similar to the Lynch movie which I think was a bit off putting for mejonny_quest_lives
- the best bits were the Villenueve touches and truly distinct performances rendered by Brolin, Bardem and Skarsgård... i want more of that in the next iterationjonny_quest_lives
- anytime the Bene Gesserit were in a scene I felt Villenueve was channeling the books perfectly... the scene on Giedi Prime in particular stood outjonny_quest_lives
- /nerdjonny_quest_lives
- Yeah I wish it spent more time on Giedi Prime. He's keeping the Harkonnens in the shadows and hopefully we get a [cough cough] appearance in the second.garbage

All in all solid movie... Timothèe Chalamet was eye candy but I really wasn't really feeling his performance. Villenueve probably could have cut 5 or 6 of those Zendaya over the shoulder shots out. Javier Bardem's Stilgar was a standout performance much of the supporting cast's performances were very good.
- Villenueve's world building was more interesting than most of the performances in it. Any time Fremen related lore or action was occurring I was hooked.jonny_quest_lives

- I hate Tim Poop, but the movie is a slow burn. Still, I would never walk out halfway through, so fuck his cuck beanie faggot facebabydick

- I've read the books, my wife hasn't, I had to keep pausing the movie to explain things. That story can not be told any faster, sorry Tim.mathinc
- lol same. I turned the subtitles on, and she still thought Shai Hulud was another one of Paul's names.garbage
- I like the first Dune, is this slower? I don't remember to find the first slow, was long time ago I was almost a kid. but I liked the moviei_was
- @garbage You don't need to read a book before watching the movie of iti_was
- Agree and disagree. Herbert did some very intricate world-building in the first one. You're going to miss a lot of things because DV chose not to include..garbage
- ..the internal dialogues that Lynch did. If you've seen the first one, you probably won't need the exposition. But also, read Dune! It's pretty amazing.garbage
- It's a good slow burn of a film, but there's a ton to appreciate if you know what you're seeing. I have two major qualms, but I'll keep quiet about it for now.garbage
- I read it! when I was a kid, I couldn't get my eyes out of the book! read all Dune in a row. Fascinating to remember this.i_was
