    Saw it last night.
It's a good addition to the series.
Story wise it's braver than Force Awakens and yeah, there are some similiar plot points to Empire.
Yes, it has it's flaws - some minor and a couple that are major.
IMO, one of the major flaws involves both Force Awakens and Last Jedi - and it needs an answer. That last scene ... not sure what to think about that.

What I would say is whoever edited/directed the trailers and promos did a fucking good job ... especially when you hear/see the stuff in the film ...

    • and there was one CGI character that was, imo, disappointing ... no excuses not to get that rightBluejam
    • I wondered if the odd color was to make him look like he did in Empire and Return of the Jedi or maybe that's what you look like in "that condition".CyBrainX
    • Either way, it was a high point just to see him at all.CyBrainX
    • trueBluejam
    • that was my favourite part, him back and analogue...with a fist up his ass lol_niko
    • He's the best character in the entire franchise if not any franchise.CyBrainX

A lot to soak in. I really liked it... I think... Though this is Star Wars... so expectations are high.

There are some incredible moments and imagery here. People in the cinema were gasping an certain moments. But there's some really odd and bad shit in there.

    SPOILER TIME
    SPOILER TIME

okay nerding out here but my major gripe....

Luke's ending. Incredibly made. Though did they really need to kill him off? Because he's old? I want to see a trilogy with old man Luke. Or at least more screen time with the guy. Arguably one of the greats in american cinema, with decades of fans waiting for his return.... and we get ONE film with Luke Skywalker.... One film amongst an incoming wave of countless other Star Wars movies.

What a fucking waste. It seems almost moronic to me. There's now no Han, no Leia (sadly), no Luke. What kind of fuck up hole have Disney dug themselves into...

It's disappointing, as I thought Rian Johnson would understand that. A grizzled down-and-out samurai as the hero makes for a fucking awesome work of cinema. Those old Kurosawa era classics were rarely about a bunch of twenty somethings. There was so much potential here to keep Luke around as a key role...

    • Don't forget, Luke got most of his training from a ghosted Obi Wan Kenobi. Expect to see him and Yoda again.CyBrainX
    • but he had some trailing. Rai cut an ancient rock in half with no training.mugwart
    • True he'll be back, but as a cameo. The more I think about it the more it bugs me. That classic trilogy with those characters you loved? That's it. The end.inteliboy
    • I completely agree. I wanted an entire trilogy of Master Jedi Skywalker badassery.
We got 2-3 minutes of it. Awesome movie otherwise.

    • I'm putting money on more than a cameo from Luke in the next movie.CyBrainX

.... Watched it. There is nothing better in the world in when a new edition to a film series that meant so much to you as a child and you get the chance to take your own kid whom is now a fan. Music started then the logo came up. Son hugged - it was a treasured moment...

That said TERRIBLE WRITING/ Directing, great film-making but fucking hell you could hear the Disney committee board members tear at what was an interesting idea.
I enjoyed the long length but fucking hell it was repetitive with the last minute saves.

So many major grips but main one was how they handled the political correctness. Should samurai's/ Jedi's be all white ... no, should they be of the universe (black, asian, female, of alien origin) fuck yeah of cause. Do I care, only with the quality of character arc. They were too busy ticking committee PC boxes that some characters whom happened to be were left lifeless.
Why cant they just be well written and why only the good side but all the baddies just White or Japanese. Come one.
The way the men were portrayed rolled my eyes. I don't see this in real life so why is it so hyped up on the screen?

Why are Rai and Kylo Ren so powerful compared to Luke and Darth?

Laura Dern - fuck yeah. Obvious death/ character arc but fuck yeah. A character that should have been left alive. Why couldnt a droid stay back?

I nearly cried when Disney wrote out my childhood hero in savior of that weak limp character Rai. Why ... the only reason I could think of was she was all powerful "female" (marked as PC not any feelings I have against females) she didn't need training cause she had a dream once ... cause those light sabers are so easy to wield ... Luke had depth, history and a life left to live. I really feel cheated.

Disney makes one off book ended films that for some reason are loved. Star Wars was a set of films that actually meant a damn to people. They have a life.

Luke was fucking bad arse and still needed.

The writing mirroring Empire was so obvious they even mocked it "...Salt" "they really hate that ship".

Chewee becoming vegan was funny -- those cute dodo's were not needed. Nor was ice bambi - fuck off Disney selling push toys.

I also found this instantly hypercritical, that evil arms dealer city looked incredibly like Cannes and the people stereotypical film makers. Cameo from Theroux made me think directly of Hollywood (his role in Mulholland Drive). But the rebels were fighting for the kiddies, to stop these evil slave drivers exploiting the kids... the same as Disney's sweat shops... left me dirty.

Smok was a joke, "I can read his mind". Jedi's can sense killing intent.

Star Wars was practically stolen from the greatest film maker of all time. The world benefited from it million fold. I didn't see film makers telling stories any more, I just see committees selling products and hypocrisy.

I sound so cynical. Where is the love of story telling? Making people laugh honestly not over sarcasm. Touching people's hearts with love, romance and above all humanity. Giving people a sense of wonder. This is a cooperate commitee making films. We are stuck with this director/writer for another 3 films. Can't we have Gareth Edwards?

Turned into a rant! VFX was great though ;-)

    • fuck that was a long rant! I'm a rather passionate fella!mugwart
    • You think Rey is a weak / limp character? Wow. Also, remember it still IS a kid's movie, so our adult grudges may just be out of timecolin_s
    • Curious about your criticisms of Johnson though; I thought his direction was spot on, if the writing was just a bit off / joke heavy at timescolin_s
    • The film had no voice. It felt more of a commitee around a war room arguing about toy sales.
There was no director. Rogue one had a director, it had a voice.
      mugwart
    • He directed the camera better than JJ. Acting was better than JJ. Jokes were off and not needed so much. It was more the events.mugwart
    • The fact it is a kids movie actually made me cry. There is no voice for children these days just sales. I found myself numb and very sad. I took my family tomugwart
    • the comic shop afterwards and felt the same there. Story telling is so pure and so essential to the human spirit. Comedy is about bullying different opinions.mugwart
    • Romance is "weird" (yes I know its complex issues).
This ... this was a let down. Why did Luke do this? Han solo suprise saves were him turning a cheek
      mugwart
    • everythign here was stringing together scenes the commitees wanted.mugwart
    • Dont get me wrong I wanted Rai to be great. I wanted her arch to be fucking kick arse. She should be raw, she should be angry, she should be confused.mugwart
    • She's like the DareDevil - she should be the bad guy but something is holding on to her. Something that was never taught to her -- humanitymugwart
    • Its an amazing story arch. Its why she could be so raw. Shes a contract to Kylo.
But nothing was explored other than a finger touch. Which should have meant a
      mugwart
    • great dealmugwart
    • sadly I think you're taking stabs at the movie from a cynical eye. word is Rian Johnson had barely any input from the Disney fat cats. This is HIS film.inteliboy
    • I think the secondary characters - rose, finn, poe - are the ones vocalizing 'for the kids', very obvious in their choice of settings (rich vs poor)colin_s
    • Also the theme of the movie was "kill the past" so it was very much a warning, "this will not be what you expect" etc. - a re-tooling of the expectedcolin_s
    • kill the past but it remains the same.
I hope it wasn't just his film... I would be more sad as there was no voice at all.

So now that we can be on the spoiler page:

    1. This movie was so gorgeous and that shot of Snoke's ship getting cut in half was one of the best visuals Star Wars has ever seen. Holy fuck.

    2. Also the lightsaber battle in the Throne Room. Yowza.

    3. My major gripe was Leia's "Skywalking." I do like this idea:

    https://www.theringer.com/2017/1…

... that Johnson was elevating the mystery behind the Force, away from the BS prequel explanation and back to the exciting 'what the hell is this power.' But having Leia survive both an explosion and a space vacuum, without being trained as a Jedi, leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

    4. I love the porgs, fuck you, don't at me.

    5. That scene of Luke elevated on the island brought my theater to cheers. It was a gun in the first act when Kylo told Rey, "This (force projecting) would kill you," so I'm OK with Luke going out that way. But as he was dying he looked at one of the suns and there was a black spec in front of it - that could not have been a mistake - and I wonder what it was.

    6. IMO it would have been much more powerful for Leia to die in the kamikaze maneuver and Finn to die charging at the ground cannon ... I get that they both were being set up for big roles in IX but Luke's death seems oddly detached - it would primarily affect my (older) generation, as opposed to the kids who might have started with TFA.

    7. Really though this kicked ass and I need to see it again on the biggest and loudest screen possible.

    • 1 - the ships in half was WOW.
2 - didnt like majority of it. Staging was off.
3 - leia was terrible. She should have been the one to grive the ship through
      mugwart
    • her story was leading up to the sick of the suffering it was causingmugwart
    • so I agree very much with 6mugwart
    • I also bet Luke will be around for IX, still has to finish teaching Rey (only 2 of 3 lessons were taught). Also like you said $$colin_s
    • Don't forget, Obi Wan did most of his training after he "died" in New Hope.CyBrainX
    • It's interesting how the Jedi become zombies.CyBrainX
  • CygnusZero4-8

Man that fucking sucked lmao. It was indescribably bad. The corny humor, farrrrrr more than any other star wars movie, the horrible script, really corny lines. I swear to god at one point I really thought kylo was going to say "I know you are by what am I?"

Rian Johnson is absolute trash. The editing was atrocious constantly cutting back and forth. That casino place looked like some stupid disney or harry potter shit. So, so bad. I mean this was worse than all of the prequels. Felt like a mess after the very tightly structured force awakens. That movie was way better than this pile of pointless horribly written shit.

    • the humour was def. off, they were going for a guardians of the galaxy vibe but that isn't star wars._niko
    • Well, no one thought you would like it any way. So no surprise at all.ETM
    • Spot on truth.Hayoth
    • The slapstick humor was my least favorite aspect of the movie.CyBrainX
    • ETM, except I liked force awakens. This movie was trash. No way to get around that. It wasnt a SW movie.CygnusZero4
    • Grumpy Smurf doesn’t like something. Again. Shocking. Lol.dopepope
    • "this was worse than all of the prequels" /credibilitye-wo
    • I find it hard reconciling what cygnus writes in the political threads with anything else he upchucks on QBN. It's like two wholly different people.detritus
  • _niko-1

my other favourite part about this film: no fucking space senates, trade route treaties and fucking Midichloria.
    just clean innocent magical fun.

  • CygnusZero4-11

No light saber fights in this movie lmao. And Hack Johnson took liberties to completely change the force. It was so stupid.

  • inteliboy-2

    "kill the past"

I get the reasoning why they felt this was a theme they needed to inject into Star Wars - to expand and freshen up the universe.... something the fans have been complaining about since the Force Awakens....

Well now they got their wish. And here we are. Now any kid with a broom can be a Jedi! And all you're favourite characters? Dead. All mystery? Dead. The Skywalker Saga? Dead... well I don't see it going beyond 1 more film to end the story on the last living Skywalker bloodline.

What a mess. Why on earth did they think this was a good idea? In a decade or two... they'll be thinking "Fuck, we really shouldn't have killed off all the skywalkers"

That said I still kinda loved the film.

    • Are you blaming them for killing Carrie Fisher?CyBrainX
    • luke. but I dunno, just ranting.inteliboy
    • I agree. I enjoyed the movie but hated about 90% of their decisions involving Luke. He needed to live.MondoMorphic

Watched it with the kiddo today. Lots of story to work through. Overall, I liked it. However...

Leia should have died while floating in space – better for drama. Just a disregard for blood boiling in space...and then the space soaring. fuck me.

Yoda was thankfully a puppet, but performance seemed kinda flat. Still better in ESB.

Luke looked pretty healthy to me. Yoda was like 900 years old, so get ur shit together luke. damn.

How was Fin undetected when running to help Rose after trying to destroy the cannon? Did no one see him? Not a fucking shot.

The code breaker story was unnecessary.

I enjoyed it though. It's not like I could make a star wars movie.

  • RumperChunk-5

    People.

It was a two and a half hour episode of Battlestar Galactica.

    • Yeah sure, maybe the worst episode of BG ever made. This movie is way worse than anything I ever saw on that show.CygnusZero4
    • That's not much of an insult. The only Battlestar Galactica I didn't like was the airing of grievances through boxing episode.CyBrainX

I saw this again on a larger, louder screen and it was even better the second time. A summer blockbuster in winter.

The deaths should have been Finn and Leia, not Holder and Luke. My only real complaint.

    • Agreed. Finn was robbed of his most meaningful moment. And it shoulda been Leia in Holdo's seat.e-wo

i went for the visuals, was blown away by the sound design impressed with the visuals.

Great thrill ride. Johnson pulled it off.

    Spoilers:
Loved that Boba Fett is back, I always knew he would survive the sarlacc creature from Jedi
The Leia lightsaber battle was okay, Fisher looked slow with the moves but it worked well enough
Luke turning to the dark side was totally predictable but sets up the next chapter.
JarJar/Smoke situation seems kinda forced but whatever. We will wait til the final chapter
    Finn dies.

    • Wait, is the JarJar thing real? IDGAF about a fucking Star War, and won't be watching this movie. But if JarJar is back, I'm tuning in.garbage
