I just saw it. It may be worse than Phantom Menace. It was forgettable. The robot was very good but I didn’t like (or dislike) anyone else. The story was unambitious and the plot was very thin. They treated this like a Saturday morning cartoon. If you’re going to make a cliffhanger out of the last movie and make the next one a completely different story, it should be great.
- Also, no heavy discussion of the force at all. It just didn't have that profound feeling all the others have. It's just subpar on so many levels.CyBrainX

- hmmmmmBabySnakes
- nonsense.fadein11
- it was purposely not made about the Force - they tried something different and succeeded.fadein11
- sorry - the plot was a million times better than force awakens which was basically a reboot.fadein11
- It's a side story. It's not an official episode.monospaced
- ^ Agreed. They lowered the bar drastically and all the fans seem OK with it. I just don't know why.CyBrainX
- because The Force Awakens was shit and this is much better.fadein11
- Can agree at all. The Force Awakens had things and people I'll remember. I wont miss any of these people in Rogue 1.CyBrainX
- "all fans seem okay with it" = successful SW movie.fadein11
- I though it was great. If anything, they spoke a bit too much about the force because in that time period the force was though of as superstition.IRNlun6
- For me it's the best movie since the original trilogy.IRNlun6
- yep.fadein11
- "all fans seem okay with it" = successful SW movie.
That kind of thinking gets you reality shows and top 40 music.CyBrainX - You are insane.ArmandoEstrada
- Worse than Phantom Menace? With all that jar jar shit and a 3 hour race scene? See above.dopepope
- No, the new movie wasn't nearly as offensive as all that crap but it at least had a great fight scene, Yoda, Great characters and many memorable scenes.CyBrainX
- lol - the only person on Planet Earth who thought Phantom Menace had memorable scenes.fadein11

I'm going to take my daugther and 3 friends to watch it this eve, they've rewatched all the saga before, like past december, when they watched the last episode... Basque nerdy girls < nice band name :))

- no spoilers pls.fadein11
- Trying not to share spoilers, but if you're this thread you're committing spoiler suicide.CyBrainX
- <That cg was as good as they can get it. But it's not quite there yet. Still pretty amazing to see.dopepope
- This image is cg??? Damn. Wow. Incredible.monospaced

*spoilers*
CGI Tarkin was a bit distracting, but all the other cameos were great. So many awesome little tidbits throughout to set the table for A New Hope and Vader's closing scene was so badass.
This movie was awesome. I liked it better than Ep7.
- CygnusZero4-2
Just got back. I think I liked Force Awakens more, it was a bit more refined than this movie, but I need to see R1 again. It was good. Great at times, but had some flaws.
*SPOLIERS*
CGI Tarkin and Leia shouldnt have been done. It was too noticeable and sucked me right out of the movie. Felt like I was watching a cartoon. The first 45 mins felt very disjointed. The 2 Vader scenes were excellent.
- I agree with all of this but was impressed with Tarkin.CyBrainX
- The final Vader scene had my inner 8-yr-old grinning with wide-eyed delight, super badassprophetone
- They could have reduced Tarkin and had more Vader. Would have worked better.ETM
- And were the first act problems related to the reshoots, I wonder?ETM
- I hadn't read anything about the production before watching the film so didn't pay close attention to the cgi rendered faces, so for me it worked.Bullitt
- Unlike Jeff bridges in tron2 which looked like someone wearing a rubber maskBullitt
- It is the eyes though, they need to study them more, it's missing the constant movement maybe that's almost unnoticeable... maybe it's missing the soulBullitt
- Yeah they needed a cgi James brown to make it work lolBullitt
- ^ they used a real actor and cgi'd on top - the eyes were the real actors for that exact reason.fadein11

A very elegant and refined Star Wars film. Loved it. Yes it stalls a bit towards the second act but it was fine.
- since19797
The Star Wars franchise is in very capable hands.
- CygnusZero4-3
When they first showed Tarkin's reflection, they should have left it at that. He was in so many scenes for far too long, thats what allowed us to pick out the flaws in the CG. Hell, he could have even just been a hologram and it would have been fine, but they chose to put him all out there. Really strange decision.
And Leia was even worse. Looked like some shit from the clone wars show. Eyebrows all crazy looking. Did anyone here see that recent final fantasy movie kingsglaive? This guy was all cgi and was super fucking convincing as a real human. Couldnt tell it wasnt cgi sometimes, and I seriously doubt this had the budget SW had, and it was TWO HOURS OF THIS.
Overall R1 was good. First hour felt rushed, patched together, very little character development. Some really dumb looking aliens at times that Force Awakens didnt have. What was that octopus thing?? I did a major eyeroll when I saw that. But for a spinoff movie made by some nobody that did that meh godzilla movie, it wasnt bad.
- They REALLY got the eyes right on this guy. Didnt look fake like Tarkin and Leia.CygnusZero4
- Cygnus hates on this, post #2/19monospaced
- Like I said before, Vader could have sat in instead of Tarkin for some of the scenes. And Tarkin as a hologram would have been a good idea too.ETM
- the r'ship between Tarkin and Krennic was pretty key to the story. You are nitpicking - it was superb CGI, breathtaking at times.fadein11
- my better half thought carrie fisher was some deleted scene from back in the day, i thought it was obviously cgi, i guess it depends on how familiar you are witterry_cloth
- -h what cgi looks like nowadays. personally, i thought tarkin and leah were kind of hard to watch but as the technology gets better i'm sure they will retroactiterry_cloth
- -vely update it like they did to the original trilogy over and over againterry_cloth
- CygnusZero4-3
Way better human cgi than rogue one.
- GeorgesII2
I wanted to hate it so much,
but it was really good,
godammit finally seeing Vader fuck shit up was so enjoyable

i'm about to go see it for a second time,
mild SPOILERS:
my favorite character is lawrence fishburn's cybernetic lieutenant, great character design, that dude rocks. my only complaints are that the frenchman was about the only dynamic character in the whole film which was a bit disappointing, and that i walked out of the movie theatre feeling like i had just watched saving private ryan, i understand that for congruencies sake people had to get knocked off but that went a little far.
also, where were the damned bothans?
- I feel this has been covered, the Bothans were involved in the second death star plans, not the first. They were mentioned in Jedi, not A New Hope.ETM
- Ah right, in the events of shadows of the empireterry_cloth
- *spoiler belowterry_cloth
- So the destruction from orbit of the imperial technology is a good way to explain why the crazy tech from 1 2 and 3 wouldn't show up in the original trilogyterry_cloth
- Forest Whitaker?teh
- yea, morpheusterry_cloth
- That was not Lawrence Fishbone. You're thinking of Yaphet Kotto.dopepope
- oh you're right, he was wicked good in the lethal weapon moviesterry_cloth

Why no Jedi?
- SPOILER ____________________... vader is in it using force choking and lopping off limbsterry_cloth
- Perhaps the whole thing that Vader and the Emperor hunted down and exterminated them all.ETM
- Something of a core concept :)ETM
- Weird. Thought their would be at least one.teh
- Too busy at Tosche Station picking up some power converters ...ETM
- someone clearly didnt see revenge of the sithCygnusZero4
- I just think rogue 1 was thee worst.teh

do many bothans die?
- Bluejam1
really enjoyed it, def in the top three best Star Wars films.
added a lot to New Hope and kinda made that a better film.SPOILER ALERT
My only gripe (a plot hole)...
... considering we saw a shot of 'golden rod & Artoo' on Yavin 4 as the fleet was about to leave, how the fuck did they get onto the Tantive 5 in time ... they could have appeared earlier in the film rather than 2 second clip towards the end.
Interesting that a lot of the footage in the trailers wasnt actually in the film ... notably Jyn v tie fighter and rebels leaving bunker v At-ATs ... was that by accident (reshoots) or design?
- I think it was down to the major rewrites/shoots. Was amazed that great Tie shot didn't make the final cut though.fadein11
- intrigued to know now what the film was before the reshootsBluejam
- her vs tie was actually never supposed to be in the movie. it was just test footage that was used for the trailers.CygnusZero4
- odd. test footage for trailers - thats a new one to me.fadein11

Diego Luna did not belong in this film, and his particular spanish accent most certainly did not belong in this film. Weird casting decision.
C3PO looked alot more like a skeleton than a robot. But aside from the look, I liked the character. Weird wardrobe decision.
They need to invent a new term for when a deceased person appears in a film through CGI. Also, some discussion of ethics is in order.
- cherub0
Overall, I liked it alright, but it didn't resemble as much in 'feel' as I thought it would to a star wars movie, and the 2nd half was definitely better than the 1st half. Rotten tomatoes gives it 84% and I'd say that's about right.
- scarabin5
we should make new movie threads nsfw so they don't show up on the front page
